Cave

A cave or cavern is a hollow place in the ground, especially a natural underground space large enough for a human to enter. Caves form naturally by the weathering of rock and often extend deep underground. The word cave can also refer to much smaller openings such as sea caves, rock shelters, and grottos.

Speleology is the science of exploration and study of all aspects of caves and the cave environment. Visiting or exploring caves for recreation may be called caving, potholing, or spelunking.

Types and formation

The formation and development of caves is known as speleogenesis. Caves are formed by various geologic processes and can be variable sizes. These may involve a combination of chemical processes, erosion from water, tectonic forces, microorganisms, pressure, and atmospheric influences.

It is estimated that the maximum depth of a cave cannot be more than 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) due to the pressure of overlying rocks. For karst caves the maximum depth is determined on the basis of the lower limit of karst forming processes, coinciding with the base of the soluble carbonate rocks.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are an Australian alternative rock band that was formed in Melbourne in 1983 by lead singer Nick Cave, multi-instrumentalist Mick Harvey and guitarist Blixa Bargeld. The band has featured international personnel throughout its career and presently consists of Cave, violinist and multi-instrumentalist Warren Ellis, bassist Martyn P. Casey and keyboardist Conway Savage (all four from Australia), keyboard/percussion player Barry Adamson and guitarist George Vjestica (both from the United Kingdom), and drummers Thomas Wydler (Switzerland) and Jim Sclavunos (United States). The band has released fifteen studio albums and completed numerous international tours.

The band was founded after the demise of Cave and Harvey's former group the Birthday Party, the members of which met at a boarding school in Victoria, Australia. Deviating from the noise rock roots of their contemporaries, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have produced alternative rock that has been influenced by various genres, such as punk rock, gothic rock, no wave and blues. Their early material—From Her to Eternity (1984), The Firstborn Is Dead (1985), Your Funeral... My Trial (1986) and Tender Prey (1988)—primarily featured a post-punk sound. The band has progressively incorporated other songwriting elements; for example, the 2008 release Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! experimented with garage rock, also an influence of the side project Grinderman. Synthesizers and minimal guitar work feature prominently on their newest album, Push the Sky Away (2013), recorded after the departure of Harvey in 2009.

Nick Cave

Nicholas Edward "Nick" Cave (born 22 September 1957) is an Australian musician, songwriter, author, screenwriter, composer and occasional film actor. He is best known as the frontman of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, established in 1983, a group known for its diverse output and ever-evolving line-up. Prior to this, he fronted the Birthday Party, one of the most extreme and confrontational post-punk bands of the early 1980s. In 2006, he formed the garage rock band Grinderman, releasing its debut album the following year.

Referred to as rock music's "Prince of Darkness", Cave's music is generally characterised by emotional intensity, a wide variety of influences, and lyrical obsessions with death, religion, love and violence.NME described him as "the grand lord of gothic lushness".

Cave has also worked as a composer for films, often in collaboration with fellow Australian musician Warren Ellis. Their films together include The Proposition (2005, based on a screenplay by Cave), The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007), The Road (2009) and Lawless (2012). Cave is the subject and co-writer of the semi-fictional "day in the life" documentary 20,000 Days on Earth (2014).

In 1642, Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer, became the first European to sight New Zealand. In 1840, representatives of the British Crown and Māori Chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, making New Zealand a British colony. Today, the majority of New Zealand's population of 4.5 million is of European descent; the indigenous Māori are the largest minority, followed by Asians and Pacific Islanders. Reflecting this, New Zealand's culture is mainly derived from Māori and early British settlers, with recent broadening arising from increased immigration. The official languages are English, Māori and New Zealand Sign Language, with English predominant.

The Reed Flute Cave – Guangxi, China This cave is quite the landmark and a major tourist attraction that can be found on the outskirt of the city of Guilin in Guangxi, China. The cave gets its name from the reeds that grow inside it and are perfect for turning them into reeds. Not only that, but you can also find a variety of mineral formations, carbon deposits and stone pillars. The cave was rediscovered back in the 1940s by refugees and is around 180 years old with roughly 70 inscriptions on the walls that go as far back as 792 AD. 8. The Blue Grotto – Capri, Italy This famous sea cave can be found right on the coast of the island of Capri in Italy where it extends for 177 feet. The sun’s light is able to pass through the underwater cavity and illuminates the ocean’s waters, producing a reflection that makes the cave glow blue. With only one entrance, this cave can only be reached by boat and the passengers must lie flat as the oarsman uses a metal chain to pull the boat into the cave. Visitors are also forbidden to swim in the grotto in order to preserve the clarity of the water. 7. The Lascaux Caves – Montignac, France This cave is found in the southwestern region of France, where it is more known for the Paleolithic cave paintings that are found inside, which a teenager happened to stumble across them back in the 1940s. The cave art is dated at being around 17,300 years old and is made up of pictures of large animals that once existed during that time period. The caves were opened in 1948 and were made into a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 1979. 6. The Cave of Crystals – Chihuahua, Mexico This cave that can be found in Chihuahua, Mexico was just barely discovered back in 2000 when scientists found the chasm below after they had drilled an aquifer and managed to pump out thousands of gallons of water. The crystal formations mind numbingly huge as they are measured at being way over 30 feet with a diameter of 4 feet. This is because the water that they formed in was overflowing with calcium sulfate and the cave was being heated by magma. The cave is so hot that most people can only stay inside for around ten minutes with the proper protective gear. 5. The Glowworm Cave – Waitomo, New Zealand This cave at Waitomo is located on the north island of New Zealand and as the name suggests it’s popularly known for the population of glowworms that have made this place their home. This cave happens to be a part of the Waitomo Cave system along with two other caves known as the Aranui and the Ruakuri Cave. The glowworm phenomenon is only unique to New Zealand which is why plenty of tourists pass through here each year. 4. The Eiskogelhöhle Cave Depicted in the picture below is what’s known as the “Halle de Circe” or as it's translated to “Hall of Circle”. The ice pillars can be found in the Eiskogelhöhle in Salzburg, Austria. The cave was first discovered back in 1877 Eduard Richter. Shropshire Caves There’s always something quite mysterious when it comes to exploring a cave. It’s usually dark and you might not always know where it might lead. And sometimes, it’s also the meeting place for secret societies such as the Knights Templar. Also known as the Caynton Caves, this cave system in the United Kingdom as a place for Druids to continue practicing their faith without being persecuted. Later on it became the meeting grounds for the Knights Templar who were the leading group of knights during the crusades. They were disbanded in the 1300’s but before then, they played a key role in politics all over Europe. However they were deeply in debt and King Philip of France was looking for them. Did the Knights templar continue pulling strings inside these mysterious caves? Rumors tell tales of them keeping their own prisoners here. It’s here you’ll find a series of caves and hindu temples throughout and the shrines here have become popular among followers of this religion outside of india but also tourists looking to learn more about this place. The limestone caves found in this area are roughly 400 million years old and they’ve been used by local indigenous people for shelter. Outside the opening of this cave you’ll find the world’s tallest statue of the hindu deity, known as Murugan which is coated with golden paint from thailand. This mysterious cave hosts a wide variety of wildlife and it’s common to see macaque monkeys near the shrines. Some legends tell tales of demons once inhabiting these cav es who were defeated by the character depicted in the golden statue. . 9. Grotte de Massabielle 8. Vortex Spring Cave If you see this sign with the grim reaper you probably don’t want to explore any further and you might feel that this is a mysterious cave. Located in Florida, this innocent looking pond is actually just the surface to one of the most mysterious caves in the world. Some have entered and never came back. Such was the case of Ben McDaniel, a scuba diver who went missing in 2010 who frequently visited this cave. Extensive searching took place for ben in this cave but he was never found, despite being an experienced diver. Wind Caves South Dakota Although this cave was fairly well-known to native americans, it was discovered by western explorers in the late 1880’s and the wind blowing through here was strong enough to blow off the hats from their heads. They came back to the caves later on and noticed that the wind seems to switch directions. The grimey look to it when the cave is lit up seem to give off a mysterious vibe to this place and you’ll notice many unique rock formations within. The cave was explored for valuable minerals and gold but nothing was ever discovered, keeping the cave in its original condition. The creatures that don’t normally rely on sunlight can get down terrifying. But other creatures still eat them anyway. This cave is home home snakes, that feast on the thriving bats that live here and will snatch the bats when they least expect it. The bats seemingly provide the snakes with a never ending source of food. The serpent's tend to dangle from the cave and hide in tiny little crevices.
