However, once the child refused and explained what was inside his bag, the school immediately suspended the young boy and added “terrorist threats” to his permanent record.Thanks to the left’s push for political correctness, simply saying the wrong thing can forever change one’s life. Because liberals are perpetuating the idea that words are weapons, even the most staunch free-speech advocate can find themselves carefully monitoring their language for fear of a political, physical, or legal backlash. Unfortunately, this verbal stranglehold has become so restrictive that even kindergarten children aren’t safe from liberal wrath. When 5-year-old Jackson Riley arrived at Great Valley Charter School in Modesto, California, on August 31, his teacher noticed that he was still wearing his backpack after class had commenced. After requesting that he put away his Super Mario bag, the imaginative boy explained that he couldn’t because there was a bomb inside that would explode if he removed it from his arms. It was this simple game of obvious make-believe that led to young Jackson being treated like a potential jihadist. KFOR reports that despite the fact that the teacher found nothing in his backpack, Jackson was sent to the principal’s office where he was suspended for a day for making “terrorist threats.” Jackson’s parents, Ian and Michelle, were shocked and outraged when a school official called and told them to come pick up their son for a 1-day suspension for allegedly endangering the lives of the other children. “So, they look in his backpack, and my son’s 5 years old; obviously there’s no bomb in my kid’s backpack,” Jackson’s father said. “They called me at work and said, ‘There’s been an incident at the school.’ They told me everything that my son said, and they said, ‘You need to come pick your son up, and this is going to be a one-day suspension.’”Although there was never any real threat, school administrators claimed that the 5-year-old was suspended because he “intentionally engaged in harassment, threats, or intimidation.” It was then that Jackson’s parents discovered that the school’s “terrorist threats” policy only applies to students in the 4th through 12th grades. Still, officials maintained that while the description shouldn’t have been added to his record, the suspension would remain on it. “He said he couldn’t take his backpack off because it would explode, meaning he doesn’t want anybody to get hurt, so I mean, granted, it’s all in the world of pretend-play, and we’re talking about an imaginary bomb. But where was the threat? We still haven’t really received a clear answer to that,” Jackson’s mother said. “He was sent home, and he understands you can’t say ‘bomb’ at school. But he really doesn’t understand what the threat is.” In an interview with KTXL, Ian explained that instead of correcting their error, they upgraded his son’s punishment to that of someone who had the intent to harm other students. “They said, ‘Well, hey you’re right, it doesn’t fit, so here’s what we’ve done for you. We’ve taken that code back, and we went ahead and gave him terrorist threats,” Ian said. “It was like, ‘We super-sized this for you at no extra charge.’” Understandably, Jackson’s parents want the suspension removed from his permanent record. However, the school doesn’t seem to want to budge on their decision. “He’s 5. He has an imagination. We just want what’s right is right, and what’s right in this instance is for our child to not have a permanent mark on his record because of this,” Jackson’s father said. The media reached out to school officials only to receive a generic statement that completely dodged all questions. They explained that they could not discuss Jackson’s case and that they take “student safety and discipline very seriously.” Of course, Jackson’s parents have already been very open about their son’s case, proving that the school simply wants to avoid a scandal. Unfortunately, Jackson’s parents are left-leaning Californians as well. Still, even they find it difficult and invasive to live under the liberal policies that plague their state. Sadly, it’s their children who will reap the rotten harvest of their parents’ liberal support.
