Shakespeare goes to the movies at the Old Globe

The Bard hits the big screen at the Old Globe again, as the Balboa Park theater presents free Monday night showings of Shakespeare-minded movies.

The film series runs in tandem with the Globe’s summer Shakespeare Festival, which this year takes in the now-running “Richard II” (closing this Saturday), and “Hamlet” (running Aug. 6 to Sept. 10).

Here are the movies headed your way:

  • Director Peter Brook’s groundbreaking take on “King Lear, 7 p.m. this Monday (July 17) on the indoors Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage.
  • Al Pacino in the “Richard III”-minded documentary “Looking for Richard,” 7 p.m. Aug. 7, Shiley stage.
  • Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in Baz Luhrmann’s modernized “Romeo + Juliet,” 8 p.m. Aug. 28 in the outdoors Lowell Davies Festival Theatre.

Seating is first-come; first-served; the line starts one hour before show time.
