Glory is a celebration of a little-known act of mass courage during the Civil War. Simply put, the heroes involved have been ignored by history due to racism. Those heroes were the all-black members of the 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, headed by Col. Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick), the son of an influential abolitionist (played by an uncredited Jane Alexander). Despite the fact that the Civil War is ostensibly being fought on their behalf, the black soldiers are denied virtually every privilege and amenity that is matter of course for their white counterparts; as in armies past and future, they are given the most menial and demeaning of tasks. Still, none of the soldiers quit the regiment when given the chance. The unofficial leaders of the group are gravedigger John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman) and fugitive slave Trip (Denzel Washington), respectively representing the brains and heart of the organization. Glory (1989 film)
Glory is a 1989 American war film directed by Edward Zwick and starring Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes and Morgan Freeman. The screenplay was written by Kevin Jarre, based on the personal letters of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the novel One Gallant Rush by Peter Burchard (reissued in 1990 after the movie), and Lay This Laurel (1973), Lincoln Kirstein's compilation of photos of the monument to the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry on Boston Common.
The film is about one of the first military units of the Union Army during the American Civil War to be made up entirely of African-American men (except for its officers), as told from the point of view of Colonel Shaw, its white commanding officer. The regiment is especially known for its heroic actions at Fort Wagner.
The film was nominated for five Academy Awards and won three, including Denzel Washington for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Private Trip. It won many other awards, including from the British Academy, the Golden Globe Awards, the Kansas City Film Critics Circle, Political Film Society, the NAACP, among others.

I came across an old favorite CD of mine the other day. "Passion" by Peter Gabriel. It came out in 1989 and was used in Martin Scorsese's "The Last Temptation of Christ". It is a phenomenal piece of work, it hasn't aged at all and in some ways sounds even more relevant today. I really wanted to use the title track "Passion" in a video piece. As I looked at a bunch of my footage I realized it would work best with my misty sunrise footage. Building most of it around the moment the sun pokes up over the distant horizon, and coupling it to the peak of the mournful vocal in the music. I sometimes base a whole video around one moment like this. Some of this footage I used in "Sirens of the Mist" and at the beginning of "Autumn Glory" but I feel this version represents the best use of the misty dawn footage and certainly shows more of it, this one is long! Clocking in at close to 8 minutes. Some of this is shot with my Sony V1U and other parts were done with the EX1. Please find what good you can in it and let me know what you think! I'm not allowing downloads as some have been taking my work and putting sections of it in their own videos on YouTube. Sorry a few have to ruin it for others. -

A swarm of flies even invades the living room one evening, as if drawn to some foul presence deep within its walls. Worried by all the alarming occurrences, Nina investigates the house's history, and is told by its previous owner Amelia that the house has a long history of malevolence and violence. Rupert's personality also begins to deteriorate. Not only does he begin to neglect his work, he also becomes obsessed with building a swimming pool beside the house. When the carpenters and workers flee the house, Rupert begins digging to make the pool himself. And what he unleashes from the digging has horrific consequences on his entire family...

The Rising Sun
I came across an old favorite CD of mine the other day. "Passion" by Peter Gabriel. It came out in 1989 and was used in Martin Scorsese's "The Last Temptation of Christ". It is a phenomenal piece of work, it hasn't aged at all and in some ways sounds even more relevant today. I really wanted to use the title track "Passion" in a video piece. As I looked at a bunch of my footage I realized it would work best with my misty sunrise footage. Building most of it around the moment the sun pokes up over the distant horizon, and coupling it to the peak of the mournful vocal in the music. I sometimes base a whole video around one moment like this. Some of this footage I used in "Sirens of the Mist" and at the beginning of "Autumn Glory" but I feel this version represents the best use of...

In Dead Poets Society (1989), a charismatic teacher (Robin Williams) tries to instill a love for poetry into his students. In All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), a charismatic teacher (Arnold Lucy) tries to imbue his students with a love for their fatherland. Both teachers, and both movies, employ similar tactics. The mise-en-scène, the dialogue and the action are remarkably alike. Both teachers make their case using Latin phrases. They both employ military metaphors to stir up their students. The rows of pupils are gradually goaded into action, until they stand up and loudly and proudly agree with their respective teachers. Pages are torn out and tossed about. Glory is a celebration of a little-known act of mass courage during the Civil War. Simply put, the heroes involved have been ignored by history due to racism. Those heroes were the all-black members of the 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, headed by Col. Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick), the son of an influential abolitionist (played by an uncredited Jane Alexander). Despite the fact that the Civil War is ostensibly being fought on their behalf, the black soldiers are denied virtually every privilege and amenity that is matter of course for their white counterparts; as in armies past and future, they are given the most menial and demeaning of tasks. Still, none of the soldiers quit the regiment when given the chance. The unofficial leaders of the group are gravedigger John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman) and fugitive slave Trip (Denzel Washington), respectively representing the brains and heart of the organization. The 54th acquit themselves valiantly at Fort Wagner, SC, charging a fortification manned by some 1,000 Confederates. Glory was based on Lincoln Kirstein's Lay This Laurel and Peter Burchard's One Gallant Rush; the latter book was founded on the letters of Col. Robert Gould Shaw, the real-life character played by Matthew Broderick. The film won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for co-star Denzel Washington, and additional statuettes for Best Cinematography (Freddie Francis) and Sound Recording.

Glory is a celebration of a little-known act of mass courage during the Civil War. Simply put, the heroes involved have been ignored by history due to racism. Those heroes were the all-black members of the 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, headed by Col. Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick), the son of an influential abolitionist (played by an uncredited Jane Alexander). Despite the fact that the Civil War is ostensibly being fought on their behalf, the black soldiers are denied virtually every privilege and amenity that is matter of course for their white counterparts; as in armies past and future, they are given the most menial and demeaning of tasks. Still, none of the soldiers quit the regiment when given the chance. The unofficial leaders of the group are gravedigger John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman) and fugitive slave Trip (Denzel Washington), respectively representing the brains and heart of the organization. The 54th acquit themselves valiantly at Fort Wagner, SC, charging a fortification manned by some 1,000 Confederates. Glory was based on Lincoln Kirstein's Lay This Laurel and Peter Burchard's One Gallant Rush; the latter book was founded on the letters of Col. Robert Gould Shaw, the real-life character played by Matthew Broderick. The film won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for co-star Denzel Washington, and additional statuettes for Best Cinematography (Freddie Francis) and Sound Recording.

I came across an old favorite CD of mine the other day. "Passion" by Peter Gabriel. It came out in 1989 and was used in Martin Scorsese's "The Last Temptation...
I came across an old favorite CD of mine the other day. "Passion" by Peter Gabriel. It came out in 1989 and was used in Martin Scorsese's "The Last Temptation of Christ". It is a phenomenal piece of work, it hasn't aged at all and in some ways sounds even more relevant today.
I really wanted to use the title track "Passion" in a video piece. As I looked at a bunch of my footage I realized it would work best with my misty sunrise footage. Building most of it around the moment the sun pokes up over the distant horizon, and coupling it to the peak of the mournful vocal in the music. I sometimes base a whole video around one moment like this.
Some of this footage I used in "Sirens of the Mist" and at the beginning of "Autumn Glory" but I feel this version represents the best use of the misty dawn footage and certainly shows more of it, this one is long! Clocking in at close to 8 minutes. Some of this is shot with my Sony V1U and other parts were done with the EX1.
Please find what good you can in it and let me know what you think! I'm not allowing downloads as some have been taking my work and putting sections of it in their own videos on YouTube. Sorry a few have to ruin it for others.

Mani Nasry an exceptionally talented filmmaker, actor and artist with a sophisticated breadth of education, skills, experience, and professional accomplishments. In Dead Poets Society (1989), a charismatic teacher (Robin Williams) tries to instill a love for poetry into his students. In All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), a charismatic teacher (Arnold Lucy) tries to imbue his students with a love for their fatherland.
Both teachers, and both movies, employ similar tactics. The mise-en-scène, the dialogue and the action are remarkably alike. Both teachers make their case using Latin phrases. They both employ military metaphors to stir up their students. The rows of pupils are gradually goaded into action, until they stand up and loudly and proudly agree with their respective teachers. Pages are torn out and tossed about. Triumphant music rises towards the end of the scenes, underscoring the symbolic victory of the teachers.
And yet, the meaning of both scenes couldn’t be more different. In Dead Poets Society, English teacher John Keating wants his students to think for themselves. He teaches them to appreciate the beauty of poetry, the power of words. In All Quiet on the Western Front, the jingoistic teacher Kantorek wants his students to fall in line with national (war) policy and forget about their private ambitions. He teaches against the arts, praising the power of the nation and the glory to be found in war.
