Interview with Brigadier-General Richard Giguère, Commander of Land Force Quebec Area and Joint Task Force (East), on the reason the Canadian Army needs to train in the Far North.
From March 3 to 10, the small community of Salluit (1,200 inhabitants) received the Arctic Response Company Group (ARCG) as part of Exercise GUERRIER NORDIQUE 2012. The aim of the exercise was to train the ARCG in an arctic and sub-arctic climate so they can carry out missions and ensure the sovereignty of Québec’s Far North.
In total, 204 soldiers from the Canadian Army Reserve were deployed in a region where the wind chill temperature hovers around 48 degrees below zero. Although the ARCG is made up primarily of members from 35 Canadian Brigade Group, other soldiers joined them for the exercise.
Twelve U.S. National Guard soldiers from Vermont and Maine, a platoon from
34 Canadian Brigade Group, and members of 2nd Canadian Ranger Patrol Group (2 CRPG) also took part. The Rangers participated as instructors.

History
[edit]Partridge and his academy
The university was founded in 1819 at Norwich by military educator and former superintendent of West Point, Captain Alden B. Partridge. Captain Partridge believed in the "American System of Education," a traditional liberal arts curriculum with instruction in civil engineering and military science. After leaving West Point because of congressional disapproval of his system, he returned to his native state of Vermont to create the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy. Captain Partridge, in founding his academy, rebelled against the reforms of Sylvanus Thayer to prevent the rise of what he saw as the greatest threat to the security of the young republic: a professional officer class. He believed that a well-trained militia was an urgent necessity and developed the American system around that idea. His academy became the inspiration for a number of military colleges throughout the nation, including both the Virginia Military Institute and The Citadel, and later the land grant colleges created through the Morrill Act of 1862.[4]
Partridge's educational beliefs were considered radical at the time, and this led to his conflicting views with the federal government while he was the superintendent of West Point. Upon creation of his own school, he immediately incorporated classes of agriculture and modern languages in addition to the sciences, liberal arts, and various military subjects. Field exercises, for which Partridge borrowed cannon and muskets from the federal and state governments, supplemented classroom instruction and added an element of realism to the college’s program of well-rounded military education.
Partridge founded six other military institutions during his quest to reform the fledgling United States military. They were the Virginia Literary, Scientific and Military Academy at Portsmouth, Virginia (1839–1846), Pennsylvania Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy at Bristol, Pennsylvania (1842–1845), Pennsylvania Military Institute at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (1845–1848), Wilmington Literary, Scientific and Military Academy at Wilmington, Delaware (1846–1848), the Scientific and Military Collegiate Institute at Reading, Pennsylvania (1850–1854), Gymnasium and Military Institute at Pembroke, New Hampshire (1850–1853) and the National Scientific and Military Academy at Brandywine Springs, Delaware (1853).[5]
[edit]Fire and hardship: Norwich in the 19th century
In 1825 the academy moved to Middletown, Connecticut, to provide better naval training to the school's growing corps of cadets. In 1829, the state of Connecticut declined to grant Captain Partridge a charter and he moved the school back to Norwich (the Middletown campus became Wesleyan University in 1831). Beginning in 1826, the college offered the first program of courses in civil engineering in the US. In 1834 Vermont granted a charter and recognized the institution as Norwich University. During the 1856 academic year, the first chapter of the Theta Chi Fraternity was founded by cadets Frederick Norton Freeman and Arthur Chase. With the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, Norwich cadets served as instructors of the state militias throughout the Northeast and the entire class of 1862 enlisted upon its graduation. Norwich turned out hundreds of officers and soldiers who served with the federal armies in the American Civil War, including four recipients of the Medal of Honor. One graduate led a corps, seven more headed divisions, 21 commanded brigades, 38 led regiments, and various alumni served in 131 different regimental organizations. In addition, these men were eyewitnesses to some of the war's most dramatic events, including the bloodiest day of the conflict at Antietam, the attack up Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg, and the repulse of Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. Seven hundred and fifty Norwich men served in the Civil War, of whom sixty fought for the Confederacy.[6] Because of the university's participation in the struggle, the number of students dwindled to seven in the class of 1864 alone.
The Confederate raid on St. Albans, Vermont precipitated fear that Newport, Vermont was an imminent target. The corps quickly boarded an express train for Newport, the same day, October 19, 1864, to the great relief of the inhabitants.
After a catastrophic fire in 1866 which devastated the entire campus, the town of Northfield welcomed the struggling school. The Civil War, the fire, and the uncertainty regarding the continuation of the University seriously lowered the attendance, and the school opened in the fall of 1866 with only 19 students. The 1870s and 1880s saw many financially turbulent times for the institution and the renaming of the school to Lewis College in 1880. In 1881 the student body was reduced to only a dozen men. Later, by 1884, the Vermont Legislature had the name of the school changed back to Norwich. In 1898 the university was designated as the Military

Brigadier general
Brigadier general is a senior rank in the armed forces. It is the lowest ranking general officer in some countries, usually sitting between the ranks of colonel and major general. When appointed to a field command, a brigadier general is typically in command of a brigade consisting of around 4,000 troops (four battalions). In some countries a brigadier general is informally designated as a one-star general (OF-6).
In some countries, this rank is given the name of brigadier, which is often considered not to be a general-officer rank, but is usually equivalent to brigadier general in the armies of nations that use the rank.
The rank can be traced back to the militaries of Europe where a brigadier general, or simply a brigadier, would command a brigade in the field. An alternative rank of "brigade general" was first used in the French revolutionary armies.
In the first quarter of the 20th century, British and Commonwealth armies used the rank of brigadier general as a temporary appointment, or as an honorary appointment on retirement; in the 1920s this practice changed to the use of brigadier, which was not classed as a general officer.

Craft in America
Craft in America, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Los Angeles, California. Conceived and founded by Carol Sauvion, its mission is to document the history and current practice of hand crafted work in America, and further an appreciation of its significance.
Its Emmy-nominated and Peabody Award-winning PBS television documentary series Craft in America journeys to a wide range of artist studios, institutions and community groups across the nation. The show first aired in 2007 and has produced 13 episodes thus far exploring themes such as "Memory," "Process," and, most recently, "Service".
Additional projects include the Craft in America Study Center which offers artists’ talks, access to an extensive library and archive of video footage, a touring exhibition, and an illustrated book.

General officer
A general officer is an officer of high rank in the army, and in some nations' air forces or marines.
The term "general" is used in two ways: as the generic title for all grades of general officer and as a specific rank. It originates in the 16th century, as a shortening of captain general, which rank was taken from Middle French capitaine général. The adjective general had been affixed to officer designations since the late medieval period to indicate relative superiority or an extended jurisdiction.
Today, the title of "General" is known in some countries as a four-star rank. However different countries use different systems of stars for senior ranks. It has a NATO code of OF-9 and is the highest rank currently in use in a number of armies.
General officer ranks
The various grades of general officer are at the top of the military rank structure. Lower-ranking officers in land-centric military forces are typically known as field officers or field-grade officers, and below them are company-grade officers.

Brigadier
Brigadier /brɪɡəˈdɪər/ is a military rank, the seniority of which depends on the country.
In some countries, it is a senior rank above colonel, equivalent to a brigadier general, typically commanding a brigade of several thousand men.
In other countries, it is a non-commissioned rank (e.g. Spain, Italy, France, the Netherlands).

In many countries, especially those formerly part of the British Empire, a brigadier is either the highest field rank or most junior general appointment, nominally commanding a brigade. It ranks above colonel and below major general.
The rank is used by the British Army, the Royal Marines, the Australian Army, the Indian Army, the Sri Lankan Army, the New Zealand Army, the Pakistan Army and several others. Although it is not always considered a general officer rank, it is always considered equivalent to the brigadier general and brigade general rank of other countries. In NATO forces, brigadier is OF-6 on the rank scale.

After leaving West Point because of congressional disapproval of his system, he returned to his native state of Vermont to create the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy. Captain Partridge, in founding his academy, rebelled against the reforms of Sylvanus Thayer to prevent the rise of what he saw as the greatest threat to the security of the young republic: a professional officer class. He believed that a well-trained militia was an urgent necessity and developed the American system around that idea. His academy became the inspiration for a number of military colleges throughout the nation, including both the Virginia Military Institute and The Citadel, and later the land grant colleges created through the Morrill Act of 1862.[4] Partridge's educational beliefs were considered radical at the time, and this led to his conflicting views with the federal government while he was the superintendent of West Point. Upon creation of his own school, he immediately incorporated classes of agriculture and modern languages in addition to the sciences, liberal arts, and various military subjects. Field exercises, for which Partridge borrowed cannon and muskets from the federal and state governments, supplemented classroom instruction and added an element of realism to the college’s program of well-rounded military education. Partridge founded six other military institutions during his quest to reform the fledgling United States military. They were the Virginia Literary, Scientific and Military Academy at Portsmouth, Virginia (1839–1846), Pennsylvania Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy at Bristol, Pennsylvania (1842–1845), Pennsylvania Military Institute at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (1845–1848), Wilmington Literary, Scientific and Military Academy at Wilmington, Delaware (1846–1848), the Scientific and Military Collegiate Institute at Reading, Pennsylvania (1850–1854), Gymnasium and Military Institute at Pembroke, New Hampshire (1850–1853) and the National Scientific and Military Academy at Brandywine Springs, Delaware (1853).[5] [edit]Fire and hardship: Norwich in the 19th century In 1825 the academy moved to Middletown, Connecticut, to provide better naval training to the school's growing corps of cadets. In 1829, the state of Connecticut declined to grant Captain Partridge a charter and he moved the school back to Norwich (the Middletown campus became Wesleyan University in 1831). Beginning in 1826, the college offered the first program of courses in civil engineering in the US. In 1834 Vermont granted a charter and recognized the institution as Norwich University. During the 1856 academic year, the first chapter of the Theta Chi Fraternity was founded by cadets Frederick Norton Freeman and Arthur Chase. With the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, Norwich cadets served as instructors of the state militias throughout the Northeast and the entire class of 1862 enlisted upon its graduation. Norwich turned out hundreds of officers and soldiers who served with the federal armies in the American Civil War, including four recipients of the Medal of Honor. One graduate led a corps, seven more headed divisions, 21 commanded brigades, 38 led regiments, and various alumni served in 131 different regimental organizations. In addition, these men were eyewitnesses to some of the war's most dramatic events, including the bloodiest day of the conflict at Antietam, the attack up Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg, and the repulse of Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. Seven hundred and fifty Norwich men served in the Civil War, of whom sixty fought for the Confederacy.[6] Because of the university's participation in the struggle, the number of students dwindled to seven in the class of 1864 alone. The Confederate raid on St. Albans, Vermont precipitated fear that Newport, Vermont was an imminent target. The corps quickly boarded an express train for Newport, the same day, October 19, 1864, to the great relief of the inhabitants. After a catastrophic fire in 1866 which devastated the entire campus, the town of Northfield welcomed the struggling school. The Civil War, the fire, and the uncertainty regarding the continuation of the University seriously lowered the attendance, and the school opened in the fall of 1866 with only 19 students. The 1870s and 1880s saw many financially turbulent times for the institution and the renaming of the school to Lewis College in 1880. In 1881 the student body was reduced to only a dozen men. ✩ Operation Market Garden (September 17-September 25, 1944) was an Allied military operation in World War II. Its tactical objectives were to secure a series of bridges over the main rivers of the German-occupied Netherlands by large-scale use of airborne forces together with a rapid advance by armoured units along the connecting roads, for the strategic purpose of allowing an Allied crossing of the Rhine river, the last major natural barrier to an advance into Germany. The operation was initially successful with the capture of the Waal bridge at Nijmegen on 20 September, but was a failure overall as the final Rhine bridge at Arnhem was never taken and a German counter-offensive destroyed the British 1st Airborne Division. The Rhine would remain a barrier to the Allied advance until March 1945. The defeat of Allied forces at Arnhem is considered the last major German victory of the Western Campaign. Market would employ three of the five divisions of the 1st Airborne army. The US 101st Airborne Division, under Major General Maxwell D. Taylor, would drop in two locations just north of the XXX Corps to take the bridges northwest of Eindhoven at Son and Veghel. The 82nd Airborne Division, under brigadier General James M. Gavin, would drop quite a bit northeast of them to take the bridges at Grave and Nijmegen, and finally the British 1st Airborne Division, under General Roy Urquhart and Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade would drop at the extreme north end of the route, to take the road bridge at Arnhem and rail bridge at Oosterbeek. -

Wethersby "Pinky" Fothergill ('Jerry Colonna' (qv)), is the chief carrier pigeon trainer. Rehearsal for the big army show is being held by Private Stephen Chandler ('Allan Jones (I)' (qv). Daisy, looking like just another female impersonator to him, is mistaken for one of the boys in the chorus. Pinky sets him straight and they cut Daisy's hair and get her into a uniform, but have to work hard to convince Sergeant Butts ('William Demarest' (qv)) she is one of the boys. In total, 204 soldiers from the Canadian Army Reserve were deployed in a region where the wind chill temperature hovers around 48 degrees below zero. Although the ARCG is made up primarily of members from 35 Canadian Brigade Group, other soldiers joined them for the exercise.
Twelve U.S. National Guard soldiers from Vermont and Maine, a platoon from
34 Canadian Brigade Group, and members of 2nd Canadian Ranger Patrol Group (2 CRPG) also took part. The Rangers participated as instructors.

The university was founded in 1819 at Norwich by military educator and former superintendent of West Point, Captain Alden B. Partridge. Captain Partridge believed in the "American System of Education," a traditional liberal arts curriculum with instruction in civil engineering and military science. After leaving West Point because of congressional disapproval of his system, he returned to his native state of Vermont to create the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy. Captain Partridge, in founding his academy, rebelled against the reforms of Sylvanus Thayer to prevent the rise of what he saw as the greatest threat to the security of the young republic: a professional officer class. He believed that a well-trained militia was an urgent necessity and developed the American system around that idea. His academy became the inspiration for a number of military colleges throughout the nation, including both the Virginia Military Institute and The Citadel, and later the land grant colleges created through the Morrill Act of 1862.[4]
Partridge's educational beliefs were considered radical at the time, and this led to his conflicting views with the federal government while he was the superintendent of West Point. Upon creation of his own school, he immediately incorporated classes of agriculture and modern languages in addition to the sciences, liberal arts, and various military subjects. In 1829, the state of Connecticut declined to grant Captain Partridge a charter and he moved the school back to Norwich (the Middletown campus became Wesleyan University in 1831). Beginning in 1826, the college offered the first program of courses in civil engineering in the US. In 1834 Vermont granted a charter and recognized the institution as Norwich University. During the 1856 academic year, the first chapter of the Theta Chi Fraternity was founded by cadets Frederick Norton Freeman and Arthur Chase. With the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, Norwich cadets served as instructors of the state militias throughout the Northeast and the entire class of 1862 enlisted upon its graduation. Norwich turned out hundreds of officers and soldiers who served with the federal armies in the American Civil War, including four recipients of the Medal of Honor. One graduate led a corps, seven more headed divisions, 21 commanded brigades, 38 led regiments, and various alumni served in 131 different regimental organizations. In addition, these men were eyewitnesses to some of the war's most dramatic events, including the bloodiest day of the conflict at Antietam, the attack up Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg, and the repulse of Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. Seven hundred and fifty Norwich men served in the Civil War, of whom sixty fought for the Confederacy.[6] Because of the university's participation in the struggle, the number of students dwindled to seven in the class of 1864 alone.
The Confederate raid on St. Albans, Vermont precipitated fear that Newport, Vermont was an imminent target. The corps quickly boarded an express train for Newport, the same day, October 19, 1864, to the great relief of the inhabitants.
After a catastrophic fire in 1866 which devastated the entire campus, the town of Northfield welcomed the struggling school. The Civil War, the fire, and the uncertainty regarding the continuation of the University seriously lowered the attendance, and the school opened in the fall of 1866 with only 19 students. The 1870s and 1880s saw many financially turbulent times for the institution and the renaming of the school to Lewis College in 1880. In 1881 the student body was reduced to only a dozen men. Later, by 1884, the Vermont Legislature had the name of the school changed back to Norwich. In 1898 the university was designated as the Military

The university was founded in 1819 at Norwich by military educator and former superintendent of West Point, Captain Alden B. Partridge. Captain Partridge believed in the "American System of Education," a traditional liberal arts curriculum with instruction in civil engineering and military science. After leaving West Point because of congressional disapproval of his system, he returned to his native state of Vermont to create the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy. Captain Partridge, in founding his academy, rebelled against the reforms of Sylvanus Thayer to prevent the rise of what he saw as the greatest threat to the security of the young republic: a professional officer class. He believed that a well-trained militia was an urgent necessity and developed the American system around that idea. His academy became the inspiration for a number of military colleges throughout the nation, including both the Virginia Military Institute and The Citadel, and later the land grant colleges created through the Morrill Act of 1862.[4]
Partridge's educational beliefs were considered radical at the time, and this led to his conflicting views with the federal government while he was the superintendent of West Point. Upon creation of his own school, he immediately incorporated classes of agriculture and modern languages in addition to the sciences, liberal arts, and various military subjects. Operation Market Garden (September 17-September 25, 1944) was an Allied military operation in World War II. Its tactical objectives were to secure a series of bridges over the main rivers of the German-occupied Netherlands by large-scale use of airborne forces together with a rapid advance by armoured units along the connecting roads, for the strategic purpose of allowing an Allied crossing of the Rhine river, the last major natural barrier to an advance into Germany.
The operation was initially successful with the capture of the Waal bridge at Nijmegen on 20 September, but was a failure overall as the final Rhine bridge at Arnhem was never taken and a German counter-offensive destroyed the British 1st Airborne Division. The Rhine would remain a barrier to the Allied advance until March 1945. The defeat of Allied forces at Arnhem is considered the last major German victory of the Western Campaign.

Attribution for all the video is encompassed with the credits at the end, for the three COMCAM units, Navy, Army and Air Force, that had deployed assets in this theater at that time. This was a Joint COMCAM deployment, and Liedle was deployed from the Air Force 1st Combat Camera Squadron, as the deployed team leader for the Joint COMCAM forces throughout Bosnia.
The interview with Brigadier General Matthews, commander of the 353rd Civil Affairs unit, was directed by Liedle and shot by US Navy Photographer's Mate 1st Class Glen J. Hurd, then Hurd and Liedle edited the clip using archived footage.
The music at the open and close was played by a group of Bosnians we met at a local restaurant in Sarajevo. We recorded several takes, and came up with the 'sad' theme for the opening, and an upbeat piece for the closing; there are screen credits for the musicians at the end of this video. They were displaced from their professions during the war, and were surviving using whatever means available; I found them to be dignified and kind, and I felt honored to work with them.
BG Matthews was the perfect spokesman for this deployed COMCAM operation, because his CIMIC unit was a primary customer for Combat Camera imagery and production support. They used COMCAM products to communicate about their mission to people in Bosnia and people back in the US.

Elaine Didier, Director of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum and Library hosted the symposium. Victoria Vuletich, Chair A.B.A. Center for Professional Responsibility's Continuing Legal Education Committee served as the panel moderator. The three member panel was composed of various leaders in their related fields, bringing different insights regarding the current status of ethics in America.
Steve Ford, son of Gerald & Betty Ford, offered opening remarks from an "insider's view of his father’s values". Ford spoke on how his father was a man whose strong ethics and sense of right and wrong allowed him to do the unpopular, but right thing. Ford offered President Gerald R. Ford's pardoning of Richard Nixon as an example of how his father demonstrated his willingness to possibly sacrifice a second term. President Ford believed the pardon would move to "heal the nation" and allow for the focus of the country to be shifted to more pressing issues of the day, the Vietnam War and downtrodden stock market.
Brigadier General Michael McDaniel’s, former Deputy Assistant Director of the U.S. Department of Defense, spoke of the obligation public servants have upon being sworn in to their office to promote the general welfare and at the same time protecting self interests of the individual. McDaniel outlined the dynamics and tension between self and collective interests, citing the Westboro Baptist Church's protests at fallen soldiers funerals as an example.
Terri Lynn Land, former Michigan Secretary of State, focused on ethics in the political arena. Land specifically worked for campaign finance reform and also worked to create legislation which would have provided more transparency during her time in office. Land also referred to her office making polling places more accessible to handicapped citizens. Though it was an expensive and thus somewhat unpopular choice, she believed it was "the right thing to do".
Bruce A. Courtrade, Vice President of Commissioners for the State Bar of Michigan, argued for the relationship between a struggling economy and a perceived decline in ethics. Michigan, being the only state in the last census to lose population has been forced into the practice of "unhiring employees". This increased competition to gain and retain clients has led to a "win at all cost mentality", which in turn Courtrade believed has led to ethical crises (i.e. Enron's and Wall Street).

Metalsmiths create powerful art - from delicate jewelry to monumental sculptures - in FORGE
CRAFT IN AMERICA, the Emmy-nominated and Peabody Award-winning series dedicated to exploring craft in our nation, begins Season Five with FORGE, premiering on PBS primetime, Friday, October 25, 2013 at 10pm*. Forging is an ancient method where metal is heated and reheated, strengthened and hammered into sinuous, extravagant curves. Through this mysterious process, artists express their creativity and skill.
The craft of silversmithing in New England existed even before America's most patriotic silversmith, Paul Revere, made his famous ride. Old Newbury Crafters in Amesbury, Massachusetts was one of the best at the time. Fourteen generations later, it is now in the capable hands of a young metal artist, Chloe Darke. She leads the company in handforging extraordinary objects and declares "there's a rebirth of craft for people in my generation who are interested in traditional ways of making things." Retired silversmith Robert Lapham says Darke "is exactly what this company needs for the future."
Iraq war veteran Tom Pullin forged his life in the military, turning to the GI Bill to pursue training at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC. For Pullin, metal work is a healing path to exorcize the chaotic, confusing, horrifying experiences of war. Pullin works with instructor Davidé Prete and fellow veteran Jeremiah Holland to combine ancient techniques of forging and casting with cutting edge 3-D printing technology. They create a metal skull, a haunting reminder of a young Iraqi girl whose grave was disturbed in a search for a downed Marine. Retired Brigadier General Nolen Bivens, nationally recognized champion of the Army Arts & Crafts program, emphasizes the importance of creativity in the military and the incalculable benefits of the arts to America's warriors.
Albert Paley prepares for the most ambitious project of his fifty-year career: Paley on Park Avenue. Thirteen monumental sculptures will be on view on Park Avenue in New York City from June 17 - November 8, 2013. Amid the flying sparks and the red-hot steel, we witness Paley's mastery of all the processes necessary to turn sheets of metal into seemingly weightless ribbons undulating twenty feet above the ground. Paley has pursued a career that has consistently challenged his abilities. "I have a very aggressive, assertive personality and it is made manifest through the materials", Paley says. From fabricating art jewelry, to forging iron gates, to the creation of large-scale sculptures commissioned for public and private spaces worldwide, Albert Paley is now ranked among the most successful and prolific sculptors in America.

Forging is an ancient method where metal is heated and reheated, strengthened and hammered into sinuous, extravagant curves. Through this mysterious process, artists express their creativity and skill.
The craft of silversmithing in New England existed even before America's most patriotic silversmith, Paul Revere, made his famous ride. Old Newbury Crafters in Amesbury, Massachusetts was one of the best at the time. Fourteen generations later, it is now in the capable hands of a young metal artist, Chloe Darke. She leads the company in handforging extraordinary objects and declares "there's a rebirth of craft for people in my generation who are interested in traditional ways of making things." Retired silversmith Robert Lapham says Darke "is exactly what this company needs for the future."
Iraq war veteran Tom Pullin forged his life in the military, turning to the GI Bill to pursue training at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC. For Pullin, metal work is a healing path to exorcize the chaotic, confusing, horrifying experiences of war. Pullin works with instructor Davidé Prete and fellow veteran Jeremiah Holland to combine ancient techniques of forging and casting with cutting edge 3-D printing technology. They create a metal skull, a haunting reminder of a young Iraqi girl whose grave was disturbed in a search for a downed Marine. Retired Brigadier General Nolen Bivens, nationally recognized champion of the Army Arts & Crafts program, emphasizes the importance of creativity in the military and the incalculable benefits of the arts to America's warriors.
Albert Paley prepares for the most ambitious project of his fifty-year career: Paley on Park Avenue. Thirteen monumental sculptures will be on view on Park Avenue in New York City from June 17 - November 8, 2013. Amid the flying sparks and the red-hot steel, we witness Paley's mastery of all the processes necessary to turn sheets of metal into seemingly weightless ribbons undulating twenty feet above the ground. Paley has pursued a career that has consistently challenged his abilities. "I have a very aggressive, assertive personality and it is made manifest through the materials", Paley says. From fabricating art jewelry, to forging iron gates, to the creation of large-scale sculptures commissioned for public and private spaces worldwide, Albert Paley is now ranked among the most successful and prolific sculptors in America.
The Craft in America series is the result of years of advocacy, research and filmmaking by Executive Producer/Director Carol Sauvion. "Craft is once again proving its relevance as people return to the handmade."

More than 500,000 landmines and other explosive remnants of war contaminate over 200 million square meters of land in Israel. When eleven-year old Daniel Yuval lost his leg to one of those landmines last February, in the Golan Heights, the Israeli public woke up to the need to demine these remnants of war. This year, 73 Knesset Members from all political parties in Israel co-sponsored new legislation to establish a humanitarian demining authority to clear all nonoperational minefields. The bill has received widespread support from the Israeli public, Knesset and leading officials. In the coming weeks, members of the Knesset Defense and Security Committee will propose a final version of the legislation for public reading and vote for passage in 2011. Landmine survivors Daniel Yuval and Jerry White and a delegation from Israel along with a US official overseeing similar efforts worldwide discuss that country’s initiative to establish a national policy to remove landmines from non-operational minefields, within a specified timeframe, and in accordance with international humanitarian mine action standards.

Daniel Yuval is the Youth Ambassador for a Mine-Free Israel. He is eleven years old, studying in the sixth grade at Golan Elementary School in Ramat-Hasharon. He lost his leg below the knee to a landmine in Mount Avital nature reserve in the Golan Heights on February 6, 2010.
Major General (res.) MK Matan Vilnai is the Deputy Defense Minister of Israel, and a member of the Knesset for the Labor Party. MG Vilnai was formerly Minister of Science, Culture and Sport. As MG in the IDF, Vilnai served as the head of the Manpower Directorate, and as the Deputy Chief of Staff.
Jerry White is a recognized leader in the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, co-recipient of the 1997 Nobel Prize for Peace. He currently serves as the International Chair for a Mine-Free Middle East, working from Malta in a volunteer capacity for Roots of Peace.
Heidi Kuhn is Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Roots of Peace. A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley in Political Economics of Industrial Societies, Kühn has received several awards and recognitions for her vision and work creating a humanitarian organization with a mission to build “peace from the ground up.”
Brigadier General (res.) Motti M. Biran is Chairman and CEO of MicroSpark, a privately held company developing explosive trace detection technology. He served in the IDF as Chief of Staff of Central Command and Chief of the Military Police after spending a career in the Combat Engineering Corps.
Colonel (res.) Pini J. Dagan is the managing partner of Quadro Projects & Technologies, Ltd, a company specializing in clearance of explosive remnants of war and is an official contractor of the Ministry of Defense. Dagan was formerly Israel's Military Attaché in Argentina, Head of IDF Combat Engineering Corps School, and Chief Combat Engineering Corps Officer for the IDF Northern Command.
Dhyan Or is Country Director for Israel and Coordinator of the Mine-Free Israel Coalition. The coalition includes members from civil society, local and national government, private sector and landmine survivors from across the country.
James F. Lawrence is Director of the U.S. State Department’s Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement, in the Bureau of Political Military Affairs. This office represents the US and manages humanitarian mine action activities worldwide, and sustains public-private partnerships with NGOs supporting landmine removal, mine risk awareness and victim assistance.

Interview with Brigadier-General Richard Giguère, Commander of Land Force Quebec Area and Joint Task Force (East), on the reason the Canadian Army needs to train in the Far North.
From March 3 to 10, the small community of Salluit (1,200 inhabitants) received the Arctic Response Company Group (ARCG) as part of Exercise GUERRIER NORDIQUE 2012. The aim of the exercise was to train the ARCG in an arctic and sub-arctic climate so they can carry out missions and ensure the sovereignty of Québec’s Far North.
In total, 204 soldiers from the Canadian Army Reserve were deployed in a region where the wind chill temperature hovers around 48 degrees below zero. Although the ARCG is made up primarily of members from 35 Canadian Brigade Group, other soldiers joined them for the exercise.
Twelve U.S. National Guard soldiers from Vermont and Maine, a platoon from
34 Canadian Brigade Group, and members of 2nd Canadian Ranger Patrol Group (2 CRPG) also took part. The Rangers participated as instructors.

The university was founded in 1819 at Norwich by military educator and former superintendent of West Point, Captain Alden B. Partridge. Captain Partridge believed in the "American System of Education," a traditional liberal arts curriculum with instruction in civil engineering and military science. After leaving West Point because of congressional disapproval of his system, he returned to his native state of Vermont to create the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy. Captain Partridge, in founding his academy, rebelled against the reforms of Sylvanus Thayer to prevent the rise of what he saw as the greatest threat to the security of the young republic: a professional officer class. He believed that a well-trained militia was an urgent necessity and developed the American system around that idea. His academy became the inspiration for a number of military colleges throughout the nation, including both the Virginia Military Institute and The Citadel, and later the land grant colleges created through the Morrill Act of 1862.[4]
Partridge's educational beliefs were considered radical at the time, and this led to his conflicting views with the federal government while he was the superintendent of West Point. Upon creation of his own school, he immediately incorporated classes of agriculture and modern languages in addition to the sciences, liberal arts, and various military subjects. Field exercises, for which Partridge borrowed cannon and muskets from the federal and state governments, supplemented classroom instruction and added an element of realism to the college’s program of well-rounded military education.
Partridge founded six other military institutions during his quest to reform the fledgling United States military. They were the Virginia Literary, Scientific and Military Academy at Portsmouth, Virginia (1839–1846), Pennsylvania Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy at Bristol, Pennsylvania (1842–1845), Pennsylvania Military Institute at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (1845–1848), Wilmington Literary, Scientific and Military Academy at Wilmington, Delaware (1846–1848), the Scientific and Military Collegiate Institute at Reading, Pennsylvania (1850–1854), Gymnasium and Military Institute at Pembroke, New Hampshire (1850–1853) and the National Scientific and Military Academy at Brandywine Springs, Delaware (1853).[5]
[edit]Fire and hardship: Norwich in the 19th century
In 1825 the academy moved to Middletown, Connecticut, to provide better naval training to the school's growing corps of cadets. In 1829, the state of Connecticut declined to grant Captain Partridge a charter and he moved the school back to Norwich (the Middletown campus became Wesleyan University in 1831). Beginning in 1826, the college offered the first program of courses in civil engineering in the US. In 1834 Vermont granted a charter and recognized the institution as Norwich University. During the 1856 academic year, the first chapter of the Theta Chi Fraternity was founded by cadets Frederick Norton Freeman and Arthur Chase. With the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, Norwich cadets served as instructors of the state militias throughout the Northeast and the entire class of 1862 enlisted upon its graduation. Norwich turned out hundreds of officers and soldiers who served with the federal armies in the American Civil War, including four recipients of the Medal of Honor. One graduate led a corps, seven more headed divisions, 21 commanded brigades, 38 led regiments, and various alumni served in 131 different regimental organizations. In addition, these men were eyewitnesses to some of the war's most dramatic events, including the bloodiest day of the conflict at Antietam, the attack up Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg, and the repulse of Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. Seven hundred and fifty Norwich men served in the Civil War, of whom sixty fought for the Confederacy.[6] Because of the university's participation in the struggle, the number of students dwindled to seven in the class of 1864 alone.
The Confederate raid on St. Albans, Vermont precipitated fear that Newport, Vermont was an imminent target. The corps quickly boarded an express train for Newport, the same day, October 19, 1864, to the great relief of the inhabitants.
After a catastrophic fire in 1866 which devastated the entire campus, the town of Northfield welcomed the struggling school. The Civil War, the fire, and the uncertainty regarding the continuation of the University seriously lowered the attendance, and the school opened in the fall of 1866 with only 19 students. The 1870s and 1880s saw many financially turbulent times for the institution and the renaming of the school to Lewis College in 1880. In 1881 the student body was reduced to only a dozen men. Later, by 1884, the Vermont Legislature had the name of the school changed back to Norwich. In 1898 the university was designated as the Military

During the 1856 academic year, the first chapter of the Theta Chi Fraternity was founded by cadets Frederick Norton Freeman and Arthur Chase. With the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, Norwich cadets served as instructors of the state militias throughout the Northeast and the entire class of 1862 enlisted upon its graduation. Norwich turned out hundreds of officers and soldiers who served with the federal armies in the American Civil War, including four recipients of the Medal of Honor. One graduate led a corps, seven more headed divisions, 21 commanded brigades, 38 led regiments, and various alumni served in 131 different regimental organizations. In addition, these men were eyewitnesses to some of the war's most dramatic events, including the bloodiest day of the conflict at Antietam, the attack up Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg, and the repulse of Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. Seven hundred and fifty Norwich men served in the Civil War, of whom sixty fought for the Confederacy.[6] Because of the university's participation in the struggle, the number of students dwindled to seven in the class of 1864 alone.
The Confederate raid on St. Albans, Vermont precipitated fear that Newport, Vermont was an imminent target. The corps quickly boarded an express train for Newport, the same day, October 19, 1864, to the great relief of the inhabitants.
After a catastrophic fire in 1866 which devastated the entire campus, the town of Northfield welcomed the struggling school. The Civil War, the fire, and the uncertainty regarding the continuation of the University seriously lowered the attendance, and the school opened in the fall of 1866 with only 19 students. The 1870s and 1880s saw many financially turbulent times for the institution and the renaming of the school to Lewis College in 1880. In 1881 the student body was reduced to only a dozen men. Later, by 1884, the Vermont Legislature had the name of the school changed back to Norwich. In 1898 the university was designated as the Military

Operation Market Garden (September 17-September 25, 1944) was an Allied military operation in World War II. Its tactical objectives were to secure a series of bridges over the main rivers of the German-occupied Netherlands by large-scale use of airborne forces together with a rapid advance by armoured units along the connecting roads, for the strategic purpose of allowing an Allied crossing of the Rhine river, the last major natural barrier to an advance into Germany.
The operation was initially successful with the capture of the Waal bridge at Nijmegen on 20 September, but was a failure overall as the final Rhine bridge at Arnhem was never taken and a German counter-offensive destroyed the British 1st Airborne Division. The Rhine would remain a barrier to the Allied advance until March 1945. The defeat of Allied forces at Arnhem is considered the last major German victory of the Western Campaign.

Produced in 1996 in Sarajevo by Ted Liedle, the Joint COMCAM Team Chief at the time, now retired and working as an independent producer. The thumbnail visual shows a Bosnian girl weeping as she was talking to IFOR officials because her family was displaced, and she was asking, "why?"
Attribution for all the video is encompassed with the credits at the end, for the three COMCAM units, Navy, Army and Air Force, that had deployed assets in this theater at that time. This was a Joint COMCAM deployment, and Liedle was deployed from the Air Force 1st Combat Camera Squadron, as the deployed team leader for the Joint COMCAM forces throughout Bosnia.
The interview with Brigadier General Matthews, commander of the 353rd Civil Affairs unit, was directed by Liedle and shot by US Navy Photographer's Mate 1st Class Glen J. Hurd, then Hurd and Liedle edited the clip using archived footage.
The music at the open and close was played by a group of Bosnians we met at a local restaurant in Sarajevo. We recorded several takes, and came up with the 'sad' theme for the opening, and an upbeat piece for the closing; there are screen credits for the musicians at the end of this video. They were displaced from their professions during the war, and were surviving using whatever means available; I found them to be dignified and kind, and I felt honored to work with them.
BG Matthews was the perfect spokesman for this deployed COMCAM operation, because his CIMIC unit was a primary customer for Combat Camera imagery and production support. They used COMCAM products to communicate about their mission to people in Bosnia and people back in the US.

Elaine Didier, Director of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum and Library hosted the symposium. Victoria Vuletich, Chair A.B.A. Center for Professional Responsibility's Continuing Legal Education Committee served as the panel moderator. The three member panel was composed of various leaders in their related fields, bringing different insights regarding the current status of ethics in America.
Steve Ford, son of Gerald & Betty Ford, offered opening remarks from an "insider's view of his father’s values". Ford spoke on how his father was a man whose strong ethics and sense of right and wrong allowed him to do the unpopular, but right thing. Ford offered President Gerald R. Ford's pardoning of Richard Nixon as an example of how his father demonstrated his willingness to possibly sacrifice a second term. President Ford believed the pardon would move to "heal the nation" and allow for the focus of the country to be shifted to more pressing issues of the day, the Vietnam War and downtrodden stock market.
Brigadier General Michael McDaniel’s, former Deputy Assistant Director of the U.S. Department of Defense, spoke of the obligation public servants have upon being sworn in to their office to promote the general welfare and at the same time protecting self interests of the individual. McDaniel outlined the dynamics and tension between self and collective interests, citing the Westboro Baptist Church's protests at fallen soldiers funerals as an example.
Terri Lynn Land, former Michigan Secretary of State, focused on ethics in the political arena. Land specifically worked for campaign finance reform and also worked to create legislation which would have provided more transparency during her time in office. Land also referred to her office making polling places more accessible to handicapped citizens. Though it was an expensive and thus somewhat unpopular choice, she believed it was "the right thing to do".
Bruce A. Courtrade, Vice President of Commissioners for the State Bar of Michigan, argued for the relationship between a struggling economy and a perceived decline in ethics. Michigan, being the only state in the last census to lose population has been forced into the practice of "unhiring employees". This increased competition to gain and retain clients has led to a "win at all cost mentality", which in turn Courtrade believed has led to ethical crises (i.e. Enron's and Wall Street).

CRAFT IN AMERICA, the Emmy-nominated and Peabody Award-winning series dedicated to exploring craft in our nation, begins Season Five with FORGE, premiering on PBS primetime, Friday, October 25, 2013 at 10pm*. Forging is an ancient method where metal is heated and reheated, strengthened and hammered into sinuous, extravagant curves. Through this mysterious process, artists express their creativity and skill.
The craft of silversmithing in New England existed even before America's most patriotic silversmith, Paul Revere, made his famous ride. Old Newbury Crafters in Amesbury, Massachusetts was one of the best at the time. Fourteen generations later, it is now in the capable hands of a young metal artist, Chloe Darke. She leads the company in handforging extraordinary objects and declares "there's a rebirth of craft for people in my generation who are interested in traditional ways of making things." Retired silversmith Robert Lapham says Darke "is exactly what this company needs for the future."
Iraq war veteran Tom Pullin forged his life in the military, turning to the GI Bill to pursue training at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC. For Pullin, metal work is a healing path to exorcize the chaotic, confusing, horrifying experiences of war. Pullin works with instructor Davidé Prete and fellow veteran Jeremiah Holland to combine ancient techniques of forging and casting with cutting edge 3-D printing technology. They create a metal skull, a haunting reminder of a young Iraqi girl whose grave was disturbed in a search for a downed Marine. Retired Brigadier General Nolen Bivens, nationally recognized champion of the Army Arts & Crafts program, emphasizes the importance of creativity in the military and the incalculable benefits of the arts to America's warriors.
Albert Paley prepares for the most ambitious project of his fifty-year career: Paley on Park Avenue. Thirteen monumental sculptures will be on view on Park Avenue in New York City from June 17 - November 8, 2013. Amid the flying sparks and the red-hot steel, we witness Paley's mastery of all the processes necessary to turn sheets of metal into seemingly weightless ribbons undulating twenty feet above the ground. Paley has pursued a career that has consistently challenged his abilities. "I have a very aggressive, assertive personality and it is made manifest through the materials", Paley says. From fabricating art jewelry, to forging iron gates, to the creation of large-scale sculptures commissioned for public and private spaces worldwide, Albert Paley is now ranked among the most successful and prolific sculptors in America.
The Craft in America series is the result of years of advocacy, research and filmmaking by Executive Producer/Director Carol Sauvion. "Craft is once again proving its relevance as people return to the handmade."

Local Hispanic business and civic leaders were also recognized for their contributions to their respective communities.
The evening’s keynote speaker was Brigadier General Mr. Hector E. Pagan. Gen. Pagan said, in part "... Hispanic Heritage Month serves as a moment to pause, reflect, honor and celebrate all those great examples of leadership Latinos have given – and continue to give- our nation; a nation that is made stronger by the beautiful tapestry of cultures and ethnic groups, who have found in our soil a land of solace, tolerance, openness and opportunity. ...We are honored by your sacrifice and love for our country. When eleven-year old Daniel Yuval lost his leg to one of those landmines last February, in the Golan Heights, the Israeli public woke up to the need to demine these remnants of war. This year, 73 Knesset Members from all political parties in Israel co-sponsored new legislation to establish a humanitarian demining authority to clear all nonoperational minefields. The bill has received widespread support from the Israeli public, Knesset and leading officials. In the coming weeks, members of the Knesset Defense and Security Committee will propose a final version of the legislation for public reading and vote for passage in 2011. Landmine survivors Daniel Yuval and Jerry White and a delegation from Israel along with a US official overseeing similar efforts worldwide discuss that country’s initiative to establish a national policy to remove landmines from non-operational minefields, within a specified timeframe, and in accordance with international humanitarian mine action standards.

Heidi Kuhn is Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Roots of Peace. Dagan is the managing partner of Quadro Projects & Technologies, Ltd, a company specializing in clearance of explosive remnants of war and is an official contractor of the Ministry of Defense. Dagan was formerly Israel's Military Attaché in Argentina, Head of IDF Combat Engineering Corps School, and Chief Combat Engineering Corps Officer for the IDF Northern Command.
Dhyan Or is Country Director for Israel and Coordinator of the Mine-Free Israel Coalition. The coalition includes members from civil society, local and national government, private sector and landmine survivors from across the country.
James F. Lawrence is Director of the U.S. State Department’s Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement, in the Bureau of Political Military Affairs. This office represents the US and manages humanitarian mine action activities worldwide, and sustains public-private partnerships with NGOs supporting landmine removal, mine risk awareness and victim assistance.
