The Nullarbor Plain (/ˈnʌləbɔːr/ NUL-ə-bor; Latin: nullus, "no", and arbor, "tree") is part of the area of flat, almost treeless, arid or semi-arid country of southern Australia, located on the Great Australian Bight coast with the Great Victoria Desert to its north. It is the world's largest single exposure of limestone bedrock, and occupies an area of about 200,000 square kilometres (77,000 sq mi). At its widest point, it stretches about 1,100 kilometres (684 mi) from east to west across the border between South Australia and Western Australia.
Historically, the Nullarbor, considered by Europeans to be almost uninhabitable, was used by the semi-nomadic Aborigines, the Spinifex and Wangai peoples.
The first Europeans known to have sighted and mapped it were an expedition led by Pieter Nuyts in 1626–27. While the interior remained little known to Europeans over the next two centuries, the name Nuytsland was often applied to the area adjoining the Great Australian Bight. It survives as two geographical names in West Australia : Nuytsland Nature Reserve and Nuyts Land District.

FOOTAGE: SUPER 8 FILM & VHS - Although this film concentrates on a stretch of land called the Nullarbor Plain, it is essentially a narrative of my experiences travelling the Eyre Highway to Western Australia. Between 1973 and 1990 I have traversed the Nullarbor no less then eight times, each time with a different travelling companion. In the early seventies the road was dirt, I found it amazing that a major connecting road from the east to the west of a country the size of Australia, should have a road that was so badly maintained.
Travelling the Nullarbor by camper is a very popular self drive holiday in Australia. You won’t be disappointed crossing the Nullarbor, driving between Adelaide and Perth with fabulous scenery and contrasting landscapes. While crossing the Nullarbor Plain is a bucket list item for many, some may be surprised to see there is far more than a ‘treeless’ plain to this popular trip. On the Adelaide side of the crossing, you’ve got the beautiful Eyre Peninsular to explore, brimming with fresh seafood, friendly locals and idyllic beaches. There’s great opportunity for spotting wildlife, including the Southern Right Whales from the Bunda Cliffs as you head towards the Nullarbor – more on that soon. You’ll drive Australia’s longest straight road, and you’ll find the scenery is continually cha...

But underneath this flat wasteland is an intricate system of deep subterranean caves and underwater channels. The Nullarbor is consisted of the largest contiguous block of limestone in the world, and over the course of millions of years, water erosion has carved out this awe-inspiring labyrinth of caves. Not only is it amazing that such vast reserves of water lie underneath t...
