Chicago (i/ʃᵻˈkɑːɡoʊ/ or /ʃᵻˈkɔːɡoʊ/) is the third most populous city in the United States. With over 2.7 million residents, it is the most populous city in the state of Illinois and the Midwest. The Chicago metropolitan area, often referred to as Chicagoland, has nearly 10 million people and is the third-largest in the U.S. Chicago is the seat of Cook County.
Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837, near a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed, and grew rapidly in the mid-nineteenth century. The city is an international hub for finance, commerce, industry, technology, telecommunications, and transportation: O'Hare International Airport is the busiest airport in the world when measured by aircraft traffic; it also has the largest number of U.S. highways and rail road freight. In 2012, Chicago was listed as an alpha global city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, and ranked seventh in the world in the 2014 Global Cities Index. As of 2014, Chicago had the third largest gross metropolitan product in the United States at US$610.5 billion.
Urban Prep Academies (also known as Urban Prep Charter Academy for Young Men or simply Urban Prep) is a nonprofit organization that operates a network of free open-enrollment public all-male college-preparatory high schools in Chicago. Founded in 2002, and receiving its first Charter approval from Chicago Public Schools in 2005, it operates the first all-male public charter high school in the United States. The network opened a second campus in 2009 and a third in August 2010.
In 2010-2014, 100% of the seniors in the school's graduating classes were admitted to four-year colleges or universities.
In 2002, a group of African-American civic, business, and education leaders, organized by former Hales Franciscan High School President Tim King, determined to establish a new high school in Chicago focused on providing a strong, college-preparatory high school option for boys in under-served African-American communities. African-American males had been, and continue to be, the lowest-performing demographic in Chicago Public Schools. A University of Chicago study published in 2006 reported that only one in 40 African-American boys in Chicago Public Schools will eventually graduate from a 4-year university.

The school's first graduate, Bryant Alexander, says that number is significant because "it's something that you don't see." Urban Prep Academies says it's changing the narrative of "black boys and young men in America." We spoke to some of those young men on their graduation day to learn where they're from, where they're going and what happens when they believe in themselves and their fellow classmates. This summer, only one in four US teenagers will hold a job, and in major cities like Chicago, the rate is far worse. In addition to job losses from the economic crisis, thousands of young people are out of work this year as a result of cuts to Chicago's youth employment programs. For young people trying to pay for college by working over the summer, finding a job is almost impossible. In this video, the first in a series on youth unemployment in Chicago, young people speak out about the lack of summer jobs and social inequality. The next videos in the series will focus on joblessness among young graduates, and the effect of budget cuts on young people. Music Credit: Oddisee - Boston

Wage disparities based on gender have been outlawed in the United States for more than 50 years—yet women earn on average 84 percent of what men earn, according to the Pew Research Center. While the gender pay gap has narrowed since the 1970s, progress has stalled since about 2006. In this episode of the Big Question, Chicago Booth professors Marianne Bertrand and Waverly Deutsch discuss the gap.
Updated Video Location: http://youtu.be/v6q14yBlpjY [Recorded July 15, 2010] In the last fifteen years the very names Bangalore and Silicon Valley have become evocative of the important connections between India and the United States in the global IT industry. Historian Ross Bassett argues that the linkages between the two countries are far older and deeper than is widely known. In the course of his research, he found that Indian graduates of MIT significantly influenced the creation of modern technological India. In the colonial period, a small group of Indians, including some associated with Gandhi, went to MIT as an anti-colonial act and as a way to develop technological capabilities for India. Indian graduates of MIT played a key role in the founding of the Indian Institutes of Tec...
Presented with the Chicago Center for Teaching. Inextricable from the learning dynamics of a class are the interpersonal dynamics of a classroom: there is no such thing as a pedagogical setting exclusive of the people who take part in it, in all their complexity. In this two-part workshop with nationally acclaimed teaching & learning expert Michele DiPietro (Kennessaw State University), we will explore the multifaceted question of identity as it pertains to classroom climate. Much of the public conversation around identity issues in recent years has focused on managing the sensitivities that arise when aspects of identity are exposed or threatened; this conversation will take a different approach, seeking to understand in a more nuanced way what identity is or might be, how it develops, h...
