I attended the Niles Canyon Railway's Spring Wildflower excursions on
April 3rd, 2016. Power for the train that day featured SP 1423 and
Clover Valley #4, the first time I've seen the #4 in action since
Winter Rail 2013.
I rode the first train of the day and chased the second and third runs
through the canyon, catching them at Brightside and Farwell.

This is a brief video featuring Southern Pacific Steam Locomotive number 2472 pulling some "Springtime Steam" Specials on the Niles Canyon Railway near Fremont, California. 2472 is a P-8 class "Pacific" 4-6-2 type locomotive, built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in January of 1921. It was delivered to the Southern Pacific Railroad in April of that year. Since that time, 2472 pulled fast passenger trains for the SP. After being retired in 1958, it was donated to the city of San Mateo where it was displayed in a park. In 1976, a group of enthusiasts got together to restore 2472. Since the early 1990's, the locomotive has been throughout much of California in excursion service. Since 2008, SP 2472 has been running at the Niles Canyon Railway on select weekends every year. I then chased it back down the canyon from Sunol to Niles with Western Pacific GP7 #713 on the point. The train looked really nice and the power for the train made it a worth while railfanning experience. On September 7th of 2015 the Golden Gate Railroad Museum ran their final steam excursion on the Niles Canyon Railway. This video was a great pleasure to film and edit and we look forward to what GGRM has in store for the future!

The Niles Canyon Railway's Steam operations are quite impressive, however Steamfest was a whole new type of awesome. There were 5 steam locomotives, 2 of which were visiting from other areas. Both the West and East lines were seeing trains and the double header put on quite a show. I was very happy to see people out enjoying the engines and will be there all but 2 of the days to enjoy it more. This video showcases Santa Cruz Portland Cement #2 and Quincy Railroad #2 Double Heading on the West Line. The following parts will show the Robert Dollar #3, Clover Valley #4 and Mason County #7. (Watch in HD) On June 7th-15th, 2014, Niles Canyon Railway hosted Steamfest 2014. On Friday, June 13th, 2014, Niles Canyon Railway held its last weekday run of Steamfest 2014, the quintuple header. The quintuple header was the main attraction to railfans because this was the first time Niles Canyon Railway hosted a "Quintuple Header" Event. Normally, it would be a "Quadruple Header", but in this case, due to the recent restoration completion of Clover Valley Lumber Co #4, a 2-6-6-2T Mallet, Niles Canyon Railway hosted a Quintuple Header. Also, normally Granite Rock #10, a Porter 0-6-0T located at California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, CA would be taking part of this event, but crews revealed thinning of the lower firebox sheets during its inspection on the locomotive, so that will take even more time to repair. Instead, Santa Cruz Portland Cement #2 "Chiggen", a Porter 0-4-0T from Davenport, CA took the place of Granite Rock #10 while it's undergoing restoration at California State Railroad Museum. Our cameras were on duty for the whole day recording every single aspect of this spectacular event. Join us as the train makes spectacular runbys and and views from inside the train as it strolls along the scenic Niles Canyon.

Niles Canyon Railway
The Niles Canyon Railway (NCRy) is a heritage railway running through Niles Canyon, between Sunol and the Niles district of Fremont in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area, in California, USA. The railway is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Niles Canyon Transcontinental Railroad Historic District. The railroad is operated and maintained by the Pacific Locomotive Association which preserves, restores and operates historic railroad equipment. The NCRy features public excursions with both steam and diesel locomotives along a well-preserved portion of the First Transcontinental Railroad. The Golden Gate Railroad Museum moved its collection from San Francisco to the NCRy in 2007 for storage and limited operations after their home at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard was shutdown for redevelopment.
History
The Niles Canyon Railway operates along a portion of the First Transcontinental Railroad constructed in the 1860s. The rail line through Niles Canyon was amongst the earliest to be built in California and provided the first rail connection between San Francisco Bay and the rest of the nation.

The Niles Canyon Railway's Steam operations are quite impressive, however Steamfest was a whole new type of awesome. There were 5 steam locomotives, 2 of which were visiting from other areas. Both the West and East lines were seeing trains and the double header put on quite a show. I was very happy to see people out enjoying the engines and will be there all but 2 of the days to enjoy it more. This video showcases Santa Cruz Portland Cement #2 and Quincy Railroad #2 Double Heading on the West Line. The following parts will show the Robert Dollar #3, Clover Valley #4 and Mason County #7. (Watch in HD) On June 7th-15th, 2014, Niles Canyon Railway hosted Steamfest 2014. On Friday, June 13th, 2014, Niles Canyon Railway held its last weekday run of Steamfest 2014, the quintuple header. The quintuple header was the main attraction to railfans because this was the first time Niles Canyon Railway hosted a "Quintuple Header" Event. Normally, it would be a "Quadruple Header", but in this case, due to the recent restoration completion of Clover Valley Lumber Co #4, a 2-6-6-2T Mallet, Niles Canyon Railway hosted a Quintuple Header. Also, normally Granite Rock #10, a Porter 0-6-0T located at California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, CA would be taking part of this event, but crews revealed thinning of the lower firebox sheets during its inspection on the locomotive, so that will take even more time to repair. Instead, Santa Cruz Portland Cement #2 "Chiggen", a Porter 0-4-0T from Davenport, CA took the place of Granite Rock #10 while it's undergoing restoration at California State Railroad Museum. Our cameras were on duty for the whole day recording every single aspect of this spectacular event. Join us as the train makes spectacular runbys and and views from inside the train as it strolls along the scenic Niles Canyon.
