The Alternative Music Foundation, a non-profit located at 924 Gilman Street, often referred to by its fans simply as "Gilman", is an all-ages, collectively organized music club. It is located in the West Berkeley area of Berkeley, California about a mile and a half west of the North Berkeley BART station and a quarter-mile west of San Pablo Avenue, at the corner of 8th and Gilman Streets.
Gilman is mostly associated with being the springboard for the 90s pop-punk revival led by bands like Green Day, Operation Ivy, Rancid, and The Offspring.
Gilman showcases mostly punk rock, specifically pop punk and hardcore punk acts, as well as heavy metal, industrial metal, grindcore, ska punk and, most recently, hip hop.
As early as 1984, punk rock fan and Maximumrocknroll founder Tim Yohannan began thinking about establishment of an all ages music space in the San Francisco bay area where bands could play and interact with audience members free of the structure of conventional music promotion. Actual organizational work began in 1985, with Yohannan joined in the effort by Victor Hayden, who had previously started a parallel project to start a punk club in Berkeley and who had already located a promising space in an industrial section of Berkeley. Although Yohannan initially had misgivings about the 924 Gilman Street location spotted by Hayden, he was ultimately persuaded that the building was a suitable space for the project which was envisioned. Negotiations began with the landlord and in April 1986 a lease was signed.
Berkeley (/ˈbɜːrkliː/ BURK-lee) is a city on the east shore of San Francisco Bay in northern Alameda County, California. It is named after the 18th-century Anglo-Irish bishop and philosopher George Berkeley. It borders the cities of Oakland and Emeryville to the south and the city of Albany and unincorporated community of Kensington to the north. Its eastern border with Contra Costa County generally follows the ridge of the Berkeley Hills. Its population at the 2010 census was 112,580.
Berkeley is the site of the oldest campus in the University of California system – the University of California, Berkeley – of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory which is managed and operated by the university, and the Graduate Theological Union. It is one of the most politically liberal cities in the United States.
The site of today's City of Berkeley was the territory of the Chochenyo/Huchiun band of the Ohlone people when the first Europeans arrived. Evidence of their existence in the area include pits in rock formations, which they used to grind acorns, and a shellmound, now mostly leveled and covered up, along the shoreline of San Francisco Bay at the mouth of Strawberry Creek. Other artifacts were discovered in the 1950s in the downtown area during remodeling of a commercial building, near the upper course of the creek.
Gilman may refer to:
Gilman Street (Chinese: 機利文街) is a street in Central, Hong Kong.
The street starts north at Connaught Road Central, crosses Des Voeux Road Central and continued as a dead-end pathway leading to several shops at the Centre. The street used to end at Queen's Road Central. The section between Des Voeux Road and Queen's Road used to allow vehicular traffic like the northern portion, and was once much wider. Nonetheless, as a result of large scale property developments like the Center, much of this section was demolished.
A tram stop is located at its junction with Des Voeux Road Central.
The street, like Gilman's Bazaar, a famous food street one block east was named after Gilman, Bowman and Co., one of the major British firms in Hong Kong in the mid-19th century which occupied the area.

Some folks might like this one. Thanks to everyone for making it happen- Corbett for helping me get into the show, Dan for shooting the stage camera, Jason for the audio mix (man it sounded good in there), and Agelos for editing it all together. I FINALLY GOT THE OK to post this!! Filmed by me (Shayne) with 1 Canon HFG30 on a monopod, 1 Canon HFG10 mounted to the ladder, and dan holding an HFG10. Audio via Sony PCM-M10 & DPA4061 mics. Note to aggregators: Please don't ask for my footage. Feel free to link to my site, but I hold you in the same regard as the guys who sold VHS tapes at record shows in the 80s/90s... making profit off of others' work. So, please, if you are aggregator, don't even try. My channel is non-monetized so all funds go to the artists. Enjoy!
BREAKING: Last night at 924 Gilman Street, for the first time since September 6, 1993, Green Day took the stage at the legendary punk venue for a high-energy two hour set. I was in the crowd for the entire show, and I didn't focus much of my time taking photos and videos since it was so crazy, but here is the little bit of video that I got from the show! Enjoy everyone. It's important to note that this show was a benefit event. All proceeds raised from the event were for fire relief for the victims of the fires that took out 674 23rd Street & 669/671 24th Street Residents, 1984 Printing, and AK Press. Thank you to everyone who came out and helped raise money for such a worthy cause. This has been another Shameless Promotion.

One of San Francisco's punk pioneers, David Hayes, co-founded Lookout Records, helped build Maximum Rock N Roll, 942 Gilman St., toured with Operation Ivy, hosted an MRR radio show, put out Green Day's first 7", ran Very Small Records, and then left it all behind. We wanted to know how it all started, why he left it all behind, and just what the fuck happened between David and his Lookout Records! partner, Lawrence Livermore.

The Soundwaves 'Take Charge' _924 Gilman Street, Berkekely August 24, 2013 with Danny Perez
Okay so some of you may know that Alicia and I are planning a trip to California. We're going in 2014 and we are saving every penny from now to then. We need enough money to buy a plane ticket to California and maybe back. We don't know if we'll be staying. We also need money for a 'Rent-a-car' and gas, food, laundromat, and necessities, like bathroom things and maybe concert tickets. You never know. The main reason why we're going to California is to see the history of our favorite band, Green Day. We will see 924 Gilman Street and Berkely where they grew up. We'll see Rudy's Can't Fail Cafe (which Mike Dirnt owns) and we'll see anything and everything about Green Day. Alicia and I are not spending ANY money unless we HAVE to. And that's only for emergencies. This will be the time of our ...

San Francisco Bay and Berkeley Pier at Sunset on September 18, 2013. If the title doesn't say it all, then you suck. I could have added the Golden Gate to the title, but that's a surprise. Unless you already know, or knew, or read this. The colors are accurate, actually.

So sweet, so beautiful
And everyday like a queen on a throne
Theres nobody, that knows how she feels
Aicha I know one day will be real
She moves, she moves like a breeze
I swear I can't get her out of my dreams
To have her shining right by my side
I'd sacrifice all the tears in my eyes
Boo whoo whoo
Aicha, Aicha
Passing me by (There she goes again)
Aicha, Aicha
My My My (Whoo)
Aicha, Aicha
Smile at me now
Oh I don't know I don't know
