∆ 42 on the ambulance license plate.
∆ Stretcher forms monolith.
NOTE:
A reader asks, “What is the significance of 42?”
The number 42 will be no stranger to students of Kubrick, The Shining, and the phenomenon known as ‘synchromysticism’, but to the novice I will say 42 is 24 reversed, and therefore suggests the 24-hour day, or time itself reversed. 4 is 2 doubled, and 2 is itself the double, so 42 suggests the fall, or a cutting in half – a reduction, or even death. 42 is also a number next to a number half its size, which suggests the relationship between adult and child.
The scene in Lolita above is not one of sorrow for HH, as Mrs. Haze’s death frees him to close in on his sexual relationship with his step-child, and the sinister meanings of 42 are revealed.
