Robert Fern Lyons (July 1, 1856 – December 29, 1926) was a politician in the Canadian province of Manitoba. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1892 to 1895, and again from 1899 to 1914. Lyons was a member of the Conservative Party of Manitoba.
He was born at New Boyne, Canada West (now Ontario), and educated in Athens, Ontario. He later relocated to Manitoba, and worked as a farmer. Lyons was a Methodist, and an active Master freemason.
He was first elected to the Manitoba legislature in the 1892 provincial election, defeating Liberal candidate S.J. Thompson by 82 votes in the Norfolk constituency. The Liberals won this election, and Lyons served as an opposition member. He lost his constituency seat to Liberal George Rogers by 170 votes in the 1896 election.
Lyons was re-elected in the 1899 election, defeating new Liberal candidate J.G. Barron by 68 votes. The Conservatives won the election, and Lyons served as a backbench supporter of the Hugh John Macdonald and Rodmond Palen Roblin administrations. He was re-elected in the provincial elections of 1903, 1907 and 1910.
Robert F. Lyons (born October 17, 1939 in Albany, New York) is an American actor of film and television. He is best known for guest starring in numerous popular television shows since the 1960s and for appearing in such films as Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981), Death Wish II (1982), Murphy's Law (1986) and Platoon Leader (1988).
Lyons made his screen debut in the television series I Dream of Jeannie and made his film debut in Pendulum (1969). Since then he has appeared in such films as Shoot Out (1971) (as the main villain, opposite good guy Gregory Peck), Avenging Angel (1985) and Pray for Morning (2006) and such television shows as Gunsmoke, Medical Center, Falcon Crest, Roswell and Criminal Minds. In 1999 he played Dr Lester Arnold on Days of Our Lives. 2015 starred along Kyle T. Heffner, Jenny Lin, Tom Nagel and Danny Trejo in the Zombie film The Burning Dead.
Francis Stewart Leland Lyons (1923–1983) was a historian of nineteenth-century Ireland.
Lyons was born in Derry, Northern Ireland, in 1923, but soon moved to Boyle in County Roscommon where his father was a bank official. Educated locally, he won a scholarship to Tunbridge Wells. He later attended The High School and Trinity College, Dublin, where he was elected a scholar in Modern History and Political Science in 1943.
He was a lecturer in history at Hull University and at Trinity College, Dublin, before becoming the founding Professor of Modern History at Kent University in 1964, serving also as Master of Eliot College from 1969 to 1972.
Lyons became Provost of Trinity College, Dublin, in 1974, but relinquished the post in 1981 to concentrate on writing. His work Charles Stewart Parnell won the Heinemann Prize in 1978. He won the Christopher Ewart-Biggs Memorial Prize and the Wolfson Literary Prize for History for his book Culture and Anarchy in Ireland, 1890-1939, published in 1979. He was awarded honorary doctorates by five universities and was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and of the British Academy and was Visiting Professor at Princeton University. His principal works also include Ireland Since the Famine, the standard university textbook for Irish history from the mid-19th to late-20th century, and a biography of Charles Stewart Parnell.
