Juan Ponce de León (/ˈpɒns də ˈliən/Spanish pronunciation: [ˈxuan ˈponθe ðe leˈon]; 1474 – July 1521) was a Spanish explorer and conquistador. He became the first Governor of Puerto Rico by appointment of the Spanish crown. He led the first known European expedition to La Florida, which he named, and is associated with the legend of the Fountain of Youth, supposed to be in Florida.
Juan Ponce de León was born in the village of Santervás de Campos in the northern part of what is now the Spanish province of Valladolid. Although early historians placed his birth in 1460, and this date has been used traditionally, more recent evidence shows he was likely born in 1474. The surname Ponce de León dates from the 13th century. The Ponce de León lineage began with Ponce Vélaz de Cabrera, descendant of count Bermudo Núñez, and Sancha Ponce de Cabrera, daughter of Ponce Giraldo de Cabrera. Before October 1235, a son of Ponce Vela de Cabrera and his wife Teresa Rodríguez Girón named Pedro Ponce de Cabrera married Aldonza Alfonso, an illegitimate daughter of King Alfonso IX of León. The descendants of this marriage added the "de León" to their patronymic and were known henceforth as the Ponce de León.
Juan Ponce de León (1474–1521) was a Spanish explorer of the Americas and first Governor of Puerto Rico.
Juan is a given name, the Spanish language and Manx language version of John. It is very common in the Isle of Man and in Spain (its origin) and in Spanish-speaking communities around the world. The feminine form in Spanish is Juana, or Juanita on its diminutive.
Juan (Mandarin pronunciation: [tɕɥɛ̂n] or [tɕɥɛ́n]; 娟, 隽) "beautiful, graceful" is also commonly used as a given name for Chinese women. The Chinese character "卷", which is almost (being pronounced [tɕɥɛ̀n]) homophonic with the characters for the female name, is a division of a traditional Chinese manuscript or book and can be translated as "fascicle", "scroll", "chapter" or "volume".

Five hundred years ago, Juan Ponce de León landed on what he believed was another Caribbean Island. In honor of the Pascua Florida, or Easter Sunday, he named the “island” la Florida. In this fascinating talk, historian J. Michael Francis explores the legacy of Ponce’s voyages to the peninsula, exposing the many myths that dominate popular perceptions about the Spanish colonization of Florida. He’ll also examine the lives of the many forgotten protagonists in 16th-century Florida, as Europeans, Africans, and Indians forged a New World.
