Dominique

"Dominique" is a 1963 French language popular song, written and performed by Jeannine Deckers of Belgium, better known as Sœur Sourire or The Singing Nun. "Dominique" is about Saint Dominic, a Spanish-born priest and founder of the Dominican Order, of which she was a member (as Sister Luc-Gabrielle). The English-version lyrics of the song were written by Noël Regney. In addition to French and English, Deckers recorded versions in Dutch, German, Hebrew, Japanese, and Portuguese.

"Dominique" reached the Top 10 in 11 countries in late 1963 and early 1964, topping the chart in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It reached the Top 5 in Norway, Denmark, Ireland and South Africa, with the song making it into the lower reaches of the Top 10 in the Netherlands, West Germany, and the United Kingdom. The song reached and stayed at No. 1 on WLS for the last three weeks of November, then both the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and "easy listening chart" (since renamed the Adult Contemporary chart) for the four weeks in December of 1963. It was the second foreign language song to hit #1 on the Hot 100 in 1963, the first being "Sukiyaki" by Kyu Sakamoto. For the next ten years or so, although there were a number of hits with most of the vocals in a language other than English (e.g., The Sandpipers' "Guantanamera", Rene y Rene's "Lo Mucho Que Te Quiero", etc.), no other purely foreign language song reached the Billboard Hot 100's top 40 until the Spanish language hit "Eres tú (Touch The Wind)", which entered the top 40 on 16 February 1974 and peaked at No. 9 on 23–30 March 1974.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet

Jean-Pierre Jeunet (French: [ʒɑ̃ pjɛʁ ʒœnɛ]; born 3 September 1953) is a French film director and screenwriter known for the films Delicatessen, The City of Lost Children, Alien: Resurrection and Amélie.

Life and career

Jean-Pierre Jeunet was born in Roanne, Loire, France. He bought his first camera at the age of 17 and made short films while studying animation at Cinémation Studios. He befriended Marc Caro, a designer and comic book artist who became his longtime collaborator and co-director.

Together, Jeunet and Caro directed award-winning animations. Their first live action film was The Bunker of the Last Gunshots (1981), a short film about soldiers in a bleak futuristic world. Jeunet also directed numerous advertisements and music videos, such as Jean Michel Jarre's Zoolook (together with Caro).

Jeunet and Caro's first feature film was Delicatessen (1991), a melancholy comedy set in a famine-plagued post-apocalyptic world, in which an apartment building above a delicatessen is ruled by a butcher who kills people in order to feed his tenants.

A Very Long Engagement

A Very Long Engagement (French: Un long dimanche de fiançailles) is a 2004 French romantic war film, co-written and directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and starring Audrey Tautou. It is a fictional tale about a young woman's desperate search for her fiancé who might have been killed during World War I. It was based on a novel of the same name, written by Sebastien Japrisot, first published in 1991.

The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Art Direction and the Academy Award for Best Cinematography at the Oscars. Marion Cotillard won the César Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance.

Plot

Five French soldiers are convicted of self-mutilation in order to escape military service during World War I. They are condemned to face near certain death in the no man's land between the French and German trench lines. It appears that all of them were killed in a subsequent battle, but Mathilde, the fiancée of one of the soldiers, refuses to give up hope and begins to uncover clues as to what actually took place on the battlefield. She is all the while driven by the constant reminder of what her fiancé had carved into one of the bells of the church near their home, MMM for Manech Aime Mathilde (Manech Loves Mathilde; a pun on the French word aime, which is pronounced like the letter "M". In the English-language version, this is changed to "Manech's Marrying Mathilde").

Audrey Tautou

Audrey Justine Tautou (French: [o.dʁɛ to.tu]; born 9 August 1976) is a French actress and model. Signed by an agent at age 17, she made her acting debut at 18 on television and her feature film debut the following year in Venus Beauty Institute (1999), for which she received critical acclaim and won the César Award for Most Promising Actress. Her subsequent roles in the 1990s and 2000s included Le Libertin and Happenstance (2000).

Tautou achieved international recognition for her lead role in the 2001 film Amélie, which met with critical acclaim and was a major box-office success. Amélie won Best Film at the European Film Awards, four César Awards (including Best Film and Best Director), two BAFTA Awards (including Best Original Screenplay), and was nominated for five Academy Awards.

Tautou has since appeared in films in a range of genres, including the thrillers Dirty Pretty Things and The Da Vinci Code, and the romantic Priceless (2006). She has received critical acclaim for her many roles including the drama A Very Long Engagement (2004) and the biographical drama Coco avant Chanel (2009). She has been nominated three times for the César Award and twice for the BAFTA for Best Actress in a leading role. She became one of the few French actors in history to be invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in June 2004.

Vincent Cassel

Vincent Cassel (French: [vɛ̃sɑ̃ kasɛl]; born Vincent Crochon, 23 November 1966) is a French actor best known to English-speaking audiences through his film performances in Ocean's Twelve and Ocean's Thirteen, as well as Black Swan. Cassel is also renowned for playing the infamous French bank-robber and folk hero Jacques Mesrine in Mesrine: Killer Instinct and Mesrine: Public Enemy Number One.

Early life and family

Cassel was born on 23 November 1966 in Paris, France, to Sabine Litique, and French actor Jean-Pierre Cassel (born Jean-Pierre Crochon). Cassel's brother, Mathias, is a rapper with the group Assassin under the name "Rockin' Squat". His half-sister, Cécile Cassel, is an actress.

Career

Cassel's breakthrough role was in Mathieu Kassovitz's critically acclaimed film La Haine where he played a troubled youth from the deprived outskirts of Paris. He has gone on to act in a variety of films such as the moody L'Appartement (with Monica Bellucci before they married), the violent Dobermann, the genre-bending Le Pacte des Loups (in English, Brotherhood of the Wolf), and the highly controversial Irréversible, where he appears fully nude (with Monica Bellucci after they married).

Silence encombrant, physical and sound theater, first perfomed in 2011 A globe of the earth, a car bonnet, a birdcage, a doll, a washing machine … All of these broken bits of scrap have tumbled out of a waste skip and are hauled away by a group of fragile characters who carry it all with the strength of their own bare arms and an unwavering iron will. Shuffling slowly with hesitant steps, faces caked in dust, there is the clown, the policeman, the prostitute, the poet and all the others who drag (themselves) along the bits of waste and dump them on the tarmac, turning the space into a rubbish tip. Amidst the silence screaming out with noise, with the sound of debris scraping along the ground, the sound of crashing and mute encounters, these men and women try to find some sort of meaning in this puzzle of rubble. This choreography of shadows holds up its resistance, pushing the frontline towards unknown shores, where the madness of the wise,and the wisdom of the mad stare at one another head-on. Dans le silence hurlant de sons, de débris raclant le sol, de chocs et de rencontres muettes, ces hommes et ces femmes tentent de trouver un sens à ce rébus de débris. Ce bal des ombres résiste et pousse la ligne de front vers une rive incertaine, celle où la folie des sages et la sagesse des fous s’observent. Naufrage, fable orgasmique et tellurique, création 2015 « J’imagine un spectacle grotesque, déraisonnable, excessif, drôle et poétique, où Dieu nous regarde et se fout de nous. Un monde à la Fellini. » Le tableau du radeau de la méduse est un manifeste politique et social. C’est également la métaphore que Barthélemy Bompard a choisie pour aborder l’échouage de notre bateau « démocrapitaliste ». La nuit. Bruit de klaxons, de bus, de voitures qui freinent. Dans l’immense mer humaine d’une ville en ébullition, sept personnages crus comme la viande, acides comme la mauvaise sueur, drôles comme le malheur chez les autres…oscillent entre outrance et déchéance. Parabole de l’époque, débauche impudique, farce pessimiste, paroxysme du chacun pour soi. Déguisés dans un tourbillon de couleurs grinçantes, ces poules, coqs, canards et autres êtres hybrides de la haute basse-cour s’embarquent dans une orgie picturale jusqu’à boire, manger, jouir et exploser. Dissous dans le gros sel de leurs excès, emportés par les ressacs des mondes entrechoqués comme en un terrible tremblement de mer, ils se retrouvent perdus au milieu du septième continent. Sur fond de musique expérimentale, d’interventions vocales et de frottements de sacs plastiques, ils vacillent... Abandon-prière-hystérie-larmes-au secours-trouver sa place-espoir-prostré- équilibre-déséquilibre-hallucination-canibalisme-joie-folie-peur… L’horizon n’est plus à leurs pieds, sur le tarmac dur de l’action et de l’apparence mais exposé au vent de leur tréfonds. Entre folie et solitude, la ligne de démarcation est infime et infinie.
