A diesel locomotive is a type of railway locomotive in which the prime mover is a diesel engine. Several types of diesel locomotive have been developed, differing mainly in the means by which mechanical power is conveyed to the driving wheels (drivers).
Early internal combustion engine-powered locomotives and railmotors used gasoline as their fuel. Soon after Dr. Rudolf Diesel patented his first compression ignition engine in 1892, it was considered for railway propulsion. Progress was slow, however, as several problems had to be overcome.
Power transmission was a primary concern. As opposed to steam and electric engines, internal combustion engines work efficiently only within a limited range of turning frequencies. In light vehicles, this could be overcome by a clutch. In heavy railway vehicles, mechanical transmission never worked well or wore out too soon. Experience with early gasoline powered locomotives and railcars was valuable for the development of diesel traction. One step towards diesel-electric transmission was the petrol-electric vehicle, such as the Weitzer railmotor (1903 ff.)

Friends in this I have explained how a diesel locomotive works, and what are the main parts of the diesel locomotives and there uses . in this video you will know to know about traction motors and how diesel generators works .
In many parts of the world, diesel-electric locomotives are the primary hauling power for trains. A diesel-electric locomotive is similar to a road vehicle in having an internal combustion engine as the primary source of power. However, the similarity ends there. Internal combustion engines operate efficiently only in a narrow rpm band. For a rail locomotive hauling over 1000 tons of loads, extracting the required torque from an internal combustion engine would require an impractical number of gears. Therefore, a diesel-electric locomotive produces electricity to run its traction motors. The mechanics involved are explained in this video “How diesel-electric locomotives work?”
They're not the fastest trains in the country, but they still fly all over the U.S! It's Fast Diesel Trains! Come along for a look at several passenger and some freight trains pulled by diesels flying down the track! I wasn't able to record the speeds of all the trains, but as good as I can estimate, these trains are all moving in the range of 60 to 90 miles per hour, with many of the passenger trains toward the upper end of that range. First made in 1937 by General Motors and then repackaged for the WWII war effort, DIESEL THE MODERN POWER tells the story of the development and principles of the diesel engine. The film uses live action and animation to show how the diesel engine works, and live action footage of Sherman tanks, streamlined locomotives, switching engines, ships, and more. The film begins with an historical overview that includes a brief lesson on how to make fire, including two stones, rubbing pieces of wood, and even the "fire syringe" that was used by the people of Southeast Asia. The syringe is used to demonstrate the operation of a piston in an engine. At 14:30, 600 hp diesel engine are seen at the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago. Well 2013 has certainly been no disappointment when it comes to steam, but when it comes to those thrashing clagging diesel locomotives of yesteryear, 2013 has been kind enough to deliver it's fair share of fantastic moments too. With eruptions of highly carcinogenic clouds of smoke and deafening growls and screaming turbochargers, the year has been packed with incredible amounts of entertainment, from locomotives such as the age old Class 37's, Class 47's and the unchallenged Class 55 Deltics, to the more mundane Class 56 Grids which have been deafening the UK countryside with it's unmistakable scream. Even a Class 14 'Teddy Bear' gets a mention in this video as it piles down the middle of a street in Preston with a plume of grey smoke! Environmentalists, look away now because the next 2...
