The Mojave Desert (pronunciation: /moʊˈhɑːvi, mə-/mo-HAH-vee) is a rain-shadow, mostly high desert area, that occupies a significant portion of southeastern California and smaller parts of central California, southern Nevada, southwestern Utah and northwestern Arizona in the United States. The Mojave Desert's boundaries are generally defined by the presence of Yucca brevifolia (Joshua trees), considered an indicator species for this desert. It is the driest of the North American deserts. The desert is believed to support between 1,750 and 2,000 species of plants.
It is roughly rectangular in shape, bounded by the Great Basin Desert to the north, and the Sonoran Desert to the south and east. The topographical boundaries include the Tehachapi Mountains to the west, and the San Gabriel Mountains and San Bernardino Mountains to the south. The mountain boundaries are quite distinct since they are outlined by the two largest faults in California, the San Andreas and Garlock faults. The Mojave Desert displays typical basin and range topography. Higher elevations above 2,000 feet (610 m) in the Mojave are commonly referred to as the High Desert; however, Death Valley is the lowest elevation in North America at 282 feet (86 m) below sea level and is one of the Mojave Desert's more notorious places. It occupies less than 50,000 square miles, making it the smallest of the North American deserts.
Mojave or Mohave most often refers to:
Mojave or Mohave may also refer to:
National Geographic or NatGeo may refer to:
A desert is a barren area of land where little precipitation occurs and consequently living conditions are hostile for plant and animal life. The lack of vegetation exposes the unprotected surface of the ground to the processes of denudation. About one third of the land surface of the world is arid or semi-arid. This includes much of the polar regions where little precipitation occurs and which are sometimes called polar deserts or "cold deserts". Deserts can be classified by the amount of precipitation that falls, by the temperature that prevails, by the causes of desertification or by their geographical location.
Deserts are formed by weathering processes as large variations in temperature between day and night put strains on the rocks which consequently break in pieces. Although rain seldom occurs in deserts, there are occasional downpours that can result in flash floods. Rain falling on hot rocks can cause them to shatter and the resulting fragments and rubble strewn over the desert floor is further eroded by the wind. This picks up particles of sand and dust and wafts them aloft in sand or dust storms. Wind-blown sand grains striking any solid object in their path can abrade the surface. Rocks are smoothed down, and the wind sorts sand into uniform deposits. The grains end up as level sheets of sand or are piled high in billowing sand dunes. Other deserts are flat, stony plains where all the fine material has been blown away and the surface consists of a mosaic of smooth stones. These areas are known as desert pavements and little further erosion takes place. Other desert features include rock outcrops, exposed bedrock and clays once deposited by flowing water. Temporary lakes may form and salt pans may be left when waters evaporate. There may be underground sources of water in the form of springs and seepages from aquifers. Where these are found, oases can occur.

Desert beauty, ghost towns and trains. I especially like how the old cabin scenes near the end look. The wood textures, combined with light and shadows, add a lot to the mood of the area there. We camped there overnight in the late summer. Between trains, it's really quiet - other than the wind, the coyotes and other critters walking around in the shadows.

California travel expert Veronica Hill shares a guide to Calico Ghost Town in this episode of "California Travel Tips." Located in the dusty Mojave Desert — roughly 10 miles north of Barstow — Calico was named for the rainbow-colored hills that produced one of the richest silver strikes in California history. Home to 1,200 residents by 1887, this was a wild and woolly place — with 22 saloons, its own red light district and several fine restaurants. Today, Calico has five surviving original buildings: the Park Office, Lane's General Store, Lil's Saloon, and The Zenda Mining Company. Plan on a full day to explore. You can do a bit of gold panning; walk sideways in the Mystery Shack; take a ride on the Calico & Odessa Narrow Gauge Railway; or explore more than 1,000 feet of tunnel inside ...

It contains 35 billion cubic metres of water and was created as a result of a massive construction that was built on the Colorado River: the Hoover Dam.At a length of 177 kilometres, the idyllic Lake Mead is an essential water supply for the hot desert regions of both Nevada and Arizona. The Hoover Dam, which rises majestically above the Black Canyon, extends for more than 380 metres and generates the electricity that supplies the glittering world of Las Vegas’s Casinos in addition to various parts of Southern California.
