Hunan Province (Chinese: 湖南; pinyin: Húnán; Hunanese: Shuangfeng, [ɣəu˩˧læ̃˩˧]; Changsha, [fu˩˧lã˩˧]) is a province of the People's Republic of China. It is located in South Central China, south of the middle course of the Yangtze River, and south of Lake Dongting (hence the name Hunan, which means "south of the lake"). Hunan is sometimes called for short and officially abbreviated as "湘" (pinyin: Xiāng), after the Xiang River which runs through the province.
Hunan borders Hubei Province in the north, Jiangxi Province to the east, Guangdong Province to the southeast, Guangxi Province to the southwest, Guizhou Province to the west, and Chongqing to the northwest. The provincial capital is Changsha.
Hunan's primeval forests were first occupied by the ancestors of the modern Miao, Tujia, Dong and Yao peoples. It entered the written history of China around 350 BC, when under the kings of the Zhou Dynasty, it became part of the State of Chu. After Qin conquered the Chu heartland in 278 BC, the region came under the control of Qin, and then the Han dynasty. At this time, and for hundreds of years thereafter, it was a magnet for migration of Han Chinese from the north, who displaced or assimilated the indigenous people, cleared forests and began farming rice in the valleys and plains. The agricultural colonization of the lowlands was carried out in part by the Han state, which managed river dikes to protect farmland from floods. To this day many of the small villages in Hunan are named after the Han families who settled there. Migration from the north was especially prevalent during the Eastern Jin Dynasty and the Southern and Northern Dynasties Periods, when nomadic invaders pushed these peoples south.

** Please expand the description box for itinerary & music details** www.instagram.com/timandglo September 2, 2014 To see a map of the TianMen Mountain Park and a cable car schedule, skip to 12:53. We spent most our last day in TianMen Mountain (TianMenShan) Park, which is a 30 minute cable car ride from downtown ZhangJiaJie City. But first we started the day by walking to WangQiaoTai, which is just behind ZhongTian International Youth Hostel. We visited WangQiaoTai each of the three days we were in WuLingYuan, and we got the best view on this day! It was soooo amazing! On a clear day, you can see all the way to bottom of the valley at the mountains’ base, and the depth is overwhelming and awe inspiring. Because it was clear, we decided to take a bus back to TianZiShan (where were the...
The journey started 5 months back. I never expected that this will turn out to be such a memorable and an amazing experience. It's rightly said: "It is better to see something once, than to hear about it a thousand times." www.instagram.com/timandglo August 29-30, 2014 We recently spent 4 days and 4 nights in Hunan Province. After flying into Zhangjiajie City late on a Friday night, we stayed at a hotel close to to the airport then took the 9:30 AM bus to Feng Huang Ancient Town. It took three hours in ideal driving conditions, blue skies and no traffic. We had a tight schedule for the trip, so we were only able to stay in Feng Huang for one night. But it was worth the 6-7 hour roundtrip bus ride! The town was almost deserted during the day, maybe because it was so hot out (90 degree Fahrenheit with little cloud coverage!). It was great to wander the town and have the river promenade and back alleyways all to ourselves! The ancient town completely transforms over night and it almost unrecognizable. The co...

The world’s highest and longest bridge with a glass bottom opened to crowds in Zhangjiajie, China on Saturday. The record breaking bridge is 430 metres (1,400 ft) long and hangs 300 metres (1,000 ft) above the earth, suspended between two mountain cliffs in Zhangjiajie park. The bridge is designed by Israeli architect Haim Dotan with visitors crossing 99 panels of clear glass to reach the opposite cliff. Eight hundred people can fit on the bridge at one time with only 8,000 allowed to cross the bridge each day. These are some samples of local river food in Fenghuang, in Hunan province of China. These fish, crabs, and shrimp come from the Tuo River. This is food that's more typical of the ethnic minority groups that have been classified as Miao.

Hello, lovelies! I'm back at it again with some leftover travel footage from the Hunan Province. My mom and I participated in a 6 day tour with 22 other lovely individuals. Although this looked all Chill on screen, it was actually a freaking workout! Sleep at 12am, wake up at 6am to get ready for the day's adventure. Hence the (Not So) in really small text in the thumbnail. We walked an average of 6 miles a day seeing all the breathtaking sites in the mountainous region of Zhang Jia JIe (张家界)aka the area where they shot AVATAR (the blue people). The mountains and the culture were beautiful. I hope you enjoy the footage...I pared down 20 minutes to less than 4 minutes! This was all shot on the iphone 6s. 'Fenghuang' is Chinese for 'Phoenix', Phoenix Ancient Town is so called as legend has it that two of these fabulous birds flew over it and found the town so beautiful that they hovered there, reluctant to leave. Top Things to do in China! I know that this is long overdue and that I haven't posted a video in a while, but seriously China!! Anyways, this list is less about the top attractions in China and more about the best ones. Moreover, it features the off the beaten path destinations in China as well. So what are the most incredible things to do in China. Here's my take: 10) Changsha and the Mao Zedong Staute (长沙和毛泽东雕像) This is crazy, in the capital of Hunan Province there's a giant statue of Mao Zedong that looks like something out of Mount Rushmore. Definitely a top thing to see in China. 9) Bifengxia Panda Base (碧峰峡大熊猫保护区) The Panda Center in Chengdu is a bit over-touristed. That's why it's a great option to head to Bifengxia on the edge of the village of Ya'an, and up to this amazing ...
We visit Nanjing, China to film the 20th episode of the Traveling for 20 Dollars a Day series. We ate tons of street food, hung out with locals, and thanks to Raven, my local friend and guide, we learned some local Nanjing dialect and uncovered hidden gems throughout the city. Also, Curtis is back! -----( $20 USD = 138 RMB )----- We met at Zhongshan Wharf (中山码头) and took the ferry to Pukou District(the oldest district in Nanjing). After enjoying some outdoor shenanigans, we had breakfast at the legendary Daxi Wonton (大喜馄饨摊). Later, we enjoyed a feast at Nanjing Dapaidang (南京大排档) on Hunan Road. In the afternoon, we walked around Xuanwu Lake (玄武湖) and caught a glimpse of the Ming Great Wall(明城墙). Next, we ventured over to Yihe Road(颐和路), then visited Librairie Avant-Garde(先锋书店五台山店), one...

Touted as the inspiration for James Cameron's Avatar home world (that movie with the sexy smurfs and therefore these mountains are also called the "Avatar Mountains") it was other-worldly and inspiring once you got passed the crowds and camera flashes... which was hard to do. ☑SUBSCRIBE ☑LIKE ☑SHARE ☐GET ON PLANE ______________________________________________ FOLLOW THE BEARD! ✩ Instagram - http://instagram.com/becausewecamp ✩ Blog/Website - http://www.becausewecamp.com ✩ FaceBook - https://www.facebook.com/becausewecamp ______________________________________________ Thank you for watching: A Foreigner's Guide ...
Fenghuang, a small ancient town on the Tuojiang River, in Chinese means 'Phoenix', the mythical bird of good omen and longevity that is consumed by fire to be re-born again from the flames. Feng Huang Cheng or Phoenix Town is so called as legend has it that two of these mythical birds flew over it and found it to be so wonderful that they grew reluctant to leave it; and so may you, as Fenghuang offers one of those fine glimpse of Old China.
