The Channel Islands (Norman: Îles d'la Manche, French: Îles Anglo-Normandes or Îles de la Manche) are an archipelago in the English Channel, off the French coast of Normandy. They include two Crown dependencies, both of which are bailiwicks: the Bailiwick of Jersey and the Bailiwick of Guernsey. They are considered the remnants of the Duchy of Normandy, and although they are not part of the United Kingdom, it is responsible for the defence and international relations of the islands. They have a total population of about 168,000 and their respective capitals, Saint Helier and Saint Peter Port, have populations of 33,500 and 16,488, respectively. The total area of the islands is 198 km2.
Both Bailiwicks have been administered separately since the late 13th century; each has its own independent laws, elections, and representative bodies (although in modern times, politicians from the islands' legislatures are in regular contact). Any institution common to both is the exception rather than the rule.
Channel, channels, and similar terms may refer to:
An island /ˈaɪlənd/ or isle /ˈaɪl/ is any piece of sub-continental land that is surrounded by water. Very small islands such as emergent land features on atolls can be called islets, skerries, cays or keys. An island in a river or a lake island may be called an eyot or ait, or a holm. A grouping of geographically or geologically related islands is called an archipelago, e.g. the Philippines.
An island may be described as such despite the presence of an artificial land bridge, for example Singapore and its causeway, or the various Dutch delta islands, such as IJsselmonde. Some places may even retain "island" in their names for historical reasons after being connected to a larger landmass by a wide land bridge, such as Coney Island or Coronado Island. Conversely, when a piece of land is separated from the mainland by a man-made canal, for example the Peloponnese by the Corinth Canal, it is generally not considered an island.
There are two main types of islands: continental islands and oceanic islands. There are also artificial islands.
Santa Cruz (or Santacruz) may refer to:
Santa Cruz Island is the largest of the eight islands in the Channel Islands of California, located off the coast of California. The island, in the northern group of the Channel Islands, is 22 miles (35 km) long and from 2 to 6 miles (3.2 to 9.7 km) wide with an area of 61,764.6 acres (249.952 km2). Santa Cruz Island is located within Santa Barbara County, California. The coastline has steep cliffs, gigantic sea caves, coves, and sandy beaches. Defined by the United States Census Bureau as Block 3000, Block Group 3, Census Tract 29.10 of Santa Barbara County, the 2000 census showed an official population of two persons. The highest peak is Devils Peak, at 2450+ feet (747+ m). It was the largest privately owned island off the continental United States but is currently part-owned by the National Park Service (NPS owns 24%, and the Nature Conservancy owns 76%).
A central valley splits the island along the Santa Cruz Island Fault, with volcanic rock on the north and older sedimentary rock on the south. This volcanic rock was heavily fractured during the uplift phase that formed the island and over a hundred large sea caves have been carved into the resulting faults. One of these, Painted Cave, is among the world's largest.

Santa Rosa Island is the second largest of the Channel Islands of California and is located approximately 26 miles off the coast of Santa Barbara. Home to a widely diverse number of plant and animal species, some of which can only be found on the island, Santa Rosa Island has seen the comings and goings of Pygmy Mammoths, native Chumash indians, European explorers, sea otter hunters, Chinese abalone fishermen, Spanish Missionaries, Mexican and American ranchers and the US military. We explore parts of this scenic island such as Lobo Canyon, Cherry Canyon, Water Canyon Beach, and Torrey Pines Trails.

The Channel Islands were occupied by Nazi Germany for most of the Second World War. This documentary explores the plight of islanders during those bitter years. The film utilises footage shot by residents on 8mm and 16mm during the second world war, much of which was filmed in secret. This was the first Channel programme to be produced in colour.

We Remember the Occupation by the Nazis. This is a one hour audio documentary the about the German Occupation of the British Channel Islands during World War Two and a tribute to some of those people who endured it. Here is a record of their experiences during those years: a first hand account of life in the only British territory to be controlled by Nazi Germany. In 1990 Simon Watkins and Craig Le Marquand produced this one-hour audio documentary to mark the 45th anniversary of the Liberation of the Channel Islands from German forces. Over the years more and more people who lived through that dramatic time pass away and their memories and stories go with them. This programme therefore is permanent record of the most significant period in World, British and Channel Island history.
