Biotechnology is the use of living systems and organisms to develop or make products, or "any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use" (UN Convention on Biological Diversity, Art. 2). Depending on the tools and applications, it often overlaps with the (related) fields of bioengineering, biomedical engineering, biomanufacturing, etc.
For thousands of years, humankind has used biotechnology in agriculture, food production, and medicine. The term is largely believed to have been coined in 1919 by Hungarian engineer Károly Ereky. In the late 20th and early 21st century, biotechnology has expanded to include new and diverse sciences such as genomics, recombinant gene techniques, applied immunology, and development of pharmaceutical therapies and diagnostic tests.
Jason Luis Silva (born February 6, 1982) is a television personality, filmmaker, and public speaker. The Atlantic describes Silva as "A Timothy Leary of the Viral Video Age".
Silva was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and now resides in Los Angeles, California, and New York City. His mother is Ashkenazi Jewish, and his father converted to Judaism.
Silva earned a degree in film and philosophy from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. He, along with Max Lugavere, produced and starred in a video documentary/performance piece entitled "Textures of Selfhood"—an experimental film about hedonism and spirituality.
From 2005 to 2011, Silva was a presenter and producer on Al Gore's Emmy award winning cable network Current TV.
An active and prolific speaker, Silva has spoken at Google, The Economist Ideas Festival, the prestigious DLD Digital Life Design Conference in Munich, TEDGlobal, the Singularity Summit, the PSFK Conference, and the Festival of Dangerous Ideas.

Keira Havens gave insights on the beauty of Biotechnology at TEDxFrankfurt (http://www.tedxfrankfurt.de). Biotechnology is a fascinating and complex field, but it is often portrayed as a parody of itself - a scientist in lab coat and glasses, holding a syringe of blue liquid at a bench in an industrial clean room. Keira Havens is a scientist with a love for beauty, and as CEO of Revolution Bioengineering she has combined the two by making flowers that change color throughout the day. In her talk, she shares her vision of a vibrant and stunning future made possible through responsible innovation and the integration of computation, engineering, and biology. Keira wants to shatter some stereotypes, and inspire people to learn how beautiful biotechnology can be! This talk was given at a TEDx...

Cellular machinery is sophisticated. This isn't just big data, it's insanely big data that can be paired with the right software to make new medicines, fuels, and structural materials. Andrew Hessel is a futurist and catalyst in biological technologies, helping industry, academics, and authorities better understand the changes happening in life science. He is a Distinguished Researcher with Autodesk in their Bio/Nano Research Group, based out of San Francisco. He is also the co-founder of the Pink Army Cooperative, the world’s first cooperative biotechnology company, which is aiming to make open source viral therapies for cancer.
Cathal Garvey is the creator of the blog Indie Biotech, his personal endeavour to provide tools, materials and learning resources for biotechnology to individuals worldwide. Worldwide, the DIYbio movement is taking hold and generating renewed interest in community biotech. Cathal provides affordable, Open-Source-DNA development platforms, kits and strains for beginners to learn the engineering of bacteria easily, and perhaps later to facilitate engineering of plants and simple bugs such as Sea Monkeys. He hopes to change the face of biotech, and perhaps change some lives for the better in the process. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live ...

The biotechnology industry is cutting edge, developing life-saving medical devices as well as developing cleaner energy. It offers job opportunities for entry level employees, and exciting career ladders for employees who choose to continue their education. The biotechnology industry in California counts over 6,500 businesses. There are currently nearly 200,000 employees in the California biotech industry and in the next five years, it is projected that there will be close to 20,000 new jobs created in California, representing a 10% industrywide employment growth by 2019. This career exploration video was created by Path2Careers, a project of the California Community Colleges. For more information, visit www.Path2Careers.net.
This video serves as an ICT material for students enrolling AAB40A Molecular Biotechnology. The video outlines the definition, history and applications of Biotechnology. Genetics and recombinant DNA technology are also highlighted.
