An outstanding documentary series following the fortunes of Australian and New Zealand forces through World War 2
2011 marked the 70th anniversary of Australia’s first major battles of the Second World War. These actions and campaigns were fought in the Middle East and the Mediterranean where the three Australian services were continuously in action throughout 1941.
The second year of the war had begun with a series of impressive British and Commonwealth successes against the Italians in Libya. Australian troops led the advance. But a rapid German offensive quickly reversed these early victories. All that stopped the Germans’ march on Egypt was the defiant garrison at Tobruk.
For eight long months, surrounded by German and Italian forces, the men of the Tobruk garrison, mostly Australians, withstood tank attacks, artillery barrages, and daily bombings. They endured the desert’s searing heat, the bitterly cold nights, and hellish dust storms. They lived in dug-outs, caves, and crevasses.
The defenders of Tobruk did not surrender, they did not retreat. Their determination, bravery, and humour, combined with the aggressive tactics of their commanders, became a source of inspiration during some of the war’s darkest days. In so doing, they achieved lasting fame as the “Rats of Tobruk”.

Welcome to Africa!
November 1941. Days before the Siege of Tobruk was lifted. Since the end of January 1941, Axis forces have laid siege to Tobruk after British forces captured it from the Italians. After the initial British capture of Tobruk, the recently arrived German Africa Corps (DAK - Deutches Afrikakorps), under the command of Lieutenant-General Erwin Rommel, drove the Allies back across Cyrenaica to the Egyptian border, leaving Tobruk isolated and under siege. German forces are now closing in on a British held fortress near the port of Tobruk during the final stages of the 241-days long siege of Tobruk. Allied forces has since the arrival of the German Africa Corps been making their way to relieve the British forces trapped and under siege in Tobruk. The first wave of German attackers are about to assault the fortress. A second wave of German reinforcements are kept in reserve only to be utilized in case wave one fails.
This video was made using the Call of Duty 2 Mod for Men of War Assault Squad 2 Gameplay.

It was based on an actual mission in which British Troops & a group of German-Jewish commandos went across the Africa desert to blow up Rommel' s fuel bunkers which supplied gas for his drive the Suez Canal.
Rick West, a german Veteran of Rommel' s Africa Korps who survived the actual 1942 attack, served as a technical adviser on the film.
In fact, the real mission was a fiasco but did a little damage.

Tobruk
Tobruk or Tubruq (/təˈbrʊk, toʊ-/;Arabic: طبرق Ṭubruq; also transliterated as Tóbruch, Tobruch, Tobruck and Tubruk) is a port city on Libya's eastern Mediterranean coast, near the border with Egypt. It is the capital of the Butnan District (formerly Tobruk District) and has a population of 120,000 (2011 est.).
In September 2014 the internationally recognized government of Libya relocated to a Greek car ferry in Tobruk harbor. In October 2014 they again re-located, to a hotel named Dar al-Salam also known as the Al Masira Hotel in Tobruk. In November 2014 that government was declared illegal by Libya's highest court.
Tobruk was the site of an ancient Greek colony and, later, of a Roman fortress guarding the frontier of Cyrenaica. Over the centuries, Tobruk also served as a waystation along the coastal caravan route. By 1911, Tobruk had become an Italian military post, but during World War II, Allied forces, mainly the Australian 6th Division, took Tobruk on 22 January 1941. The Australian 9th Division ("The Rats of Tobruk") pulled back to Tobruk to avoid encirclement after actions at Er Regima and Mechili and reached Tobruk on 9 April 1941 where prolonged fighting against German and Italian forces followed. Although the siege was lifted by Operation Crusader in November 1941, a renewed offensive by Rommel the following year resulted in Tobruk being captured in June 1942 and held by the Axis forces until November 1942, when it was recaptured by the Allies. Rebuilt after World War II, Tobruk was later expanded during the 1960s to include a port terminal linked by an oil pipeline to the Sarir oil field.

The Rats of Tobruk
The Rats of Tobruk was the name given to the soldiers of the garrison who held the Libyan port of Tobruk against the Afrika Corps, during the Siege of Tobruk in World War II. The siege started on 10 April 1941 and was finally relieved at the end of November.
Between April and August 1941, around 14,000 Australian soldiers were besieged in Tobruk by a German–Italian army commanded by General Erwin Rommel. The garrison, commanded by Lieutenant General Leslie Morshead, consisted of the 9th Australian Division (20th, 24th, and 26th Brigades), the 18th Brigade of the 7th Australian Division, four regiments of British artillery, and some Indian troops.
Origins of the name
In what proved to be a propaganda mis-step, Lord Haw-Haw derisively referred to the Garrison as "poor desert rats of Tobruk" during radio broadcasts. This was probably mostly due to two factors:

2011 marked the 70th anniversary of Australia’s first major battles of the Second World War. These actions and campaigns were fought in the Middle East and the Mediterranean where the three Australian services were continuously in action throughout 1941.
The second year of the war had begun with a series of impressive British and Commonwealth successes against the Italians in Libya. Australian troops led the advance. But a rapid German offensive quickly reversed these early victories. All that stopped the Germans’ march on Egypt was the defiant garrison at Tobruk.
For eight long months, surrounded by German and Italian forces, the men of the Tobruk garrison, mostly Australians, withstood tank attacks, artillery barrages, and daily bombings. They endured the desert’s searing heat, the bitterly cold nights, and hellish dust storms. They lived in dug-outs, caves, and crevasses.
The defenders of Tobruk did not surrender, they did not retreat. Their determination, bravery, and humour, combined with the aggressive tactics of their commanders, became a source of inspiration during some of the war’s darkest days. In so doing, they achieved lasting fame as the “Rats of Tobruk”.

November 1941. Days before the Siege of Tobruk was lifted. Since the end of January 1941, Axis forces have laid siege to Tobruk after British forces captured it from the Italians. After the initial British capture of Tobruk, the recently arrived German Africa Corps (DAK - Deutches Afrikakorps), under the command of Lieutenant-General Erwin Rommel, drove the Allies back across Cyrenaica to the Egyptian border, leaving Tobruk isolated and under siege. German forces are now closing in on a British held fortress near the port of Tobruk during the final stages of the 241-days long siege of Tobruk. Allied forces has since the arrival of the German Africa Corps been making their way to relieve the British forces trapped and under siege in Tobruk. The first wave of German attackers are about to assault the fortress. A second wave of German reinforcements are kept in reserve only to be utilized in case wave one fails.

Rick West, a german Veteran of Rommel' s Africa Korps who survived the actual 1942 attack, served as a technical adviser on the film.
In fact, the real mission was a fiasco but did a little damage.
