Mothers are women who inhabit or perform the role of bearing some relation to their children, who may or may not be their biological offspring. Thus, dependent on the context, women can be considered mothers by virtue of having given birth, by raising their child(ren), supplying their ovum for fertilization, or some combination thereof. Such conditions provide a way of delineating the concept of motherhood, or the state of being a mother. Women who meet the third and first categories usually fall under the terms 'birth mother' or 'biological mother', regardless of whether the individual in question goes on to parent their child. Accordingly, a woman who meets only the second condition may be considered an adoptive mother, and those who meet only the third a surrogacy mother.
The above concepts defining the role of mother are neither exhaustive nor universal, as any definition of 'mother' may differ based on how social, cultural, and religious roles are defined. The parallel conditions and terms for males: those who are (typically biologically) fathers do not, by definition, take up the role of fatherhood. It should also be noted that mother and fatherhood are not limited to those who are or have parented. Women who are pregnant may be referred to as expectant mothers or mothers-to-be, though such applications tend to be less readily applied to (biological) fathers or adoptive parents.
Mother's Day is a modern celebration honoring one's mother, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May. It complements similar celebrations honoring family members, such as Father's Day and Siblings Day.
The celebration of Mother's Day began in the United States in the early 20th century; it is not related to the many celebrations of mothers and motherhood that have occurred throughout the world over thousands of years, such as the Greek cult to Cybele, the Roman festival of Hilaria, or the Christian Mothering Sunday celebration (originally a celebration of the mother church, not motherhood). Despite this, in some countries, Mother's Day has become synonymous with these older traditions.
The modern American holiday of Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, which now holds the International Mother's Day Shrine. Her campaign to make "Mother's Day" a recognized holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her beloved mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. Anna's mission was to honor her own mother by continuing work she started and to set aside a day to honor mothers, "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world". Anna's mother, Ann Jarvis, was a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues.

April 8, 2016 by BOB BOILEN While Kristine Leschper was singing her songs behind my desk, in the crowd was a tiny baby in a stroller. As I watched the child and the band, I couldn't help but think about both the promise and innocence of youth and the struggles of adulthood, as Leschper sang: We lived unloved in unmade beds You wore me like a necklace You closed me like a locket Mothers began as Leschper's project in art school in Athens, Ga. In their quiet moments — which at the Tiny Desk were all the moments — the songs seemed to function as a pursuit of catharsis, aided by fragile, tender melodies. The band helped hold the music together with grace and rhythm. Two of the songs here are from Mothers' debut album, When You Walk A Long Distance You Are Tired, which came out earlier thi...
“your cat is a friendly brother who would offer his heart with allegiance and if he could talk we’d be best friends the only friend he has is his food” - vashti bunyan, prospect hummer Casper has been missing since the 30th of December, but I still find his hair in my bedsheets. He was as sensitive as I was. When I walked to work in the morning, he would follow until we approached the highway, where I bullied him into turning around. He got into fights with the other cats, never could quite settle down. Last winter in a house without central heat I was doing everything I could to let the depression and anxiety finally win. Hardly more than a vague blur, this footage is the only remaining video I have of my best friend, who was so often the only thing keeping me rooted in reality, feedi...

Ellen celebrated Mother's Day with an audience full of women who were laughing for (at least) two.
Ever seen your mother as if she were a child? Ever seen your grown up daughter, as if she was still a bratty little miscreant? As two women effortlessly swap life-roles with each other in this film, we see them through each other's eyes; sometimes a projection, often a mirror. Infinitely complex, painfully simple and deeply beautiful, here's to the most amazing relationship in the world: 'Mothers and Daughters'. Because they may grow old together, but will never be too old for each other. This Mother's Day, Blush and Chhoti Productions joyously present, 'Chhoti', the first instalment of its short film series, 'Mothers & Daughters'. Mothers, don't believe their lies
Don't let them get their hands inside your mind
Open your eyes see through their lies or
they'll take your children and waste their young lives
In a tailor made grave, lost and forgotten in a land far away
And you'll feel no remorse because there are letters in your drawer
Reminding you of what he was fighting for
What was it again? Oh, yes, of course!
For his country. For God. For Democracy.
For his country, for god, for Democracy and the economy
You're allowed to cry but don't ever ask why
just remember there's no better reason to die
So don't read the books, don't watch TV
The fairy tale has got a grim reality
It's a very sad story, all guts no glory
who takes pride in a wasted life [2X]
