'A sad end': Iconic bush tavern gutted by fire in WA's South West

One of Western Australia's last "old country pubs" has been gutted by fire in the state's South West.

The Quinninup tavern was a former timber milling company's worker's social club, nestled amongst tall Karri trees between Manjimup and Pemberton, around 350 kilometres from Perth.

The tavern was part of the Karri Lake area, which was established after the mill's closure in 1982 to bring tourists and holidaymakers to the region.

Manjimup police said fire tore through the historic building on Friday, destroying it despite the efforts of local firefighters and volunteers.

Police said fire crews are still at the site dousing the wreckage and will conduct an investigation into the cause of the blaze, which is still unknown.

The online nostalgia group Lost Perth said the building's history dates back to the early 1800's through farming and timber felling, with the timber company Millars establishing a small outpost there in the 1940s.

"A sad end to a hub of holiday memories for all of us who have visited the peaceful destination," Lost Perth said.
