Q&A;: Ethanol blended premium fuel

Mark Short

Most cars are able to use ethanol but it can be costly if you use it in a car not prepared for it.

Question

I have a 2001 Audi A3 and have always used premium unleaded petrol. I notice that my local United servo now has this petrol but states on the pump that it contains ethanol. I understand that ethanol is not recommended to use in my model car. I also thought that premium did not contain ethanol. I need to travel 20km to get "pure" premium so would like to know whether United is OK?

Many thanks,

Anne

Answer

Unfortunately your Audi A3 is one model of two that according to the manufacturer cannot use ethanol blended fuels. Most premium fuels do not contain ethanol but as you are aware some do. Regardless of fuel brand its best advised you do not fill up with these type of fuels, the use of ethanol blended petrol in your vehicle can result in early deterioration of fuel system components such as seals, hoses and fuel pump. A 20km drive could save you a lot more pain in the long run.
