The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a mixed martial arts promotion company. It is the largest in the world and features most of the top-ranked fighters in the sport. Based in the United States, the UFC produces events worldwide that showcase ten weight divisions and abide by the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts. The UFC has held over 300 events to date. Dana White serves as the president of the UFC while brothers Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta control the UFC's parent company, Zuffa, LLC.
The first Ultimate Fighting Championship event was held on November 12, 1993 at the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado. The purpose of the early Ultimate Fighting Championship competitions were to identify the most effective martial art in a fight, with minimal rules, between competitors of different fighting disciplines, including boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Sambo, wrestling, Muay Thai, karate, judo, and other styles. In subsequent competitions, fighters began adopting effective techniques from more than one discipline, which indirectly helped create an entirely separate style of fighting known as present-day mixed martial arts.
Robert Glenn "Robbie" Lawler (born March 20, 1982) is an American professional mixed martial artist and current Welterweight champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. A professional competitor since 2001, Lawler is also a former EliteXC Middleweight Champion, and has formerly competed in Strikeforce, PRIDE, and the IFL. Since December 6, 2014, Lawler has held the UFC Welterweight Championship and is currently #6 pound-for-pound in official UFC rankings.
Lawler was born in San Diego, California and moved to Bettendorf, Iowa at the age of ten to live with his father. Lawler began training in karate at the age of nine and later attended Bettendorf High School where he received All-State honors in wrestling and football. Lawler was taken under the wing of Pat Miletich when he was 16 years old and began training with Miletich Fighting Systems as soon as he graduated in 2000.
Lawler made his professional debut in 2001 and won his first four career fights all by TKO/KO, his second fight being in the IFC.
Tyron Lakent Woodley (born April 17, 1982) is an American mixed martial artist and a former amateur wrestler for the University of Missouri. He is currently signed to a deal with the UFC, and formerly competed for Strikeforce. As of January 1st 2016, he is #2 in official UFC welterweight rankings.
Tyron Woodley was born and raised in Ferguson, Missouri, an area a few miles from St. Louis, Missouri. He was born eleventh of the thirteen children of Sylvester and Deborah Woodley. He was raised by his mother after his father left early in his life. In high school he was on the honor roll every term, received All-Conference honors in football, was a two-time state finalist in wrestling finishing 48-0 and winning a state title.
After graduating from McCluer High School in 2000, he had offers from Nebraska, Northern Iowa, and Missouri. After going on his recruiting visit to Nebraska, he had verbally committed but later discovered Nebraska's head wrestling coach was forced to resign. He decided he would attend Mizzou and help rebuild the wrestling team. Tyron Woodley graduated from Mizzou in 2005 with a major in Agricultural Economics. He is a teammate of Current MMA fighter and 2008 Olympian Ben Askren.
Year 201 (CCI) was a common year starting on Thursday (link will display the full calendar) of the Julian calendar. At the time, it was known as the Year of the Consulship of Fabianus and Arrius (or, less frequently, year 954 Ab urbe condita). The denomination 201 for this year has been used since the early medieval period, when the Anno Domini calendar era became the prevalent method in Europe for naming years.
