Geographic Location -- Gazakh district is located on the north-west of Azerbaijan. It shares borders with two states -- Georgia (9 km) and Armenia (168 km), as well as Agstafa district of Azerbaijan.Total area - 701 sq km.
Population - 85 900 (in 2007) people. 99.8% of the population are Azerbaijanis. 24% live in urban and 76% in rural areas. The district has been hosting about 7,000 displaced people forced to leave their homes as a result of aggression by Armenia.
Cities and towns - 1 city (Gazakh) and the following villages: Khanliglar, Aghkoynek, Garapapag, Dash Salahli, Chayli, Kommuna, Urkmezli, Ashaghi Salahli, Orta Salahli, Yukhary Salahli, Demirchiler, Alpout, Abbasbeyli, Demirchiler, Omaraghaly, Kosalar, Gazakhbeyli, Aslanbeyli, Gaymagly, Kemerli, Shikhli 1, Shikhli 2, Ashaghi Askipara, Yukhary Askipara, Heyrimli, Baganis Ayrum, Qizilhajili, Barkhudarli, Sofulu, Gushchu Ayrum, Mazam, Farahli, Jafarli, Bala Jafarli.
The villages Ashaghi Askipara, Yukhary Askipara, Barkhudarli, Sofulu, Heyrimli, Baganis Ayrum, Gushchu Ayrum, Qizilhajili are currently under Armenian occupation.
Center of the District -- City of Gazakh (41.10° N, 45.35° E). It received the city status in 1909. Population -- 21 700 (2003). Located at the intersection of Baku-Tbilisi and Agstafa-Yerevan highways on both banks of the river Agstafachay. Distance from Baku -- 464 km.
Nature -- the territory is mainly flat, with the mountain area of the Lesser Caucasus Mountains (300-800 m above sea level) on the south and south-west of the district. Steppe Garayazy stretches on the north. Along the territory of the area, there are flowing rivers like Kura, Chogaz, Agstafachay, Khramchay and Injasu. The riparian forests are located along river Kura. There is a picturesque grotto with famous spring Damjily on the slopes Avey mountain.
Natural resources - there are reserves of marble, building stone, limestone, raw materials for cement, clay, sand and lead.
The climate -- is characterized by mild winters and hot summers. Temperature in January ranged between 0 -- 5 C°, in July -- from 20°C till +30°C. The annual precipitation is 350-700 mm.
The economy -- the foundation of the economy is agriculture and animal husbandry. The area is known for the local dilboz breed of horses. There are also the enterprises of processing industry, such as cannery, wine making, meat.

Qazakh District
Gazakh (Azerbaijani: Qazax; also known as Kazakh or Qazakh) is a rayon of Azerbaijan. It has two exclaves inside Armenia, Yukhari Askipara and Barkhudarli, both of which came under Armenian control during the Nagorno-Karabakh War.
History
In antiquity, this rayon was part of the province of Utik. The region was conquered by a succession of neighbouring powers or invaders, including Sassanid Persians, the Byzantine Empire, the Arabs, the Seljuq Turks, the Georgians, the Mongols, the Timurids, the Kara Koyunlu and Ak Koyunlu Turkoman tribes, and finally Safavid Iran. It was also ruled by Ottoman Empire between 1578 and 1607 and again 1722 and 1735.
After the Russo-Persian War (1804-1813), the Russian Empire gained control of the area by virtue of the Treaty of Gulistan. Under Russian rule, it was part of Tiflis Governorate before forming the northeastern part of the Kazakh uyezd of the Elisabethpol Governorate in 1868. A contemporary military historian noted the following ethnographic detail: "Abbas Mirza's route lay through the country of the great tribe of the Casaks, which is extremely strong and thickly wooded." He further notes that: "These have no connection with the Russian Cossacks. They are descended from men of the Kirgis Casaks, left by Genghis Khan. They are frequently called Kara Papaks, from wearing black sheep-skin caps."

The maze of narrow streets in which several single-storey buildings are still inhabited has been designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. The city’s largest water storage tank is dominated by six wind towers that capture the slightest breeze that in turn cool down the stored water. Nearby, Agh-E-Dolat A-Bad, the magnificent palace residence of Mohamma Taqui Khan Bafqi who was Governor of Yazd from 1747 A.D. Yazd is not only an ancient culture, it is also an Oriental dream!
