Shot in and around Kirkenes and Pas National Park bordering Russia, at 70 degree north and 30 degrees east. Temperatures around -25 Celsius. Good fun.

Aurora
An aurora, sometimes referred to as a polar light, is a natural light display in the sky, predominantly seen in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions. Auroras are produced when the magnetosphere is sufficiently disturbed by the solar wind that the trajectories of charged particles in both solar wind and magnetospheric plasma, mainly in the form of electrons and protons, precipitate them into the upper atmosphere (thermosphere/exosphere), where their energy is lost. The resulting ionization and excitation of atmospheric constituents emits light of varying colour and complexity. The form of the aurora, occurring within bands around both polar regions, is also dependent on the amount of acceleration imparted to the precipitating particles. Precipitating protons generally produce optical emissions as incident hydrogen atoms after gaining electrons from the atmosphere. Proton auroras are usually observed at lower latitudes. Different aspects of an aurora are elaborated in various sections below.

AURORA
Aurora Aksnes (born 15 June 1996), stage name AURORA, is a singer-songwriter from Os, Norway. Her debut EP Running with the Wolves was released through Decca Records in May 2015, receiving widespread approval from online music blogs and national press. AURORA’s debut album is set for release in 2016. More recently she has provided the backing track for the 2015 John Lewis Christmas advertisement, singing a cover of the Oasis song "Half the World Away".
Early life
Aurora Aksnes was born on 15 June 1996 in Bergen, Norway. Her earliest musical memory is of finding an electric piano in her parents’ attic and being fascinated by the music she could produce. Her parents never pushed her to pursue music either as a career or as a hobby but as Aurora grew older, she moved on from mimicking classical music to composing her own. She cites renowned songwriters Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan as influences and, aged 10, she began writing songs for the first time. She decided to start playing her music publicly following her mother’s suggestion that her songs could help people.

Between January 23. and 29. I was again in Norway for shooting northern lights. This time I was very lucky, there was a lot of activity on the sky especially on the 24 January. The scenes are from Ravnastua, Skoganvarre and Lakselv. The first two days I had a lot of trouble with frozen Cameras. It was -25°C (-13°F) and after 1-2 hours of shooting the lens was frozen. I used a Canon 5D MarkII with ML, a 7D and a 550D with ML. All the scenes were shoot with this 3 lenses: Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L on 5D, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 on 7D and my Samyang 8mm/f3.5 on 550D. After chasing it for more than two years I was finally rewarded with two displays of Aurora Australis (Southern lights) within a week visible from Mornington peninsula, not far from Melbourne. The nights were warm an clear and the Moon was not in the sky either - I could not have asked for better conditions. The red color of this aurora is caused by the charged particles from the Sun exciting oxygen atoms high in the Earth's atmosphere. Hopefully there will be more to come as Sun's activity increases in 2012-13. Being able to photograph it all night I came up with a nice video. The brighter Aurora happened on January 22nd and the smaller one, featured in the middle section, was from January 16th, followed by a rather bright Moonrise. Aurora 2012
Between January 23. and 29. I was again in Norway for shooting northern lights. This time I was very lucky, there was a lot of activity on the sky especially on the 24 January. The scenes are from Ravnastua, Skoganvarre and Lakselv. The first two days I had a lot of trouble with frozen Cameras. It was -25°C (-13°F) and after 1-2 hours of shooting the lens was frozen. I used a Canon 5D MarkII with ML, a 7D and a 550D with ML. All the scenes were shoot with this 3 lenses: Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L on 5D, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 on 7D and my Samyang 8mm/f3.5 on 550D. Red Aurora Australis
After chasing it for more than two years I was finally rewarded with two displays of Aurora Australis (Southern lights) within a week visible from Mornington peninsula, not far from Melbourne. The nights were warm an clear and the Moon was not in the sky either - I could not have asked for better conditions. The red color of this aurora is caused by the charged particles from the Sun exciting oxygen atoms high in the Earth's atmosphere. Hopefully there will be more to come as Sun's activity increases in 2012-13. Being able to photograph it all night I came up with a nice video. The brighter Aurora happened on January 22nd and the smaller one, featured in the middle section, was from January 16th, followed by a rather bright Moonrise. Captured between 2013.3.1. 22:25 ~23:50 I used Nikon D4, at ISO 6400. 24mm f/1.4G lens at f/2.0 or f/1.4. I also tested Canon 5D mark III same time. But Nikon D4 was absolutely winner. Canon 1Dx may have similar quality. (have similar sensor pixel size) ps) All the people are standing and watching aurora. But one guy is running around. It's me. -.-;;;

Between January 23. and 29. I was again in Norway for shooting northern lights. This time I was very lucky, there was a lot of activity on the sky especially on the 24 January. The scenes are from Ravnastua, Skoganvarre and Lakselv. The first two days I had a lot of trouble with frozen Cameras. It was -25°C (-13°F) and after 1-2 hours of shooting the lens was frozen.
I used a Canon 5D MarkII with ML, a 7D and a 550D with ML. All the scenes were shoot with this 3 lenses: Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L on 5D, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 on 7D and my Samyang 8mm/f3.5 on 550D.

After chasing it for more than two years I was finally rewarded with two displays of Aurora Australis (Southern lights) within a week visible from Mornington peninsula, not far from Melbourne. The nights were warm an clear and the Moon was not in the sky either - I could not have asked for better conditions.
The red color of this aurora is caused by the charged particles from the Sun exciting oxygen atoms high in the Earth's atmosphere. Hopefully there will be more to come as Sun's activity increases in 2012-13.
Being able to photograph it all night I came up with a nice video. The brighter Aurora happened on January 22nd and the smaller one, featured in the middle section, was from January 16th, followed by a rather bright Moonrise.

I have always admired the work of Henry Jun Wah Lee https://vimeo.com/evosia and recently took the opportunity to join him in Iceland. 'Just grab your camera, go to the location, set up the shot and wait for the magic to happen' what a great piece of advice Henry gave us. Not to be out done by the wet and windy weather in the South of Iceland for the first few days, Henry and local charismatic Icelander 'Thorri' http://thorri.is/ took the decision for us all to travel 400km North to greet the recent Solar Storm on it's way from the Sun. We arrived at Borgarfjörður just before sunset and the skies were crystal clear and so we had finally found a place with good weather and now fingers crossed we had to wait for the magic to happen. It sure did, the first time I saw the Aurora my stomach churned like a thousand butterflies and those butterflies only multiplied exponentially as the Aurora grew stronger. 4K version available @ https://youtu.be/JQ3j6MuK12M
Music is licensed from www.marmosetmusic.com 'A Thousand Palisades' by Analog Colours. Various sound effects were added from freesound.org full credit has been given in the video for all clips used. I tried to keep those sounds true to the original sounds minus the shutter noise.
On a technical note I used a Canon 1DC with a 14-24mm Nikon f2.8, Sigma Art 24mm f1.8 and Canon 50mm f1.2, others in our group used the new Sony A7s which were amazing in low light conditions and useful for Aurora spotting in dark skies. I used LRTimelapse and Adobe LightRoom to create the sequences and Premiere Pro to edit it altogether. I graded some sequences with Vision Color. The drone footage at the end is courtesy of Henry who used the 'follow me' command with the DJI Phantom 3 as we headed towards the Glacier. Enjoy :)
