Gappy Ranks
Jacob Lee Williams (born c.1983), better known as Gappy Ranks, is an English dancehall musician of Jamaican and Dominican origin, from Harlesden, London.
Career
Born in Harlesden to a Jamaican father and Dominican mother, he dealt with numerous obstacles including homelessness after leaving school. Once he overcame these issues he joined up with childhood friend and fellow artist Redmann (UK), and was enlisted into the UK dancehall collective Suncycle, along with local artists such as Cash Money, Lady Chann and Naff Skrilla. Their first album titled Suncyle included Ranks' homage to his home town, "Harlesden". Their second album I Am Somebody was released on the UK label Jamdown Records. Ranks left the group in 2004 and began his solo career.
Nicknamed 'Gappy' due to the gap between his front teeth, he initially worked under the name 'Daddy Gappy', before opting for the Cutty Ranks-influenced 'Gappy Ranks'. In 2005 Gappy Ranks was featured on the Vice law entertainment mix tapes. That same year, he won the 'Best Song' award at London's Silk Awards for "Little Understanding", released by UK reggae record label Stingray Records. Also in 2005, Ranks contributed to the single "What We Do" by Kray Twinz featuring Twista and Lethal B, which charted nationally in the UK at number 23. Ranks performed live at Earl's Court in front of a crowd of 17,000 for the first Kiss 100 awards. He also played a full UK tour which brought him to cities such as Manchester, Birmingham, and Newcastle. He recorded for former UK reggae giants Jet Star Records in north west London where he became assistant engineer, giving him time to grow and develop his love for music and network which led him to work with record label Peckings.

Barbados (
i/bÉ‘Ë?rˈbeɪdÉ’s/ or /bÉ‘Ë?rˈbeɪdoÊŠs/) is a sovereign island country in the Lesser Antilles, in the Americas. It is 34 kilometres (21 mi) in length and up to 23 kilometres (14 mi) in width, covering an area of 432 square kilometres (167 sq mi). It is situated in the western area of the North Atlantic and 100 kilometres (62 mi) east of the Windward Islands and the Caribbean Sea; therein, it is about 168 kilometres (104 mi) east of the islands of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and 400 kilometres (250 mi) north-east of Trinidad and Tobago. Barbados is outside of the principal Atlantic hurricane belt. Its capital is Bridgetown.
Inhabited by Kalingo people since the 13th century, and prior to that by other Amerindians, Barbados was visited by Spanish navigators in the late 15th century and claimed for the Spanish Crown. It first appears on a Spanish map from 1511. The Portuguese visited the island in 1536, but they left it unclaimed, with their only remnants being an introduction of wild hogs for a good supply of meat whenever the island was visited. An English ship, the Olive Blossom, arrived in Barbados in 1625; its men took possession of it in the name of King James I. In 1627, the first permanent settlers arrived from England, and it became an English and later British colony.

Barbados (Typically Tropical song)
"Barbados" was a UK Number 1 single released in May 1975 by Typically Tropical. "Barbados" entered the UK Singles Chart at number 37 in late June 1975, and five weeks later was at Number 1 for a week. In total, "Barbados" spent eleven weeks on the chart. The track also reached Number 1 on the Irish Singles Chart, Number 1 on the South African Singles Chart, and 20 on the Australian Singles Chart (Kent Music Report). The track was later released on an album in 1975 by Gull Records. The album was named Barbados Sky.
Follow-up singles "Rocket Now" and "The Ghost Song" failed to chart, leaving "Typically Tropical" as one-hit wonders.
In 1999 a reworked version of the song, renamed "We're Going to Ibiza", also reached the UK Number 1 spot for The Vengaboys.

The song is about a bus driver who escapes Brixton, London for the tropical island of Barbados, where he's going to see his girlfriend. The song has a tropical feel and a reggae vibe, but the Typically Tropical duo of Jeffrey Calvert and Max West are from a very different climate: Wales. They were engineers at Morgan Studios in London when they wrote this song. Calvert had been on vacation in Jamaica, and they wanted to write a reggae song. They came up with "Barbados" in two hours on a guitar and piano. Calvert and West didn't have a record deal when they wrote this song, but they were able to record it at Morgan Studios, where they worked, after sessions for clients were over. THIS is the place for a holiday. We are cruising the Caribbean, passing all sorts of tropical islands. Some have nature, some have culture and some just have the most amazing beaches! Barbados is without a doubt the most relaxed island for a family holiday. In this video I'll take you to paradise at Silver Sands Beach. We have a cottage overlooking the Caribbean Sea. We also rent a car, cruise around the entire island and visit all the major sights. We stop at Miami Beach, Brownes Beach, Bridgetown, Paynes Bay, Animal Flower Cave, Bathsheba & the Soup Bowl and Bottom Bay.
In the last episode you saw us on Dominica. CNN Travel listed the island among the most beautiful places on earth. We stayed in a tree house overlooking the jungle, swam through the Titou Gorge (made famous by Pirates of the Caribbean) and we explored the mountains full of waterfalls.
We also visited Guadeloupe, the biggest of the French Antilles. On a road trip we stopped at jungle waterfalls and the most incredible beaches. In Pointe des Châteaux we saw the extreme differences. In a dry rocky area we see pink lakes, high cliffs and a famous cross statue. Be sure to watch these episodes too!
The entire trip started already months ago in the Dominican Republic. We hopped over to Puerto Rico and visited Anguilla, Saint Martin, Saint Barth, Saint Kitts & Nevis and Antigua. After this episode we visit Martinique, Saint Lucia, Barbados, Grenada, Tobago and the Bahamas. Follow us on this Caribbean tour, now on Barbados and then many other beautiful destinations in the Caribbean Sea. THIS is the place for a holiday. We are cruising the Caribbean, passing all sorts of tropical islands. Some have nature, some have culture and some just have the most amazing beaches! Barbados is without a doubt the most relaxed island for a family holiday. In this video I'll take you to paradise at Silver Sands Beach. We have a cottage overlooking the Caribbean Sea. We also rent a car, cruise around the entire island and visit all the major sights. We stop at Miami Beach, Brownes Beach, Bridgetown, Paynes Bay, Animal Flower Cave, Bathsheba & the Soup Bowl and Bottom Bay.
In the last episode you saw us on Dominica. CNN Travel listed the island among the most beautiful places on earth. We stayed in a tree house overlooking the jungle, swam through the Titou Gorge (made famous by Pirates of the Caribbean) and we explored the mountains full of waterfalls.
We also visited Guadeloupe, the biggest of the French Antilles. On a road trip we stopped at jungle waterfalls and the most incredible beaches. In Pointe des Châteaux we saw the extreme differences. In a dry rocky area we see pink lakes, high cliffs and a famous cross statue. Be sure to watch these episodes too!
The entire trip started already months ago in the Dominican Republic. We hopped over to Puerto Rico and visited Anguilla, Saint Martin, Saint Barth, Saint Kitts & Nevis and Antigua. After this episode we visit Martinique, Saint Lucia, Barbados, Grenada, Tobago and the Bahamas. Follow us on this Caribbean tour, now on Barbados and then many other beautiful destinations in the Caribbean Sea. The song is about a bus driver who escapes Brixton, London for the tropical island of Barbados, where he's going to see his girlfriend. The song has a tropical feel and a reggae vibe, but the Typically Tropical duo of Jeffrey Calvert and Max West are from a very different climate: Wales.
They were engineers at Morgan Studios in London when they wrote this song. Calvert had been on vacation in Jamaica, and they wanted to write a reggae song. They came up with "Barbados" in two hours on a guitar and piano.
Calvert and West didn't have a record deal when they wrote this song, but they were able to record it at Morgan Studios, where they worked, after sessions for clients were over. They used backing tracks and instruments that were lying around the studio, but when Gull Records signed them, they re-recorded the song using top studio musicians, including guitarist Chris Spedding, The Tornados' drummer Clem Cattini, and Blue Mink's Roger Coulam on keyboards.
Jeff Calvert and Max West provided the vocals, with West's alter ego Tobias Wilcock providing the voice of the captain of the song's ubiquitous Coconut Airways.
"Barbados" went to #1 in the UK in August 1975, giving the small Gull Records label a surprise hit and an influx of cash. At the time, Gull had a promising rock band on their label called Judas Priest, whose first album, released a year earlier, went nowhere. Gull knew they needed a different producer, so they assigned the task to Typically Tropical (Jeffrey Calvert and Max West). The band wasn't thrilled with the decision, but it worked out very well for them: Calvert and West knew their way around a studio and didn't try to alter their sound of the second album 'Sad Wings of Destiny'. Judas Priest had co-producer role, giving them creative control and valuable studio experience that came in handy - they co-produced every subsequent album they recorded as well.

Typically Tropical sold 381,456 copies of "Barbados" (as of November 2019) compared to the cover, "We're Going to Ibiza" by the Vengaboys which has sold 1,862,451 (as of November 2019).

Barbados TYPICALLY TROPICAL (with lyrics)
Love it or hate it, this novelty song was a smash #1 hit in the summer of 1975 here in Britain. "Typically Tropical" were actually two white guys, Jeff Calvert and Max West, who were sound engineers at Trojan Records.

The song is about a bus driver who escapes Brixton, London for the tropical island of Barbados, where he's going to see his girlfriend. The song has a tropical feel and a reggae vibe, but the Typically Tropical duo of Jeffrey Calvert and Max West are from a very different climate: Wales.
They were engineers at Morgan Studios in London when they wrote this song. Calvert had been on vacation in Jamaica, and they wanted to write a reggae song. They came up with "Barbados" in two hours on a guitar and piano.
Calvert and West didn't have a record deal when they wrote this song, but they were able to record it at Morgan Studios, where they worked, after sessions for clients were over. They used backing tracks and instruments that were lying around the studio, but when Gull Records signed them, they re-recorded the song using top studio musicians, including guitarist Chris Spedding, The Tornados' drummer Clem Cattini, and Blue Mink's Roger Coulam on keyboards.
Jeff Calvert and Max West provided the vocals, with West's alter ego Tobias Wilcock providing the voice of the captain of the song's ubiquitous Coconut Airways.
"Barbados" went to #1 in the UK in August 1975, giving the small Gull Records label a surprise hit and an influx of cash. At the time, Gull had a promising rock band on their label called Judas Priest, whose first album, released a year earlier, went nowhere. Gull knew they needed a different producer, so they assigned the task to Typically Tropical (Jeffrey Calvert and Max West). The band wasn't thrilled with the decision, but it worked out very well for them: Calvert and West knew their way around a studio and didn't try to alter their sound of the second album 'Sad Wings of Destiny'. Judas Priest had co-producer role, giving them creative control and valuable studio experience that came in handy - they co-produced every subsequent album they recorded as well.

THIS is the place for a holiday. We are cruising the Caribbean, passing all sorts of tropical islands. Some have nature, some have culture and some just have the most amazing beaches! Barbados is without a doubt the most relaxed island for a family holiday. In this video I'll take you to paradise at Silver Sands Beach. We have a cottage overlooking the Caribbean Sea. We also rent a car, cruise around the entire island and visit all the major sights. We stop at Miami Beach, Brownes Beach, Bridgetown, Paynes Bay, Animal Flower Cave, Bathsheba & the Soup Bowl and Bottom Bay.
In the last episode you saw us on Dominica. CNN Travel listed the island among the most beautiful places on earth. We stayed in a tree house overlooking the jungle, swam through the Titou Gorge (made famous by Pirates of the Caribbean) and we explored the mountains full of waterfalls.
We also visited Guadeloupe, the biggest of the French Antilles. On a road trip we stopped at jungle waterfalls and the most incredible beaches. In Pointe des Châteaux we saw the extreme differences. In a dry rocky area we see pink lakes, high cliffs and a famous cross statue. Be sure to watch these episodes too!
The entire trip started already months ago in the Dominican Republic. We hopped over to Puerto Rico and visited Anguilla, Saint Martin, Saint Barth, Saint Kitts & Nevis and Antigua. After this episode we visit Martinique, Saint Lucia, Barbados, Grenada, Tobago and the Bahamas. Follow us on this Caribbean tour, now on Barbados and then many other beautiful destinations in the Caribbean Sea. The song is about a bus driver who escapes Brixton, London for the tropical island of Barbados, where he's going to see his girlfriend. The song has a tropical feel and a reggae vibe, but the Typically Tropical duo of Jeffrey Calvert and Max West are from a very different climate: Wales.
They were engineers at Morgan Studios in London when they wrote this song. Calvert had been on vacation in Jamaica, and they wanted to write a reggae song. They came up with "Barbados" in two hours on a guitar and piano.
Calvert and West didn't have a record deal when they wrote this song, but they were able to record it at Morgan Studios, where they worked, after sessions for clients were over. They used backing tracks and instruments that were lying around the studio, but when Gull Records signed them, they re-recorded the song using top studio musicians, including guitarist Chris Spedding, The Tornados' drummer Clem Cattini, and Blue Mink's Roger Coulam on keyboards.
Jeff Calvert and Max West provided the vocals, with West's alter ego Tobias Wilcock providing the voice of the captain of the song's ubiquitous Coconut Airways.
"Barbados" went to #1 in the UK in August 1975, giving the small Gull Records label a surprise hit and an influx of cash. At the time, Gull had a promising rock band on their label called Judas Priest, whose first album, released a year earlier, went nowhere. Gull knew they needed a different producer, so they assigned the task to Typically Tropical (Jeffrey Calvert and Max West). The band wasn't thrilled with the decision, but it worked out very well for them: Calvert and West knew their way around a studio and didn't try to alter their sound of the second album 'Sad Wings of Destiny'. Judas Priest had co-producer role, giving them creative control and valuable studio experience that came in handy - they co-produced every subsequent album they recorded as well.

Typically Tropical sold 381,456 copies of "Barbados" (as of November 2019) compared to the cover, "We're Going to Ibiza" by the Vengaboys which has sold 1,862,451 (as of November 2019).

Jacob Lee Williams (born c.1983), better known as Gappy Ranks, is an English dancehall musician of Jamaican and Dominican origin, from Harlesden, London.
Career
Born in Harlesden to a Jamaican father and Dominican mother, he dealt with numerous obstacles including homelessness after leaving school. Once he overcame these issues he joined up with childhood friend and fellow artist Redmann (UK), and was enlisted into the UK dancehall collective Suncycle, along with local artists such as Cash Money, Lady Chann and Naff Skrilla. Their first album titled Suncyle included Ranks' homage to his home town, "Harlesden". Their second album I Am Somebody was released on the UK label Jamdown Records. Ranks left the group in 2004 and began his solo career.
Nicknamed 'Gappy' due to the gap between his front teeth, he initially worked under the name 'Daddy Gappy', before opting for the Cutty Ranks-influenced 'Gappy Ranks'. In 2005 Gappy Ranks was featured on the Vice law entertainment mix tapes. That same year, he won the 'Best Song' award at London's Silk Awards for "Little Understanding", released by UK reggae record label Stingray Records. Also in 2005, Ranks contributed to the single "What We Do" by Kray Twinz featuring Twista and Lethal B, which charted nationally in the UK at number 23. Ranks performed live at Earl's Court in front of a crowd of 17,000 for the first Kiss 100 awards. He also played a full UK tour which brought him to cities such as Manchester, Birmingham, and Newcastle. He recorded for former UK reggae giants Jet Star Records in north west London where he became assistant engineer, giving him time to grow and develop his love for music and network which led him to work with record label Peckings.

Barbados was a feelgood song that reached No 1 in the UK charts in August 1975. The Venga Boys sang an altered version of the song changing the Barbados into Ibiza in 1999 and had a hit with it. This is my version of the Typically Tropical version.

Typically Tropical were a British duo comprising Geraint Wyn Hughes and Jeffrey Calvert, who had met through Hughes' band, Quasar. They would write and record songs at Morgan Studios, where Calvert worked with his father, when no-one else was around. Calvert had been on holiday in Barbados and based the song on his experiences. It was recorded with various session musicians, including guitarist Chris Spedding, drummer Clem Cattini, and Vic Flick.
