Banksy is an English-based graffiti artist, political activist and film director whose real identity is unknown. His satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humour with graffiti executed in a distinctive stenciling technique. His works of political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world. Banksy's work grew out of the Bristol underground scene, which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. Observers have noted that his style is similar to Blek le Rat, who began to work with stencils in 1981 in Paris. Banksy says that he was inspired by "3D", a graffiti artist who later became a founding member of Massive Attack, an English musical group.
Banksy displays his art on publicly visible surfaces such as walls and self-built physical prop pieces. Banksy does not sell photographs or reproductions of his street graffiti, but art auctioneers have been known to attempt to sell his street art on location and leave the problem of its removal in the hands of the winning bidder. Banksy's first film, Exit Through the Gift Shop, billed as "the world's first street art disaster movie", made its debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. The film was released in the UK on 5 March 2010. In January 2011, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary for the film. In 2014, he was awarded Person of the Year at the 2014 Webby Awards.
New York is a state in the Northeastern United States and is the United States' 27th-most extensive, fourth-most populous, and seventh-most densely populated state. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border in the Atlantic Ocean with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west and north. The state of New York, with an estimated 19.8 million residents in 2015, is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, the state's most populous city and its economic hub.
With an estimated population of nearly 8.5 million in 2014, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York City Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. New York City is a global city, exerting a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York City is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world, as well as the world's most economically powerful city. New York City makes up over 40% of the population of New York State. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and nearly 40% live on Long Island. Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.
Street art is visual art created in public locations, usually unsanctioned artwork executed outside of the context of traditional art venues. The term gained popularity during the graffiti art boom of the early 1980s and continues to be applied to subsequent incarnations. Stencil graffiti, wheatpasted poster art or sticker art, and street installation or sculpture are common forms of modern street art. Video projection, yarn bombing and Lock On sculpture became popularized at the turn of the 21st century.
The terms "urban art", "guerrilla art", "post-graffiti" and "neo-graffiti" are also sometimes used when referring to artwork created in these contexts. Traditional spray-painted graffiti artwork itself is often included in this category, excluding territorial graffiti or pure vandalism.
Street art is often motivated by a preference on the part of the artist to communicate directly with the public at large, free from perceived confines of the formal art world. Street artists sometimes present socially relevant content infused with esthetic value, to attract attention to a cause or as a form of "art provocation".
Art is a diverse range of human activities in creating visual, auditory or performing artifacts – artworks, expressing the author's imaginative or technical skill, intended to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power. In their most general form these activities include the production of works of art, the criticism of art, the study of the history of art, and the aesthetic dissemination of art.
The oldest form of art are visual arts, which include creation of images or objects in fields including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and other visual media. Architecture is often included as one of the visual arts; however, like the decorative arts, it involves the creation of objects where the practical considerations of use are essential—in a way that they usually are not in a painting, for example. Music, theatre, film, dance, and other performing arts, as well as literature and other media such as interactive media, are included in a broader definition of art or the arts. Until the 17th century, art referred to any skill or mastery and was not differentiated from crafts or sciences. In modern usage after the 17th century, where aesthetic considerations are paramount, the fine arts are separated and distinguished from acquired skills in general, such as the decorative or applied arts.

The piece was immediately frowned upon because people felt it mocked the ancient ruins. According to the Guardian, Banksy had this to say about the art installation, “a lot of monuments are a bit rubbish, but this really is a pile of crap.” Banksy's “toilet-henge” was later tagged and vandalized by visitors. A small-scale re-creation of this work appeared a few years later during an exhibition at the Bristol Museum. 9 Cardi...

A video tour of Banksy vs Bristol Museum Show, featuring its infamous sculptures, stencils and animatronics. 13 June - 31 August 2009 Bristol City Museum
Website: http://www.banksyfilm.com This is the inside story of Street Art - a brutal and revealing account of what happens when fame, money and vandalism collide. Exit Through the Gift Shop follows an eccentric shop-keeper turned amateur film-maker as he attempts to capture many of the world's most infamous vandals on camera, only to have a British stencil artist named Banksy turn the camcorder back on its owner with wildly unexpected results. One of the most provocative films about art ever made, Exit Through the Gift Shop is a fascinating study of low-level criminality, comradeship and incompetence. By turns shocking, hilarious and absurd, this is an enthralling modern-day fairytale... with bolt cutters.
Only three people bought the famed street artist's original pieces for cheap.

Scientists are claiming that famed street artist Banksy is really Robin Gunningham thanks to “Geographic profiling” - a technique often used to catch serial criminals. This technique relies on the assumption that crime happens closest to where a person lives. Scientists at Queen Mary University of London believe they have identified a pattern between the locations where Banksy’s artwork has appeared and addresses with a close association to Gunningham. The scientist selected 140 suspected works by Banksy with suggest “hot spots” in order to pinpoint the artist. Kanika Lal and Mark Sovel examine the research further on the Lip News. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/banksy-geographic-profiling-proves-artist-really-is-robin-gunningham-according-to-scientists-a6909896.html Newest Lip...

As a Photographer and assistant to a signed artist for the Opera Gallery, I'd happened to visit to see how Mr Brainwash was getting on preparing the gallery for his solo exhibition. Whilst I was there, some friends of mine from Saatchi&Saatchi; were interviewing Thierry for TOPMAN Generations, so I thought I'd help out. Due to the main camera running out of juice, I'd left mine running towards the end of the interview, where Thierry said one of the most beautiful and poignant things. Contrary to popular belief about the somewhat controversial divide between him and Banksy (also an Opera Gallery artist), I felt his words are so true to many people out there, and definitely the backbone to a lot of my own work. Filmed at the London Opera Gallery, Bond Street. View the official interview here...
UK based artist EINE spent the month canvasing San Francisco with his stylized lettering. Utilizing the urban landscape of 'the City', EINE has impressed with the shear scale of his work. Offering San Franciscan's simple phrases or words such as "happiness" - his work lets you draw from your own bank of mental imagery. This public execution of street art aimed to offer viewers a more participatory role in the observation and evaluation of artistic creation.
