HMV Retail Ltd, formerly HMV Group plc, is a British entertainment retailing company operating in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It was listed on the London Stock Exchange and was a constituent of the FTSE Fledgling Index. The first HMV-branded store was opened by the Gramophone Company on Oxford Street in 1921, and the HMV name was also used for television and radio sets manufactured from the 1930s onwards. The retail side of the business began to expand in the 1960s, and in 1998 was divested from EMI, the successor to the Gramophone Company, to form what would become HMV Group.
HMV stands for His Master's Voice, the title of a painting by Francis Barraud of the dog Nipper listening to a cylinder phonograph, which was bought by the Gramophone Company in 1899. For advertising purposes this was changed to a wind-up gramophone, and eventually used simply as a silhouette.
HMV owned the Waterstone's bookshop chain from 1998 until 2011, and has owned the music retailer Fopp since August 2007. It purchased a number of former Zavvi stores in February 2009, and also branched into live music venue management that year by purchasing MAMA Group. It sold the group in December 2012.
"Holding Out for a Hero" is a song recorded by Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler for the soundtrack to the 1984 film Footloose, and later included on her 1986 album Secret Dreams and Forbidden Fire. It was written by Jim Steinman and Dean Pitchford. Initially, the song only just reached the Top 100 in the UK Singles Chart, but made it to number 2 the following year, and re-entered the charts again at number 69 in 1991. The song reached No. 1 on the Irish Singles Chart on 28 September 1985. It reached the top 40 in the United States.
The song's instrumental break was reused from an earlier song by Jim Steinman called "Stark Raving Love", which featured on Steinman's 1981 album Bad for Good.
Jim Steinman had been recruited to work on the Footloose soundtrack, for which he wrote "Holding Out for a Hero" with Dean Pitchford. Steinman suggested Tyler's name when he was approached about finding a singer to record the song. Tyler recorded the song at the Paramount Studios, and was shown the scene of the film where the song would feature.

What can you say about films over 60 years old that still have the ability to captivate, excite and delight? If you are the UK’s biggest music and DVD retailer HMV, you combine them into five great collections that celebrate all that is great about each decade. Bolder Creatives task was to visualise and create a 60 second cinema commercial that pays homage to some of the worlds most classic movies. Selecting one film from each decade, Bolder Creative designed a classic stopwatch environment as the intro section, evoking the feeling of timeless classic films. Commencing with the quintessential old-fashioned comedy from 1959, Some Like It Hot, you are taken on a journey through time, visiting some of Hollywood greats such as West Side Story and Gladiator, each scene beautifully restored an...
Earlier this year HMV announced that 2016 will see the largest sales in vinyl since 1997 with over 1.5 million LPs forecast to be sold across stores as well as online at store.hmv.com. We were thrilled to partner with HMV once again on another broadcast commercial highlighting the brands deep association with the vinyl format. For ‘the home of vinyl since 1921’ we created an ad which was built from a combination of live action footage and CGI elements. The live footage was shot at the Vinyl Factory in London, showing key elements of the pressing & manufacturing process. Alongside this we created bespoke 3D animations to highlight the formats unique form and beauty and further explain the manufacturing process that is hidden within the machines.
