Frank Darabont's Defense of Abusive 'Walking Dead' Emails: "Stress" and "Extraordinary Crisis"

12 July 2017 11:46 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - TV News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - TV News news »

Warning: This story contains explicit language.

The history of Hollywood is littered with legendary freak-outs — think David O. Russell's berating of Lily Tomlin on the set of 2004's I Heart Huckabees, or Christian Bale's Terminator Salvation tantrum in 2009. Now joining that ignominious list is Frank Darabont, whose spectacularly abusive emails to AMC executives and crew during the fraught production of the first season of The Walking Dead have surfaced amid his $280 million lawsuit against the network.

Darabont, who co-created the blockbuster cable hit, was fired as showrunner from the series early in its second season. He and his CAA team »

Universal's 'Scarface' Reboot Loses Director David Ayer (Exclusive)

12 July 2017 12:31 PM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

The difficult quest for a director for Universal's Scarface continues since the studio has parted ways with Suicide Squad's David Ayer.

Ayer's take on the script was "too dark" for the studio's taste, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter, though given that Scarface is, as one insider put it, "the holy grail of contemporary gangster movies," a certain amount of darkness would be necessary.

Ayer won acclaim for penning the hard-hitting Training Day and making gritty movies such as End of Watch. Universal's Scarface is to trade the Miami locale of the 1983 film version for L.A.

Why PETA Is So in Love With ‘War For the Planet of the Apes’

War For the Planet of the Apes,” like the previous films in the franchise, is full of apes and other primates, yet not a single real monkey was used during filming — something that thrills People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). PETA’s Senior Vice President Lisa Lange praised the blockbuster as “the perfect example and proof that you don’t need to use animals in films about animals,” in a conversation with TheWrap. “It shows that it’s doable,” she said. “All you have to do is care enough to make it happen. This is a perfect example of a filmmaker. »

As we all know, Harrison Ford isn’t confined to outer space for wild adventures–he’s gotten in some situations right here on Earth that make Jabba the Hut look tame. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the movie won four Oscars and stole the hearts of anyone who had a hard time falling in love with a man living in a galaxy far, far, away. On its anniversary, TheWrap is examining the movie to see what–if anything–from the film is factually based. Are the Hovito people real? »

Randy Newman Bashes President Trump, Putin and Himself in Hilarious Radio Concert

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Anyone who’s seen Randy Newman perform knows that even though he’s one of the greatest songwriters of the past 50 years — a multiple Grammy, Emmy and Oscar winner, contributor of classic songs to films like the three “Toy Story” titles, “Seabiscuit,” “James and the Giant Peach” — the real gold is in his concerts is his hilarious commentary, an undistilled, often unfiltered version of the cutting, self-deprecating and side-splitting humor that appears in his lyrics.

And his performance at New York’s Electric Lady Studios, which will be broadcast on Wfuv-FM/New York during the week of August 4, when “Dark Matter,” his first album of new material in nine years, is released — was certainly no exception. During the brief performance, which found him playing several songs — classics like “Sail Away” and “Feels Like Home” as well as selections from the new album, noodling on several more, and answering questions both from DJ Rita Houston and submitted »

Emmy Miracles Can Happen

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Great acting conjures worlds. We are living in a golden age of magical special effects, on large and small screens. But smart writers know that the skills of the very best actors can transport and move viewers like nothing else.

An actor locked into a career-making performance can simply tell a story, and even if we can’t necessarily see what they’re describing, we are right there with them — imagining, remembering, under their spells. Carrie Coon and Aisha Hinds were in very different shows this year, but they both provided more than ample proof of this very point. Emmy voters would do well to remember Coon’s brilliant performance as a lead actress in HBO’s “The Leftovers,” and in the guest actress in a drama category, Aisha Hinds’ name should appear for her transfixing performance as Harriet Tubman in “Underground.”

Both of these potential nominations might be seen as the longest of long shots. But »
