Dascha Polanco

Dascha Polanco (born December 3, 1982) is a Dominican American actress, best known for playing the character Dayanara Diaz on Orange Is the New Black.

Early life

Polanco was born in the Dominican Republic and moved to the United States at a young age. She was raised in Brooklyn, New York and Miami by her father, a mechanic, and mother, a cosmetologist.

Career

Polanco aspired to be an actress from an early age but "always doubted auditioning because of [her] weight", so she completed a bachelor's degree in psychology at Hunter College. After college she began working in the healthcare industry with the intention of becoming a nurse. She was working as a hospital administrator at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, while studying nursing, when she gained courage to pursue acting again and registered herself into an acting studio. She attended BIH Studios in New York, which is where she was signed by the talent agency Shirley Grant Management. Her first acting credits were minor parts on the television series Unforgettable and NYC 22.

Turn on the Bright Lights

Turn On the Bright Lights is the debut studio album by the American rock band Interpol, released in August 2002. The album was recorded in November 2001 at Tarquin Studios in Connecticut, and was co-produced, mixed and engineered by Peter Katis and Gareth Jones. It was released on August 19, 2002 in the United Kingdom and August 20 in the United States, through independent record label Matador Records. Upon release, the record peaked at number 101 on the UK Albums Chart. It reached number 158 on the Billboard 200 in the United States, as well as spending 73 weeks in the Billboard Independent Albums, peaking at number five.

"PDA", "NYC", "Obstacle 1" and "Say Hello to the Angels" were the singles from Turn On the Bright Lights, and a video was shot for each with the exception of "Say Hello to the Angels".

The album was certified Gold by the RIAA on August 29, 2011 for shipments of 500,000 copies.

A remastered version of the album was released in 2012 to commemorate its tenth anniversary. It featured additional material including demo recordings of several tracks, the bonus songs previously available on international releases and a DVD of live performances and music videos.

The New Black

The New Black is the fifth and final album by Canadian heavy metal band Strapping Young Lad. It was released on July 11, 2006, debuting at No. 200 on the Billboard charts. A music video was shot for the album's sole single, "Wrong Side", and another video, done in CGI, was made for "Almost Again", which was not a single.

Background

Century Media imposed a strict deadline on the release date of the album; it was to be ready before the 2006 Ozzfest festival. Despite this, Townsend stated the recording was not rushed, and The New Black became a critical, as well as a commercial, success. It was more melodic than any of the band's previous albums and brought back the debut album's tongue-in-cheek humour.

Promotion and touring

A music video was shot in late May to accompany the sole single from the album, "Wrong Side". In June 2006 Strapping Young Lad embarked on a short festival tour of Europe, including performances at the Rock am Ring and Rock im Park festivals in Germany, and the Download Festival in England, which was followed by a second stage appearance at Ozzfest in July and August, where they played to some of the largest audiences in their career.

Polanco, Mexico City

Polanco is one of the most famous and most exclusive districts in Mexico City. The neighborhood is notable because of its cultural diversity and has been historically preferred by the descendants of Spanish, Ashkenazi Jewish, Lebanese, among others. Some of the wealthiest families in Mexico and Latin America have homes in Polanco, and a very long list of politicians, celebrities, artists and businessmen call the area home.

The neighborhood is also populated with expensive offices, restaurants, museums, luxurious stores and shopping malls. Its Avenida Presidente Masaryk is the highest-priced street and the one with the most upscale boutiques in Latin America. It is compared by some to Beverly Hills' Rodeo Drive or New York City's Fifth Avenue

The area is located in the Miguel Hidalgo borough of Mexico City, situated north of Chapultepec Park and consisting of five official neighborhoods ("colonias").

History

The colony takes its name from a river that crossed what is now the Avenue Champs Elysees, which in turn received it to honor the memory of the Spanish Jesuit Juan Alfonso de Polanco, who was secretary of Ignatius of Loyola and whose descendants of the Polanco family were members of the board of the Kings of Spain in the 18th century and came to Mexico as officers of the Crown.

Orange Is the New Black

Orange Is the New Black (often abbreviated to OITNB) is an American comedy-drama series created by Jenji Kohan. The series, produced by Tilted Productions in association with Lionsgate Television, is based on Piper Kerman's memoir, Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison (2010), about her experiences at FCI Danbury, a minimum-security federal prison. The first season, comprising 13 episodes, premiered on July 11, 2013 on Netflix. The second season, consisting of 13 episodes, was released on June 6, 2014. The third season, consisting of 13 episodes, premiered on June 11, 2015. On April 15, 2015, the series was renewed for a fourth season, to be released on June 17, 2016. On February 5, 2016, the series was renewed for a fifth, sixth and seventh season.

Orange Is the New Black is Netflix's most-watched series. It has received critical acclaim. For its first season, the series garnered 12 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, winning three. A new Emmy rule in 2015 forced the series to change categories from comedy to drama. For its second season, it received four Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, and Uzo Aduba won for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. The series is the first to score nominations in both comedy and drama categories. The series has also received six Golden Globe Award nominations, a Producers Guild of America Award, and a Peabody Award.
