On Monday, November 28 2011, I covered the Canadian Friends of Hebrew University's "Key of Knowledge" award ceremony for acclaimed award-winning film producer, Jake Eberts, who is spearheading the production of Jerusalem the Movie. This will be an IMAX documentary showcasing the ancient history of diversity inside the "City of Peace."
Writing for the Westmount Examiner, I had the opportunity to interview Eberts about his experience living in Westmount as a university student.

"Eberts was born in Montreal, Quebec, and studied chemical engineering at the city's McGill University. After graduating in 1962, he designed and built gas liquefaction plants for the French company Air Liquide, but soon tired of the job and enrolled at Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts. Emerging in 1966 with a master's in business administration, he worked in New York, on Wall Street and then at Oppenheimer and Co, an investment bank which transferred him to its London office, where he was promoted to be managing director.
However, Eberts soon amassed considerable personal debts which forced him to sell his house. A fellow banker, Dimitri de Gunzberg, was looking for investment in the development and production of an animated film version of Richard Adams's popular novel, Watership Down. Eberts came on board and, the year before the movie was released in 1978, formed Goldcrest Films.
It is a mark of the wide-ranging success of Jake Eberts, founder of the once-mighty Goldcrest Films, who has died aged 71 after suffering from cancer, that few headline writers summing up his life could agree on his most notable producing credit. Was it Chariots of Fire (1981), Gandhi (1982) or The Killing Fields (1984)? The Name of the Rose (1986), Driving Miss Daisy (1989) or Dances With Wolves (1990)? Easier instead to herald him as the man whose films won a staggering 37 Oscars." - The Guardian

Jerusalem is a 2013 documentary film about the ancient city of Jerusalem. It was produced by Cosmic Picture and Arcane Pictures and distributed by National Geographic Cinema Ventures in IMAX and giant screen theatres.
Background and film synopsis
The film is narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch. It had an US$8 million production budget and some of the profits from the distribution of the film are to be given to projects in the city that promote co-existence.
A stated aim of the 45-minute film is to show the diversity of Jerusalem and to promote understanding of the different cultures in Jerusalem.
The film-makers were given special access to holy sites and several of the little-known parts of the city. They were permitted to film aerial shots of areas normally treated as no-fly zones. The filmmakers formed an advisory panel that includes academic and theological experts. Jerusalem presents the city through the eyes of three teenagers – a Jew, Christian and Muslim - and the archaeologist Dr Jodi Magness, of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The teenagers are Farah Ammouri, Nadia Tadros, and Revital Zacharie. The film shows how the teenagers live in Jerusalem, where they go and how the city is important to them. Dr Magness uses archaeology to understand the past in Jerusalem.
The Film-makers
Jerusalem was a joint production between Cosmic Picture based in New York City, United States, and Arcane Pictures based in London, United Kingdom. Jake Eberts was the executive producer until his death in September 2012. His credits include Chariots of Fire, Gandhi, and Dances with Wolves. He described the city of Jerusalem as, “The beating heart of our world today.” Jerusalem was produced by Taran Davies, producer of Journey to Mecca, and George Duffield, the producer of The End of the Line. Daniel Ferguson, a Canadian filmmaker whose credits include Journey to Mecca, was producer, writer and director. Dominic Cunningham Reid, a producer of Journey to Mecca, is also an executive producer. The Director of Photography was Reed Smoot.
Reviews
The Washington Post described the panoramic photography as "at once awe-inspiring and intimate" and said watching the film "may be as close as a person can get to praying at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Western Wall, without actually going there”. It was described by NBC as "an eye-popping travelogue", and "sure to enthral and educate" in The Washington Times.

Jake Eberts
Jake Eberts, OC (July 10, 1941 – September 6, 2012) was a Canadian film producer, executive and financier. He was known for risk-taking and producing a consistently high caliber of movies including such award-winning titles as Chariots of Fire (1981, uncredited), Gandhi (1982), Dances with Wolves (1990), and the successful animated feature Chicken Run (2000).
Life and career
Eberts was born John David Eberts in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the son of Elizabeth (MacDougall), an interior decorator, and Edmond Eberts, who worked for an aluminum manufacturer. Eberts grew up in Montreal and Arvida. He attended Bishop's College School in Lennoxville, Quebec and graduated from McGill University (Bachelor of Chemical Engineering 1962) and Harvard Business School (MBA 1966). Eberts' working career began as a start-up engineer for L'Air Liquide in Spain, Italy, Germany and France. He then spent three years as a Wall Street investor. He moved to London, England in 1971, where he joined Oppenheimer & Co., rising to the position of managing director of the UK brokerage and investment company in 1976.

Kevin Costner
Kevin Michael Costner (born January 18, 1955) is an American actor, film director, producer, musician, and singer. He has won two Academy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, and one Emmy Award, and has been nominated for three BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Awards. In 2013, he was awarded the Honorary César.
Costner's notable roles include Eliot Ness in The Untouchables, Crash Davis in Bull Durham, Ray Kinsella in Field of Dreams, Lt. John J. Social responsibility
Social responsibility is an ethical framework which suggests that an entity, be it an organization or individual, has an obligation to act for the benefit of society at large. Social responsibility is a duty every individual has to perform so as to maintain a balance between the economy and the ecosystems. A trade-off may exist between economic development, in the material sense, and the welfare of the society and environment, though this has been challenged by many reports over the past decade. Social responsibility means sustaining the equilibrium between the two. It pertains not only to business organizations but also to everyone whose any action impacts the environment. This responsibility can be passive, by avoiding engaging in socially harmful acts, or active, by performing activities that directly advance social goals.
Businesses can use ethical decision making to secure their businesses by making decisions that allow for government agencies to minimize their involvement with the corporation. For instance if a company follows the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines for emissions on dangerous pollutants and even goes an extra step to get involved in the community and address those concerns that the public might have; they would be less likely to have the EPA investigate them for environmental concerns. "A significant element of current thinking about privacy, however, stresses "self-regulation" rather than market or government mechanisms for protecting personal information". According to some experts, most rules and regulations are formed due to public outcry, which threatens profit maximization and therefore the well-being of the shareholder, and that if there is not outcry there often will be limited regulation.

Corporate social responsibility
Corporate social responsibility (CSR, also called corporate conscience, corporate citizenship or responsible business) is a form of corporate self-regulation integrated into a business model. CSR policy functions as a self-regulatory mechanism whereby a business monitors and ensures its active compliance with the spirit of the law, ethical standards and national or international norms. With some models, a firm's implementation of CSR goes beyond compliance and engages in "actions that appear to further some social good, beyond the interests of the firm and that which is required by law." The aim is to increase long-term profits through positive public relations, high ethical standards to reduce business and legal risk, and shareholder trust by taking responsibility for corporate actions. On Monday, November 28 2011, I covered the Canadian Friends of Hebrew University's "Key of Knowledge" award ceremony for acclaimed award-winning film producer, Jake Eberts, who is spearheading the production of Jerusalem the Movie. This will be an IMAX documentary showcasing the ancient history of diversity inside the "City of Peace." Jerusalem is a 2013 documentary film about the ancient city of Jerusalem. It was produced by Cosmic Picture and Arcane Pictures and distributed by National Geographic Cinema Ventures in IMAX and giant screen theatres. Background and film synopsis The film is narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch. It had an US$8 million production budget and some of the profits from the distribution of the film are to be given to projects in the city that promote co-existence. A stated aim of the 45-minute film is to show the diversity of Jerusalem and to promote understanding of the different cultures in Jerusalem. On Monday, November 28 2011, I covered the Canadian Friends of Hebrew University's "Key of Knowledge" award ceremony for acclaimed award-winning film producer, Jake Eberts, who is spearheading the production of Jerusalem the Movie. This will be an IMAX documentary showcasing the ancient history of diversity inside the "City of Peace."
Writing for the Westmount Examiner, I had the opportunity to interview Eberts about his experience living in Westmount as a university student.

"Eberts was born in Montreal, Quebec, and studied chemical engineering at the city's McGill University. After graduating in 1962, he designed and built gas liquefaction plants for the French company Air Liquide, but soon tired of the job and enrolled at Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts. Emerging in 1966 with a master's in business administration, he worked in New York, on Wall Street and then at Oppenheimer and Co, an investment bank which transferred him to its London office, where he was promoted to be managing director.
However, Eberts soon amassed considerable personal debts which forced him to sell his house. A fellow banker, Dimitri de Gunzberg, was looking for investment in the development and production of an animated film version of Richard Adams's popular novel, Watership Down. Eberts came on board and, the year before the movie was released in 1978, formed Goldcrest Films.
It is a mark of the wide-ranging success of Jake Eberts, founder of the once-mighty Goldcrest Films, who has died aged 71 after suffering from cancer, that few headline writers summing up his life could agree on his most notable producing credit. Was it Chariots of Fire (1981), Gandhi (1982) or The Killing Fields (1984)? The Name of the Rose (1986), Driving Miss Daisy (1989) or Dances With Wolves (1990)? Easier instead to herald him as the man whose films won a staggering 37 Oscars." - The Guardian

Jerusalem is a 2013 documentary film about the ancient city of Jerusalem. It was produced by Cosmic Picture and Arcane Pictures and distributed by National Geographic Cinema Ventures in IMAX and giant screen theatres.
Background and film synopsis
The film is narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch. It had an US$8 million production budget and some of the profits from the distribution of the film are to be given to projects in the city that promote co-existence.
A stated aim of the 45-minute film is to show the diversity of Jerusalem and to promote understanding of the different cultures in Jerusalem.
The film-makers were given special access to holy sites and several of the little-known parts of the city. They were permitted to film aerial shots of areas normally treated as no-fly zones. The filmmakers formed an advisory panel that includes academic and theological experts. Jerusalem presents the city through the eyes of three teenagers – a Jew, Christian and Muslim - and the archaeologist Dr Jodi Magness, of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The teenagers are Farah Ammouri, Nadia Tadros, and Revital Zacharie. The film shows how the teenagers live in Jerusalem, where they go and how the city is important to them. Dr Magness uses archaeology to understand the past in Jerusalem.

Jerusalem was a joint production between Cosmic Picture based in New York City, United States, and Arcane Pictures based in London, United Kingdom. Jake Eberts was the executive producer until his death in September 2012. His credits include Chariots of Fire, Gandhi, and Dances with Wolves. He described the city of Jerusalem as, “The beating heart of our world today.” Jerusalem was produced by Taran Davies, producer of Journey to Mecca, and George Duffield, the producer of The End of the Line. Daniel Ferguson, a Canadian filmmaker whose credits include Journey to Mecca, was producer, writer and director. Dominic Cunningham Reid, a producer of Journey to Mecca, is also an executive producer. The Director of Photography was Reed Smoot.
Reviews
The Washington Post described the panoramic photography as "at once awe-inspiring and intimate" and said watching the film "may be as close as a person can get to praying at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Western Wall, without actually going there”. It was described by NBC as "an eye-popping travelogue", and "sure to enthral and educate" in The Washington Times.

Played herein by John Neville, the baron is seen quelling a war that he himself started, flying into the stratosphere on the back of a cannonball, ballooning to the moon, exploring the innards of a volcano, being swallowed by a whale....In short, all of Munchausen's fabulous lies are here presented as "truth," played out in full view of nonplussed witnesses Eric Idle, Charles McKeown, Jack Purvis, and Sarah Polley. Fringe benefits include several loving medium shots of jaybird-naked Uma Thurman as Boticelli's Venus and an extended unbilled cameo by Robin Williams -- that is, by the head of Robin Williams -- as the King of the Moon. Filmed under considerable duress on a budget eventually exceeding 45 million dollars, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen never quite caught on with moviegoers, though it has enjoyed a lucrative afterlife on videocassette.

In this new comedy adventure, celebrated travel writer, Bill Bryson (Academy Award winner Robert Redford), instead of retiring to enjoy his loving and beautiful wife (Academy Award winner Emma Thompson), and large and happy family, challenges himself to hike the Appalachian Trail - 2,200 miles of America’s most unspoiled, spectacular and rugged countryside from Georgia to Maine. The peace and tranquility he hopes to find, though, is anything but, once he agrees to being accompanied by the only person he can find willing to join him on the trek - his long lost and former friend Katz (Academy Award nominee Nick Nolte), a down-on-his-luck serial philanderer who, after a lifetime of relying on his charm and wits to keep one step ahead of the law – sees the trip as a way to sneak out of paying some debts and sneak into one last adventure before its too late. The trouble is, the two have a completely different definition of the word, “adventure”. Now they're about to find out that when you push yourself to the edge, the real fun begins.

"Eberts was born in Montreal, Quebec, and studied chemical engineering at the city's McGill University. After graduating in 1962, he designed and built gas liquefaction plants for the French company Air Liquide, but soon tired of the job and enrolled at Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts. Emerging in 1966 with a master's in business administration, he worked in New York, on Wall Street and then at Oppenheimer and Co, an investment bank which transferred him to its London office, where he was promoted to be managing director.
However, Eberts soon amassed considerable personal debts which forced him to sell his house. A fellow banker, Dimitri de Gunzberg, was looking for investment in the development and production of an animated film version of Richard Adams's popular novel, Watership Down. Eberts came on board and, the year before the movie was released in 1978, formed Goldcrest Films.
It is a mark of the wide-ranging success of Jake Eberts, founder of the once-mighty Goldcrest Films, who has died aged 71 after suffering from cancer, that few headline writers summing up his life could agree on his most notable producing credit. Was it Chariots of Fire (1981), Gandhi (1982) or The Killing Fields (1984)? The Name of the Rose (1986), Driving Miss Daisy (1989) or Dances With Wolves (1990)? Easier instead to herald him as the man whose films won a staggering 37 Oscars." - The Guardian

Jerusalem is a 2013 documentary film about the ancient city of Jerusalem. It was produced by Cosmic Picture and Arcane Pictures and distributed by National Geographic Cinema Ventures in IMAX and giant screen theatres.
Background and film synopsis
The film is narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch. It had an US$8 million production budget and some of the profits from the distribution of the film are to be given to projects in the city that promote co-existence.
A stated aim of the 45-minute film is to show the diversity of Jerusalem and to promote understanding of the different cultures in Jerusalem.
The film-makers were given special access to holy sites and several of the little-known parts of the city. They were permitted to film aerial shots of areas normally treated as no-fly zones. The filmmakers formed an advisory panel that includes academic and theological experts. Jerusalem presents the city through the eyes of three teenagers – a Jew, Christian and Muslim - and the archaeologist Dr Jodi Magness, of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The teenagers are Farah Ammouri, Nadia Tadros, and Revital Zacharie. The film shows how the teenagers live in Jerusalem, where they go and how the city is important to them. Dr Magness uses archaeology to understand the past in Jerusalem.

Jake Eberts was the executive producer until his death in September 2012. His credits include Chariots of Fire, Gandhi, and Dances with Wolves. He described the city of Jerusalem as, “The beating heart of our world today.” Jerusalem was produced by Taran Davies, producer of Journey to Mecca, and George Duffield, the producer of The End of the Line. Daniel Ferguson, a Canadian filmmaker whose credits include Journey to Mecca, was producer, writer and director. Dominic Cunningham Reid, a producer of Journey to Mecca, is also an executive producer. The Director of Photography was Reed Smoot.
