Everglades
The Everglades (or Pa-hay-okee) are a natural region of tropical wetlands in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Florida, comprising the southern half of a large watershed. The system begins near Orlando with the Kissimmee River, which discharges into the vast but shallow Lake Okeechobee. Water leaving the lake in the wet season forms a slow-moving river 60 miles (97 km) wide and over 100 miles (160 km) long, flowing southward across a limestone shelf to Florida Bay at the southern end of the state. The Everglades experience a wide range of weather patterns, from frequent flooding in the wet season to drought in the dry season. Writer Marjory Stoneman Douglas popularized the term "River of Grass" to describe the sawgrass marshes, part of a complex system of interdependent ecosystems that include cypress swamps, the estuarine mangrove forests of the Ten Thousand Islands, tropical hardwood hammocks, pine rockland, and the marine environment of Florida Bay.
Human habitation in the southern portion of the Florida peninsula dates to 15,000 years ago. Before European colonization, the region was dominated by the native Calusa and Tequesta tribes. With Spanish colonization, both tribes declined gradually during the following two centuries. The Seminole formed from mostly Creek people who had been warring to the North; they assimilated other peoples and created a new culture. After being forced from northern Florida into the Everglades during the Seminole Wars of the early 19th century, they were able to resist removal by the United States Army. They adapted to the region.

National park
A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of 'wild nature' for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. The first area to use "national park" in its creation legislation was the US's Mackinac Island, in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result, Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.

Everglades National Park
Everglades National Park is a U.S. National Park in Florida that protects the southern 20 percent of the original Everglades. In the United States, it is the largest tropical wilderness, the largest wilderness of any kind east of the Mississippi River, and is visited on average by one million people each year. It is the third-largest national park in the lower 48 states after Death Valley and Yellowstone. It has been declared an International Biosphere Reserve, a World Heritage Site, and a Wetland of International Importance, one of only three locations in the world to appear on all three lists.
Although most U.S. national parks preserve unique geographic features, Everglades National Park was the first created to protect a fragile ecosystem. The Everglades are a network of wetlands and forests fed by a river flowing .25 miles (0.40 km) per day out of Lake Okeechobee, southwest into Florida Bay. The Park is the most significant breeding ground for tropical wading birds in North America, contains the largest mangrove ecosystem in the western hemisphere, is home to 36 threatened or protected species including the Florida panther, the American crocodile, and the West Indian manatee, and supports 350 species of birds, 300 species of fresh and saltwater fish, 40 species of mammals, and 50 species of reptiles. The majority of South Florida's fresh water, which is stored in the Biscayne Aquifer, is recharged in the park.

The establishment of the Everglades as a national park rescued a unique biosphere and it continues to be a place of natural enchantment and glorious mystique right up to the present day.

For many centuries this huge swamp area was inhabited by the Seminole Indians and today the Everglades are one of the greatest natural attractions in the U.S.A. Unlike the somewhat daunting appearance of the alligator the surroundings here are far more benign. The pink flamingo has for many years been associated with Florida and everywhere the croaking of frogs fills the air. There is a huge variety of birdlife as the vast areas of swampland are an ideal habitat and the water is not only rich in fish, various predators can also be found in large numbers. A total of six hundred species of fish live in the waters of the Everglades and in the summer months when the water level is particularly high there are huge shoals of fish to be found but in the dry months of winter they travel to deeper waters. The alligator is the indisputed king of these marshlands and no other creature is as powerful. We don’t only intend to observe the alligators from the shoreline, we also want to see them from within the water. They’re everywhere! Because of their valuable skin they were once almost exterminated. It is a fallacy that the alligator is a bloodthirsty, murderous creature as, unprovoked, this primeval reptile is almost indifferent to our presence and even from a close distance it remains perfectly calm. Despite all the recent encroachment by Man, the world of the alligator has retained much of its mysterious and magical aura and the allure of this unique region still continues to impress in a very remarkable way.

But a jealous fight and a flashing blade sent him on the run to the Everglades. Runnin' like a dog through the Everglades.
Now, the posse went in and they came back out. They said he'll die and there ain't no doubt.
It's an eye for an eye so the debt is paid. He won't last long in the Everglades. A man can't live in the Everglades.

Now, the years went by and his girl was wed. His fam'ly gave him up for dead.
But now and then the natives would say they'd seen him runnin' through the Everglades.
Now, he never heard the news on the radio. He was deep in the 'glades so he'll never know.
His runnin' and hidin' didn't make much sense for the jury had ruled it was self-defense.
