The Great Hunger was a genocide in Ireland which started in 1845, lasted, depending on the region, until 1849 or even 1852 and which led to the death of approximately one million people through starvation and disease; a further million are thought to have emigrated as a result of the famine. Some scholars estimate that the population of Ireland was reduced by 20 to 25 percent. It is not known how many people died during the period of the Famine, although it is believed more died from diseases than from starvation. State registration of births, marriages or deaths had not yet begun, and records kept by the Roman Catholic Church are incomplete. Eye witness accounts have helped medical historians identify both the ailments and effects of famine, and have been used to evaluate and explain in greater detail features of the famine. In Mayo, English Quaker William Bennett wrote of " three children huddled together, lying there because they were too weak to rise, pale and ghastly, their little limbs ... perfectly emaciated, eyes sunk, voice gone, and evidently in the last stages of actual starvation." Revd Dr Traill Hall, a Church of Ireland rector in Schull, described " the aged, who, with the young are almost without exception swollen and ripening for the grave." Marasmic children also left a permanent image on Quaker Joseph Crosfield who in 1846 witnessed a " heartrending scene [of] poor wretches in the last stages of famine imploring to be received into the [work]house...Some of the children were worn to skeletons, their features sharpened with hunger, and their limbs wasted almost to the bone... " William Forster wrote in Carrick-on-Shannon that " the children exhibit the effects of famine in a remarkable degree, their faces looking wan and haggard with hunger, and seeming like old men and women."

Also, because they are mechanical instead of electronic they provide healthy exercise for the arm they are used on.

Joseph Schull
Joseph Schull (6 February 1906 – 19 May 1980) was a Canadian playwright and historian who wrote more than two dozen books and 200 plays for radio and television.
Born in Watertown, South Dakota, he moved to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in 1913. He studied at the University of Saskatchewan and Queen's University. In the 1930s, he worked in advertising. During World War II, he was an Intelligence and Information Officer with the Royal Canadian Navy. After the war, he focused on his writing.

Andreas Scholl
Andreas Scholl (born 10 November 1967) is a German countertenor, a male classical singer in the alto vocal range, specialising in Baroque music.
Born into a family of singers, Scholl was enrolled at the age of seven into the boys choir. Aged 13, he was chosen from 20,000 choristers gathered in Rome from around the world to sing solo at a Mass held on 4 January 1981. Just four years later, Scholl was offered a place at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, an institution that normally accepts only post-graduate students, based on the strength and quality of his voice. He has since become an instructor at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, succeeding his own teacher, Richard Levitt.
Scholl's early operatic roles include his standing in for René Jacobs in 1993 at the Théâtre Grévin in Paris, where he caused a sensation. His major roles, such as his debut at Glyndebourne in 1998 as Bertarido in Handel's Rodelinda, a role he reprised at the Metropolitan Opera in 2006, were written for the 18th-century alto castrato Senesino.

Schull
Schull or Skull (/ˈskʌl/ SKUL; Irish: Scoil Mhuire or An Scoil) is a town in County Cork, Ireland. The name derives from a medieval monastic school, of which no trace remains.
Located on the southwest coast, in West Cork, the village is situated in a scenic and remote location, dominated by Mount Gabriel (407 m). It has a sheltered harbour, used for recreational boating. The area, on the peninsula leading to Mizen Head, is popular with tourists, and there are numerous holiday homes along the adjoining coast. The village had a population of 693 in 2002. The town's secondary school has a planetarium and a sailing school. Each year Schull harbour hosts the Fastnet International Schools Regatta.
Transport
Schull once had its own railway station. The village was the western terminus of the Schull and Skibbereen Railway, a steam-operated narrow gauge railway; it was closed by CIÉ in 1947. Schull railway station opened on 6 September 1886, closed for passenger and goods traffic on 27 January 1947, and finally closed altogether on 1 June 1953.

"Ombra mai fu" is the opening aria from the 1738 opera Serse by George Frideric Handel.
Context
The opera was a commercial failure, lasting only five performances in London after its premiere. In the 19th century, however, the aria was rediscovered and became one of Handel's best-known pieces. Handel adapted the aria from the setting by Bononcini who, in turn, adapted it from the setting by Francesco Cavalli. All three composers had produced settings of the same opera libretto by Nicolò Minato.
Music
Originally composed to be sung by a soprano castrato (and sung in modern performances of Serse by a countertenor, contralto or a mezzo-soprano), it has often been arranged for other voice types and instruments, including solo organ, solo piano, violin and piano, and string ensembles, often under the title "Largo from Xerxes", although the original tempo is marked larghetto.
In the opera, the aria is preceded by a short recitativo accompagnato of nine bars, setting the scene ("Frondi tenere e belle"). The aria itself is also short; it consists of 52 bars and typically lasts 3 to 4 minutes.

In Mayo, English Quaker William Bennett wrote of " three children huddled together, lying there because they were too weak to rise, pale and ghastly, their little limbs ... perfectly emaciated, eyes sunk, voice gone, and evidently in the last stages of actual starvation." Revd Dr Traill Hall, a Church of Ireland rector in Schull, described " the aged, who, with the young are almost without exception swollen and ripening for the grave." Marasmic children also left a permanent image on Quaker Joseph Crosfield who in 1846 witnessed a " heartrending scene [of] poor wretches in the last stages of famine imploring to be received into the [work]house...Some of the children were worn to skeletons, their features sharpened with hunger, and their limbs wasted almost to the bone... " William Forster wrote in Carrick-on-Shannon that " the children exhibit the effects of famine in a remarkable degree, their faces looking wan and haggard with hunger, and seeming like old men and women."

The Great Hunger was a genocide in Ireland which started in 1845, lasted, depending on the region, until 1849 or even 1852 and which led to the death of approximately one million people through starvation and disease; a further million are thought to have emigrated as a result of the famine. Some scholars estimate that the population of Ireland was reduced by 20 to 25 percent. It is not known how many people died during the period of the Famine, although it is believed more died from diseases than from starvation. State registration of births, marriages or deaths had not yet begun, and records kept by the Roman Catholic Church are incomplete. Eye witness accounts have helped medical historians identify both the ailments and effects of famine, and have been used to evaluate and explain in greater detail features of the famine. In Mayo, English Quaker William Bennett wrote of " three children huddled together, lying there because they were too weak to rise, pale and ghastly, their little limbs ... perfectly emaciated, eyes sunk, voice gone, and evidently in the last stages of actual starvation." Revd Dr Traill Hall, a Church of Ireland rector in Schull, described " the aged, who, with the young are almost without exception swollen and ripening for the grave." Marasmic children also left a permanent image on Quaker Joseph Crosfield who in 1846 witnessed a " heartrending scene [of] poor wretches in the last stages of famine imploring to be received into the [work]house...Some of the children were worn to skeletons, their features sharpened with hunger, and their limbs wasted almost to the bone... " William Forster wrote in Carrick-on-Shannon that " the children exhibit the effects of famine in a remarkable degree, their faces looking wan and haggard with hunger, and seeming like old men and women."
