This clip features Peter Tork, with brief cameo's from Bob Rafelson, Jack Nicholson and Dennis Hopper.
Head is a 1968 psychedelic comedy-adventure major motion picture, starring TV group The Monkees (in credit order: Peter Tork, Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz and Michael Nesmith), and distributed by Columbia Pictures. It was written and produced by Bob Rafelson and Jack Nicholson, and directed by Rafelson.
During production, the working title for the film was "Changes", which was later the name of an unrelated album by the Monkees. A rough cut of the film was previewed for audiences in Los Angeles in the summer of '68 under the name of "Movee Untitled".
The film featured Victor Mature as "The Big Victor" and other cameo appearances by Nicholson, Teri Garr, Carol Doda, Annette Funicello, Frank Zappa, Sonny Liston, Timothy Carey and Ray Nitschke. Also appearing on screen in brief non-speaking parts are Dennis Hopper and Toni Basil.

In our second exclusive video interview with Richard Rogers, the British architect reveals that key elements of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, which he designed together with Italian architect Renzo Piano, were strongly influenced by the radical thinking of the 1960s.
The Centre Pompidou was born out of a competition launched by the French government in 1970 and was completed in 1977. However, Rogers cites the political unrest in Paris in the previous decade, when protesting students and workers came close to overthrowing the government in 1968, as a key influence.
"That moment nearly changed history, certainly for Europe," Rogers says. "It looked as though there would be a revolution. In fact, it didn’t happen. But we captured some of it in the building."
He adds: "It was a highly active period of politics, and you could argue that it was a part of the concept [for the building]. This was a dynamic period, a period of change, but we wanted to catch what was going on at the moment."
The Centre Pompidou is also linked to 1968 by its name. Originally called the Centre Beaubourg, the building was renamed when Georges Pompidou, who was prime minister of France when the protests kicked off and became president after Charles de Gaulle was forced to resign, died during construction of the building.
"It is said in France that Pompidou had a plane revving up because he thought he would lose the war against the students, the intellectuals, and the workers," Rogers says.
In Roger's and Piano's original design, the main facade of the building featured a large screen, which would have displayed information from other arts and cultural institutions around the world. But this was scrapped after Pompidou's death for political reasons.
"The façade on the building, if you look more carefully, was very much about the riots and very much about Vietnam," Rogers says. "We had it all going very well until Pompidou died and Giscard [the subsequent president of France] came in and sunk it with no hands. He said: 'it is a political weapon, I don’t want it.' So that died."
Rogers says that the idea of the putting all the structure and services on the outside of the building to maximise the flexibility of the internal space also has its roots in the volatility of this period of history.
"We wanted to make a building that was clearly of our period, which caught the zeitgeist of the now," he says.
"The one thing we knew about this age is it's all about change, if there’s one constant, it’s change. So we said that we’d make massive floors, which were the size of two football pitches with no vertical interruptions, structure on the outside, mechanical service on the outside, people's movement on the outside and theoretically you can do anything you want on those floors."
"We didn’t say where the museum should go, where the library should go, and of course, the library changed radically because when we started there were books and by the time we finished it books were almost finished because of I.T. So again that’s about change."
The radical design of the building was initially met with hostility, Rogers claims.
"It was vilified whilst we were designing it from the first day onwards," he says. "Nobody said one kind word until it opened and when people started to queue up."
He reflects: "I remember once standing outside on a rainy day and there was a small woman with an umbrella who offered me shelter. We started talking, as one does in the rain, and she asked: 'what do you think of this building?'"
"Stupidly, I said that I designed it and she hit me on the head with her umbrella. That was just typical of the general reaction of the people, especially during the design and construction stage. [People thought we were] destroying their beautiful Paris.'"

Peter Tork
Peter Tork (born Peter Halsten Thorkelson, February 13, 1942) is an American musician and actor, best known as the keyboardist and bass guitarist of the Monkees.
Early life
Tork was born at the former Doctors Hospital, in Washington, D.C. Although he was born in the District of Columbia in 1942, many news articles incorrectly report him as born in 1944 in New York City, which was the date and place given on early Monkees press releases. He is the son of Virginia Hope (née Straus) and Halsten John Thorkelson, an economics professor at the University of Connecticut. His paternal grandfather was of Norwegian descent, while his mother was of half German Jewish and half British Isles ancestry. He began studying piano at the age of nine, showing an aptitude for music by learning to play several different instruments, including the banjo and both acoustic bass and guitars. Tork attended Windham High School in Willimantic, Connecticut, and was a member of the first graduating class at E.O. Smith High School in Storrs, Connecticut. He attended Carleton College before he moved to New York City, where he became part of the folk music scene in Greenwich Village during the first half of the 1960s. While there, he befriended other up-and-coming musicians such as Stephen Stills.

Head is a 1968 psychedelic comedy-adventure major motion picture, starring TV group The Monkees (in credit order: Peter Tork, Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz and Michael Nesmith), and distributed by Columbia Pictures. It was written and produced by Bob Rafelson and Jack Nicholson, and directed by Rafelson. During production, the working title for the film was "Changes", which was later the name of an unrelated album by the Monkees. In our second exclusive video interview with Richard Rogers, the British architect reveals that key elements of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, which he designed together with Italian architect Renzo Piano, were strongly influenced by the radical thinking of the 1960s.
The Centre Pompidou was born out of a competition launched by the French government in 1970 and was completed in 1977. However, Rogers cites the political unrest in Paris in the previous decade, when protesting students and workers came close to overthrowing the government in 1968, as a key influence.
"That moment nearly changed history, certainly for Europe," Rogers says. "It looked as though there would be a revolution. In fact, it didn’t happen. But we captured some of it in the building."
He adds: "It was a highly active period of politics, and you could argue that it was a part of the concept [for the building]. This was a dynamic period, a period of change, but we wanted to catch what was going on at the moment."
The Centre Pompidou is also linked to 1968 by its name. Originally called the Centre Beaubourg, the building was renamed when Georges Pompidou, who was prime minister of France when the protests kicked off and became president after Charles de Gaulle was forced to resign, died during construction of the building.
"It is said in France that Pompidou had a plane revving up because he thought he would lose the war against the students, the intellectuals, and the workers," Rogers says.
In Roger's and Piano's original design, the main facade of the building featured a large screen, which would have displayed information from other arts and cultural institutions around the world. But this was scrapped after Pompidou's death for political reasons.
"The façade on the building, if you look more carefully, was very much about the riots and very much about Vietnam," Rogers says. Rogers says that the idea of the putting all the structure and services on the outside of the building to maximise the flexibility of the internal space also has its roots in the volatility of this period of history.
"We wanted to make a building that was clearly of our period, which caught the zeitgeist of the now," he says.

In our second exclusive video interview with Richard Rogers, the British architect reveals that key elements of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, which he designed together with Italian architect Renzo Piano, were strongly influenced by the radical thinking of the 1960s.
The Centre Pompidou was born out of a competition launched by the French government in 1970 and was completed in 1977. However, Rogers cites the political unrest in Paris in the previous decade, when protesting students and workers came close to overthrowing the government in 1968, as a key influence.
"That moment nearly changed history, certainly for Europe," Rogers says. "It looked as though there would be a revolution. In fact, it didn’t happen. But we captured some of it in the building."
He adds: "It was a highly active period of politics, and you could argue that it was a part of the concept [for the building]. This was a dynamic period, a period of change, but we wanted to catch what was going on at the moment."
The Centre Pompidou is also linked to 1968 by its name. Originally called the Centre Beaubourg, the building was renamed when Georges Pompidou, who was prime minister of France when the protests kicked off and became president after Charles de Gaulle was forced to resign, died during construction of the building.
"It is said in France that Pompidou had a plane revving up because he thought he would lose the war against the students, the intellectuals, and the workers," Rogers says.
In Roger's and Piano's original design, the main facade of the building featured a large screen, which would have displayed information from other arts and cultural institutions around the world. But this was scrapped after Pompidou's death for political reasons.
"The façade on the building, if you look more carefully, was very much about the riots and very much about Vietnam," Rogers says. Scorsese has never done a more compelling job of getting inside someone's head as he does in one of the concluding passages of "GoodFellas," in which he follows one day in the life of Henry Hill, as he tries to do a cocaine deal, cook dinner for his family, placate his mistress and deal with the suspicion that he's being followed.
This is the sequence that imprinted me so deeply with the mood of the film. It's not a straightforward narrative passage, and it has little to do with plot; it's about the feeling of walls closing in, and the guilty feeling that the walls are deserved. The counterpoint is a sense of duty, of compulsion; the drug deal must be made, but the kid brother also must be picked up, and the sauce must be stirred, and meanwhile, Henry's life is careening wildly out of control.

Virtual reality provides new opportunities for user interactions with computer applications. The process of designing a comprehensive interaction paradigm will require a significant amount of consideration and development. My work outlines a few beginning design considerations related to zones for content, types of interaction, and interface design methods. With a mass of resources and time including teams of developers, I have no doubt that a full virtual reality operating system could be created using existing technology.

7. I don’t mean any disrespect to Doom & Quake as they were obviously enormous steps for video games and extremely popular as “killer apps” in their own right. I just mean to point out that productivity tools became the main reason the general public decided to buy PCs.
9. It can also be said that Ivan Sutherland’s “Sketchpad” (1963) or Douglas Engelbart’s “On-line System” (1968) were GUIs, but I am referring to the window, icon, menu, pointer (WIMP) desktop style GUI for which Xerox PARC’s Alto was first.
18. The idea of associating persistent menu items or actions with body parts is to take advantage of motor memory in relation with proprioception.
22. I’m getting these numbers from the Oculus Unity integration package, in which the cameras’ field of view is 106.09° vertically and 94.16° horizontally for the DK2. I realize that it is marketed colloquially as having about a 100° field of view, but I assume this is just an estimated median between the two that is easier to refer to. For content and ergonomics, I would prefer to err on the side of safety and go with the smaller circular diameter.
24. The reality of this near area is tricky, as it’s a sort of gradient of discomfort. Within that nearest meter, how much strain is too much strain is a matter of opinion.
43. Microsoft has not yet detailed specifications for the hololens head mounted display. However, much can be extrapolated from the technologies in use and the experiences of others. It is very possible that a later consumer version may have higher resolutions, wider fields of view, and/or ways to display black pixels with varying opacity, but the current demo version appears to have the properties explained in the video.
46. This interface previsualization was created for an upcoming product. However, I have omitted most of the interface and features at the request of the creators since it is still in development.
54. Gaming consoles are examples of computers that are constantly doing complex rendering, so it’s definitely possible with current tech. What I was thinking of is how you won’t have a video for your current desktop or many users would disable the “aero” transparency in Windows because it’s taxing to performance including frame rate. Since VR has to maintain upwards of 75-90 frames per second, much of the complex multitasking we’re used to may be curbed in these first years if it was being additionally represented as meshes and materials with lighting. It is still definitely possible, though.

Virtual reality provides new opportunities for user interactions with computer applications. The process of designing a comprehensive interaction paradigm will require a significant amount of consideration and development. My work outlines a few beginning design considerations related to zones for content, types of interaction, and interface design methods. With a mass of resources and time including teams of developers, I have no doubt that a full virtual reality operating system could be created using existing technology.
Selected Commentary:
7. I don’t mean any disrespect to Doom & Quake as they were obviously enormous steps for video games and extremely popular as “killer apps” in their own right. I just mean to point out that productivity tools became the main reason the general public decided to buy PCs.
9. It can also be said that Ivan Sutherland’s “Sketchpad” (1963) or Douglas Engelbart’s “On-line System” (1968) were GUIs, but I am referring to the window, icon, menu, pointer (WIMP) desktop style GUI for which Xerox PARC’s Alto was first.
18. The idea of associating persistent menu items or actions with body parts is to take advantage of motor memory in relation with proprioception.
22. I’m getting these numbers from the Oculus Unity integration package, in which the cameras’ field of view is 106.09° vertically and 94.16° horizontally for the DK2. I realize that it is marketed colloquially as having about a 100° field of view, but I assume this is just an estimated median between the two that is easier to refer to. For content and ergonomics, I would prefer to err on the side of safety and go with the smaller circular diameter.
24. The reality of this near area is tricky, as it’s a sort of gradient of discomfort. Within that nearest meter, how much strain is too much strain is a matter of opinion.
43. Microsoft has not yet detailed specifications for the hololens head mounted display. However, much can be extrapolated from the technologies in use and the experiences of others. It is very possible that a later consumer version may have higher resolutions, wider fields of view, and/or ways to display black pixels with varying opacity, but the current demo version appears to have the properties explained in the video.
46. This interface previsualization was created for an upcoming product. However, I have omitted most of the interface and features at the request of the creators since it is still in development.
54. Gaming consoles are examples of computers that are constantly doing complex rendering, so it’s definitely possible with current tech. What I was thinking of is how you won’t have a video for your current desktop or many users would disable the “aero” transparency in Windows because it’s taxing to performance including frame rate. Since VR has to maintain upwards of 75-90 frames per second, much of the complex multitasking we’re used to may be curbed in these first years if it was being additionally represented as meshes and materials with lighting. It is still definitely possible, though.

This unscripted interviews mostly took place during season one. A few were done during season two when the guys had become seasoned professionals at 24 years old!
