Marion Bartoli (French: [maʁjɔ̃ baʁtɔli]; born 2 October 1984) is a French former professional tennis player. She won the 2013 Wimbledon Championships singles title after previously being runner-up in 2007, and was a semifinalist at the 2011 French Open. She also won eight Women's Tennis Association singles titles and three doubles titles. She announced her immediate retirement from professional tennis on 14 August 2013.
Bartoli defeated three reigning world no. 1 players in her career: Justine Henin in the semifinal of the 2007 Wimbledon Championships, Jelena Janković in the fourth round of the 2009 Australian Open, and Victoria Azarenka in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Sony Ericsson Open. She also recorded wins over other top players such as Venus and Serena Williams, Ana Ivanovic, Lindsay Davenport, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, Dinara Safina, Caroline Wozniacki, Petra Kvitová, Samantha Stosur, and Kim Clijsters.
She was known for her unorthodox style of play using two hands on both her forehand and backhand. On 30 January 2012 she reached a career high ranking of no. 7 in the world; she returned to this ranking on 8 July 2013 after triumphing at Wimbledon. Bartoli reached at least the quarter-final stage at each of the four Grand Slams. Her win at Wimbledon made her only the sixth player in the open era to win the Championships without dropping a single set. She is also the only player ever to have played at both the WTA Tour Championships and the WTA Tournament of Champions in the same year, in 2011.

Sabine Katharina Lisicki (German pronunciation: [zaˈbɪnə lɪˈzɪki]; born 22 September 1989) is a German professional tennis player who is currently ranked world no. 30 by the WTA. She turned professional in 2006 and her breakthrough came in 2009 when she reached the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon Championships and won her first WTA title, the Family Circle Cup, against Caroline Wozniacki. In March 2010, she suffered an ankle injury at the Indian Wells Masters that kept her out of competition for five months and saw her fall out of the top 200.
Lisicki rebounded in 2011 and won the Aegon Classic before entering the Wimbledon Championships as a wildcard and going on to reach the semifinals, where she lost to Maria Sharapova. In doing so she became only the second woman in Wimbledon history to make it to the semifinals while entering the tournament as a wildcard. She followed that two months later by winning her third WTA tournament, the Texas Open. In 2012, she achieved her highest career world ranking, 12th, and again reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. Again, in 2012 she suffered from another ankle injury that prevented her from having better results on tour. Lisicki reached the final of the 2013 Wimbledon Championships, losing to Marion Bartoli. The following year, she reached another quarterfinal at the 2014 Wimbledon Championships and won her first title in 3 years when she won the 2014 Hong Kong Tennis Open.

The 2013 Wimbledon Championships was a tennis tournament played on outdoor grass courts. It was the 127th edition of the Wimbledon Championships and the third Grand Slam event of the year. It took place at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, and ran from 24 June to 7 July. It consisted of events for professional players in singles, doubles and mixed doubles play. Junior and wheelchair players also took part in singles and doubles events as well as retired players in invitation doubles.
Roger Federer and Serena Williams were the defending champions in singles events, but neither was able to repeat their success. Federer was eliminated in the second round by Sergiy Stakhovsky and Williams lost in the fourth round to Sabine Lisicki. This marked the first time since 1927 in which both defending champions were eliminated before the quarter-finals. Federer and Williams were two of a number of big-name casualties in the early rounds, along with two-time champion Rafael Nadal, two-time semi-finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 2004 champion Maria Sharapova and former World No. 1s Victoria Azarenka, Ana Ivanovic, Lleyton Hewitt, Caroline Wozniacki and Jelena Janković.
