WVIT, channel 30 (branded on-air as NBC Connecticut), is an NBC owned-and-operated station licensed to New Britain, Connecticut, United States and serving the Hartford-New Haven television market. WVIT's offices and main studios are located on New Britain Avenue in West Hartford, and its transmitter is located on Rattlesnake Mountain in Farmington, Connecticut.
WVIT signed on for the first time on February 13, 1953 as WKNB-TV, owned by the New Britain Broadcasting Company along with WKNB radio (840 AM, now WRYM). The calls stood for Kensington-New Britain. It is Connecticut's second-oldest television station, and the first on the UHF band. It has been an NBC affiliate for nearly all of its history. However during its first two and a half years, it carried CBS programming.
In 1954, only a year after channel 30 signed on, Hartford and New Haven were combined into a single television market. However, WKNB's signal was not strong enough to cover southern Connecticut at the time – a problem that would hamper channel 30 for almost a quarter-century. As a result, a few CBS programs continued to be seen in the market on New Haven's WNHC-TV (channel 8, now WTNH) for another year due to this shortfall in channel 30's coverage. In 1955, WKNB dropped CBS and became a primary NBC affiliate. Well into the 1960s, many viewers northeast of Hartford used outdoor VHF antennas to watch NBC programming via WBZ-TV in Boston or WJAR in Providence, while viewers southwest of Hartford with outdoor TV antennas received NBC via network flagship WRCA-TV (now WNBC) in New York City; reception was often spotty.
New Britain, or Niu Briten, is the largest island in the Bismarck Archipelago (named after Otto von Bismarck) of Papua New Guinea. It is separated from the island of New Guinea by the Dampier and Vitiaz Straits and from New Ireland by St. George's Channel. The main towns of New Britain are Rabaul/Kokopo and Kimbe. The island is roughly the size of Taiwan.
While the island was part of German New Guinea, it was named Neupommern ("New Pomerania").
New Britain extends from 148°18'31" to 152°23'57" E longitude and from 4°08'25" to 6°18'31" S latitude. It is crescent-shaped, approximately 520 km (320 mi) along its southeastern coastline, and from 29 to 146 km (18–91 miles) wide, not including a small central peninsula. The air-line distance from west to east is 477 km (296 mi). The island is the 38th largest in the world, with an area of 36,520 km2 (14,100 sq mi).
Steep cliffs form some sections of the coastline; in others the mountains are further inland, and the coastal area is flat and bordered by coral reefs. The highest point, at 2,438 m (7,999 ft), is Mount Sinewit in the Baining range in the east. Most of the terrain is covered with tropical rainforest and several large rivers are fed by the high rainfall.
The National Broadcasting Company (NBC) is an American commercial broadcast television and radio network that is the flagship property of NBCUniversal, a subsidiary of Comcast. The network is headquartered in the Comcast Building (formerly known as the GE Building) at Rockefeller Center in New York City, with additional major offices near Los Angeles (at Universal City Plaza), Chicago (at the NBC Tower) and soon in Philadelphia at Comcast Innovation and Technology Center. The network is part of the Big Three television networks. NBC is sometimes referred to as the "Peacock Network", in reference to its stylized peacock logo, which was originally created in 1956 for its then-new color broadcasts and became the network's official emblem in 1979.
Founded in 1926 by the Radio Corporation of America (RCA), NBC is the oldest major broadcast network in the United States. In 1986, control of NBC passed to General Electric (GE) – which previously owned RCA and NBC until 1930, when it was forced to sell the companies as a result of antitrust charges – through its $6.4 billion purchase of RCA. Following the acquisition by GE (which later liquidated RCA), Bob Wright served as chief executive officer of NBC, remaining in that position until his retirement in 2007, when he was succeeded by Jeff Zucker. In 2003, French media company Vivendi merged its entertainment assets with GE, forming NBC Universal. Comcast purchased a controlling interest in the company in 2011, and acquired General Electric's remaining stake in 2013. Following the Comcast merger, Zucker left NBC Universal and was replaced as CEO by Comcast executive Steve Burke.

On January 25, 2012, NBC Connecticut (WVIT-TV New Britain-Hartford-New Haven) debuted completely new graphics. This montage is of their 6:00 PM news on January 26, 2012. It includes the opening, bumpers, talk of the town (formerly "Covering Connecticut"), weather alert open, sports open, and the close. I can't receive NBC 30 in HD on my TV tuner (it only gets HD over antenna, and even though I live just over the river from Hartford, I can't really get it), so it's an SD signal over cable. I looked for trouble and I found it son,
Straight down the barrel of a lawman's gun.
I'd try to run but I don't think I can,
You make one move and you're a dead man, friend.
Ain't livin' long like this,
Can't live at all like this, can I baby?
He slipped the handcuffs on behind my back,
Then left me freezin' on a steel rail rack.
Can't sleep at all in the jailhouse baby,
Ain't livin' long like this.
Grew up in Houston on the wayside drive,
Son of a car hop in some all nite dive.
Dad drove a stock car to an early death,
All I remember was a drunk man's breathe.
Ain't livin' long like this,
Can't live at all like this, can I baby?
We know the story how the wheel goes 'round,
Don't let 'em take you to the man downtown,
They got 'em all in the jailhouse baby.
Ain't livin' long like this,
Can't live at all like this, can I baby? Ah take it!
{Erik - Solo}
I live for Angel, she's a road house queen,
Makes Texas Ruby look like Sandra Dee.
I want to love her but I don't know how,
I'm at the bottom of a jailhouse now.
Ain't livin' long like this,
Can't live at all like this, can I baby?
You know the story 'bout the jailhouse rock,
Go on and do it, but just don't get caught.
They got 'em all in the jailhouse baby.
Oh, ain't livin' long like this.
Oh no!
