Seville derby

The Seville derby (Derbi sevillano) is the name of a local city derby located in Seville, Spain contested between Real Betis and Sevilla FC.

Sevilla FC were founded in 1905. This was followed two years later (September 1907) by the city's second club 'Sevilla Balompié'. Following an internal split from Sevilla FC another club was formed, Betis Football Club. 1914 saw the culmination of a merger between Betis Football Club and Sevilla Balompié. With the patronage title, the club became Real Betis Balompié. On 8 October 1915, the first Sevilla-Betis derby took place, ending with a 4–3 Sevilla victory. Sevilla play at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán in the Barrio de Nervión part of the city, while Betis are based in Heliópolis, to the south of the city at the Estadio Benito Villamarín.

Real Betis

Real Betis Balompié, SAD, more commonly referred to as Real Betis (pronounced: [reˈal ˈβetis]) or just Betis, is a Spanish football club based in Seville, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. Founded on 12 September 1907, it plays in La Liga, having won the Segunda División in the 2014–15 season. It holds home games at Estadio Benito Villamarín in the south of the city.

Among other titles, the club – which in 1932 became the first Andalusian team to play in La Liga – won the league title in 1935 and the Copa del Rey in 1977 and 2005.

Maintaining an historic city rivalry with Sevilla FC, its motto is Viva el Betis manque pierda! ("Long live Betis even when they lose!").

History

The name is derived from Baetis, the Roman name for the Guadalquivir river which passes through Seville. Betis initially attracted support from the working classes although a large number of aristocrats, including the King of Spain also supported the team. Real was added in 1914 after the club received patronage from King Alfonso XIII.

Seville (/səˈvɪl/; Spanish: Sevilla [seˈβiʎa], locally: [seˈβi(ɟ)ʝa]) is the capital and largest city of the autonomous community of Andalusia and the province of Seville, Spain. It is situated on the plain of the River Guadalquivir. The inhabitants of the city are known as sevillanos (feminine form: sevillanas) or hispalenses, after the Roman name of the city, Hispalis. Seville has a municipal population of about 703,000 as of 2011, and a metropolitan population of about 1.5 million, making it the fourth-largest city in Spain and the 30th most populous municipality in the European Union. Its Old Town, the third largest in Europe with an area of 4 square kilometres (2 sq mi), contains three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Alcázar palace complex, the Cathedral and the General Archive of the Indies. The Seville harbour, located about 80 kilometres (50 miles) from the Atlantic Ocean, is the only river port in Spain. Seville is also the hottest major metropolitan area in Europe, with summer average high temperatures of above 35 °C.

Sevilla FC

Sevilla Fútbol Club, S.A.D. (Spanish pronunciation: [seˈβiʎa ˈfuðβol ˈkluβ]), or simply Sevilla, is Spain’s oldest football club solely devoted to association football. Sevilla FC is based in Seville, capital and largest city of the autonomous community of Andalusia. Sevilla is one of the teams that play in Spain’s top flight, La Liga. The club was formed on 25 January 1890, with Scotsman Edward Farquharson Johnston being their first president. A few years later, on 14 October 1905, the club’s articles of association were registered in the Civil Government of Seville under the presidency of the Jerez-born José Luis Gallegos Arnosa.

Sevilla is also the most successful club in Andalusia, winning a national league title in 1945–46, five Spanish Cups (1935, 1939, 1948, 2007 and 2010), one Spanish Super Cup (2007), a record four UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cups (2006, 2007, 2014 and 2015) and the 2006 UEFA Super Cup. They were also designated by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics as the world's best club in 2006 and 2007, thus being the first club to achieve this distinction in two consecutive years. Sevilla's main rivalry is with their cross-city club Real Betis, whom they compete with in the Seville derby.

Derby

Derby (ⁱ/ˈdɑːrbi/ DAR-bi, locally /ˈdɑːrbɛ/ DAR-beh) is a city and unitary authority area in the East Midlands region of England. It lies on the banks of the River Derwent in the south of the county of Derbyshire, of which it is the county town. In the 2011 census, the city had a population of 248,700 and 1,543,000 in the wider metro area.

As home to Lombe's Mill, an early British factory, Derby is considered a birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. With the arrival of the railways in the 19th century, and because of its strategic central location, the city grew to become a centre of the British rail industry.

Today, Derby is an internationally renowned centre for advanced transport manufacturing, home to the world’s second largest aero-engine manufacturer, Rolls-Royce, and Derby Litchurch Lane Works—the UK's only remaining train manufacturer. The Toyota Manufacturing UK's automobile headquarters is south west of the city at Burnaston.

Origins

The Roman camp of 'Derventio' was probably at Little Chester/Chester Green (grid reference SK353375), the site of the old Roman fort. Later the town was one of the 'Five Boroughs' (fortified towns) of the Danelaw, until it was captured by Lady Aethelflaed of Mercia in July 917, subsequent to which the town was annexed into the Kingdom of Mercia.
