Alien director Sir Ridley Scott chats about his plans for the future of the sci-fi franchise. Interview by Jonny Nelson.
Why Engineers wanted to Drop Black Goo on Earth? Why Engineers hate humanity?
When I saw Prometheus I was quite surprised that one of the Engineers, creators of life on Earth was so agressive to the human crew and proceded to launch a ship that would destroy humanity. Many people probably expected species of this advanced civilization to act more peacefully but this it not what happens. In this video I’m gonna talk about why engineers hate humans and want to kill them and it’s not because they got jealous of human hair. Although the movie does not explicitly answer theis question Ridely Scott actually explains the Engineer motives in a podcast with the Empire Magazine.

Before we get to the Scott’s explanation, I will briefly mention some other good theories that also sound plausible and can be even more logical than the director’s answers.
One theory suggests that there are two fractions of Engineers - creators who seeded Life on Earth and destroyes who think that any other live form other than Engineers is unethical and shouldn’t exist. That would explain why the ship used by creators at the begining of Prometheus is different from Juggernauts used by destroyers. It would also explain the difference in suits since creators don’t have these bio suit that seemingly merge the body. So just like humans they probably have different nations and group with distinct goals.
Another theory is that Engineers seed planets with life to experiment and develop weapons. Once a civilization achieves a certain level of technlogal advancement they would drop their bio weapon the black goo in this case to test how effective it is.
We know that Engineers not only seed Earth with life but also the people on Planet 4 were their creations as well. So Engineer could experiment with humanoid life forms to see which ones would develop faster.
A different theory suggests that the Engineer started to kill people as soon as he touched David. Maybe the Engineer realized that David is not a biological creation and considered this quote on quate life form disgusting, so he killed David first and proceded to the human crew. Or maybe Engineers thought they are the only ones who are entitled to create just like humans programmed later versions of androids such as Walter forbidding them to be creators.
These were a pretty good theories but now let’s talk about the Ridley Scott explanation which I think is really good and ties with the dialog scene when the Engineer wakes up.
When Weyland tries to talk to the Engineer and Shaw interputs him, he order his man hit her and shoot her if she tries to speak again. Although it is presented as the Engineer does not understand English, I think he realized that humans are violent and dangerous species so that for some reason Weyland is allowed to talk to him but not Elizabeth.
As Ridley said he sees Engineers as gardeners of space that would occasionaly visit an empty bowl and out of their god like generousity create life but they periodicaly visit planets they’ve seeded if they discover that their offspings have lost their way and proved to be a disapointment, they would wipe the planet clean. Pretty much like God who caused the great flood because the Earth was filled with violence, corruption and inequality. This is very similar to what was happening on Earth around 0 b c when the Engineers originaly planned to deastoy humans.
As we know from prometheus, the Engineer ship was about 2000 years old, so after observing that humanity have not developed the way the wanted , Ridley states that Engineers decided to send their missionary Jesus Christ as the last attempt to guide humans onto the right path. But we ended up crisufing him, so the Engineers made a finaly decision that life on Earth was a mistake and prepared to launch their ship.
That is also confirmed by what David does to people on the planet 4.He learned of the Engineer and then dropped the black goo booms to destroy a humanoid race.
The Engineer in prometheus wakes up and sees that people that they wanted to destroy 2000 years ago arrived to the distant planet. He realizes that humans are still violent and corrupt spiecies who are also capable of interstellar travel which makes them even more dangerous to other Engineer creations. It is no surprise that the Engineer kills the human crew and proceeds to destroy Earth.
According to Ridley, the Engineer plant to destroy humanity is still relevant today based on what is happening in the world right not including the pollution of environment, poverty and inequality in poor countries.

One major question many of us had after watching Alien: Covenant was concerning the motives behind David and his relationship with Engineers and Mankind. What could be better than getting the answer from the creator of Alien Franchise Ridley Scott him-self? So In The Crossing prolog video, David voice-overs, explaining that while Shaw slept, he learned of the Engineer ways. it kinda hard to tell what exactly David meant by Engineer way, their history. philosophy or science. Following this, we then see David approach the Engineer city and proceed to bomb them using the Black Goo. Many of us speculated as to why David felt the need to destroy Engineers and many wondered what he might have learned about their culture to instigate such a reaction. Fortunately, during a podcast with Empire Magazine, Ridley Scott explained the motives behind the Engineer race and why David bombed them. If you want you can listen to the entire podcast, the link in the description but I’m gonna summarize the main point in this video.

According to Scott, the Engineers periodically visit worlds they've seeded with life and occasionally will "wipe the planet clean" if they discover their offspring have lost their way. Much like the catastrophes described in biblical times when God grew tired of Mankind, just like Engineers, he would eliminate entire generations of species if they proved to be a disappointment. If you remeber, in Prometheus, the crew discovered the Engenerr ship in 2093 and they determined that the ship is about 2000 years old. So for some reason Engeneers wanted to destroy humanity but changed thier minds around the time when people discovered faith and Christianity. It is a major theme in the movie, Elizabeth really cares about her cross necklace and at some point asks David to give it back to her.
Also Scott has said that the more specific details he had in mind, was that the Engineers tried to set us back on the right path. First by sending a missary to Earth about 2000 years ago to help guide us. That missary would be Jesus Christ. Unfortunately we end up crucifying him, but we obtained a faith in return, so Engineers decided to give humanity another chance and did not send the deadly virus. This is why a timeframe of 2000 years is specified in the movies.
"If the planet went wrong, they would want to wipe it clean. But that could take 500 years. When they revisit – because different visitors would come back and see we’re not doing so well – they would look at these human beings that are jerks, that are killing the planet, killing themselves, not able to settle down, they’re like a bunch of children. We should wipe it clean."
Following on, Ridley explains that David has no respect for Engineers or Humanity and actually have developed a hatred of their species collectively:
He hates them. He has no respect for Engineers and no respect for human beings.
David’s quate fron Alien Covenant seems to confirm what Ridley talked about.
“They are a dying species, grasping for resurrection. So they are leaving the earth forever.”David continues, “But their power is an illusion. They don’t deserve to start again, and I’m not going to let them.” o At first I thought that David adresses to humans, but it’s more likely the reference to the Engineers and their many visits in the past to Earth. that’s why David says "leaving the Earth forever” so he’s not speaking about humans, he clearly implies Engeneers. The word forever is key here, since humans are not close to leaving the Earth forever even though they are colonizing other planets. I think it is possible that when he says they are leaving the Earth forever that he means they meant to wipe it clean as they see Earth as a failed experiment and will never return.
Another interesting moment in Alien Covenant is when David looks at dead Engineers covered in Black Goo he says
"Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
This is a reference to Shelley's proverbial sonnet Ozymandias

Ridley Scott
Sir Ridley Scott (born 30 November 1937) is an English film director and producer. Following his commercial breakthrough with the science-fiction horror film Alien (1979), his better-known works are the neo-noir dystopian science fiction film Blade Runner (1982), crime drama Thelma & Louise (1991), historical drama and Best Picture Oscar winner Gladiator (2000), war film Black Hawk Down (2001), crime thriller Hannibal (2001), biographical film American Gangster (2007), and science fiction films Prometheus (2012) and The Martian (2015).
Scott is known for his atmospheric, highly concentrated visual style. Though his films range widely in setting and period, they frequently showcase memorable imagery of urban environments, whether 2nd century Rome (Gladiator), 12th century Jerusalem (Kingdom of Heaven), medieval England (Robin Hood), contemporary Mogadishu (Black Hawk Down), or the future cityscapes of Blade Runner. Scott has been nominated for three Academy Awards for Directing (for Thelma and Louise, Gladiator and Black Hawk Down). In 1995, both Ridley and his brother Tony received the BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Contribution To Cinema. In 2003, Scott was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace for his "services to the British film industry". In 2015, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Royal College of Art in London.

Why Engineers wanted to Drop Black Goo on Earth? Why Engineers hate humanity?
When I saw Prometheus I was quite surprised that one of the Engineers, creators of life on Earth was so agressive to the human crew and proceded to launch a ship that would destroy humanity. Many people probably expected species of this advanced civilization to act more peacefully but this it not what happens. In this video I’m gonna talk about why engineers hate humans and want to kill them and it’s not because they got jealous of human hair. Although the movie does not explicitly answer theis question Ridely Scott actually explains the Engineer motives in a podcast with the Empire Magazine.

Before we get to the Scott’s explanation, I will briefly mention some other good theories that also sound plausible and can be even more logical than the director’s answers.
One theory suggests that there are two fractions of Engineers - creators who seeded Life on Earth and destroyes who think that any other live form other than Engineers is unethical and shouldn’t exist. That would explain why the ship used by creators at the begining of Prometheus is different from Juggernauts used by destroyers. It would also explain the difference in suits since creators don’t have these bio suit that seemingly merge the body. So just like humans they probably have different nations and group with distinct goals.
Another theory is that Engineers seed planets with life to experiment and develop weapons. Once a civilization achieves a certain level of technlogal advancement they would drop their bio weapon the black goo in this case to test how effective it is.
We know that Engineers not only seed Earth with life but also the people on Planet 4 were their creations as well. So Engineer could experiment with humanoid life forms to see which ones would develop faster.
A different theory suggests that the Engineer started to kill people as soon as he touched David. Maybe the Engineer realized that David is not a biological creation and considered this quote on quate life form disgusting, so he killed David first and proceded to the human crew. Or maybe Engineers thought they are the only ones who are entitled to create just like humans programmed later versions of androids such as Walter forbidding them to be creators.
These were a pretty good theories but now let’s talk about the Ridley Scott explanation which I think is really good and ties with the dialog scene when the Engineer wakes up.
When Weyland tries to talk to the Engineer and Shaw interputs him, he order his man hit her and shoot her if she tries to speak again. Although it is presented as the Engineer does not understand English, I think he realized that humans are violent and dangerous species so that for some reason Weyland is allowed to talk to him but not Elizabeth.
As Ridley said he sees Engineers as gardeners of space that would occasionaly visit an empty bowl and out of their god like generousity create life but they periodicaly visit planets they’ve seeded if they discover that their offspings have lost their way and proved to be a disapointment, they would wipe the planet clean. Pretty much like God who caused the great flood because the Earth was filled with violence, corruption and inequality. This is very similar to what was happening on Earth around 0 b c when the Engineers originaly planned to deastoy humans.
As we know from prometheus, the Engineer ship was about 2000 years old, so after observing that humanity have not developed the way the wanted , Ridley states that Engineers decided to send their missionary Jesus Christ as the last attempt to guide humans onto the right path. But we ended up crisufing him, so the Engineers made a finaly decision that life on Earth was a mistake and prepared to launch their ship.
That is also confirmed by what David does to people on the planet 4.He learned of the Engineer and then dropped the black goo booms to destroy a humanoid race.
The Engineer in prometheus wakes up and sees that people that they wanted to destroy 2000 years ago arrived to the distant planet. He realizes that humans are still violent and corrupt spiecies who are also capable of interstellar travel which makes them even more dangerous to other Engineer creations. It is no surprise that the Engineer kills the human crew and proceeds to destroy Earth.
According to Ridley, the Engineer plant to destroy humanity is still relevant today based on what is happening in the world right not including the pollution of environment, poverty and inequality in poor countries.

Many of us speculated as to why David felt the need to destroy Engineers and many wondered what he might have learned about their culture to instigate such a reaction. what alien covenant means for the alien franchise.
According to Scott, the Engineers periodically visit worlds they've seeded with life and occasionally will "wipe the planet clean" if they discover their offspring have lost their way. Much like the catastrophes described in biblical times when God grew tired of Mankind, just like Engineers, he would eliminate entire generations of species if they proved to be a disappointment. If you remeber, in Prometheus, the crew discovered the Engenerr ship in 2093 and they determined that the ship is about 2000 years old. So for some reason Engeneers wanted to destroy humanity but changed thier minds around the time when people discovered faith and Christianity. It is a major theme in the movie, Elizabeth really cares about her cross necklace and at some point asks David to give it back to her.
Also Scott has said that the more specific details he had in mind, was that the Engineers tried to set us back on the right path. First by sending a missary to Earth about 2000 years ago to help guide us. That missary would be Jesus Christ. Unfortunately we end up crucifying him, but we obtained a faith in return, so Engineers decided to give humanity another chance and did not send the deadly virus. This is why a timeframe of 2000 years is specified in the movies.
"If the planet went wrong, they would want to wipe it clean. But that could take 500 years. When they revisit – because different visitors would come back and see we’re not doing so well – they would look at these human beings that are jerks, that are killing the planet, killing themselves, not able to settle down, they’re like a bunch of children. We should wipe it clean."
Following on, Ridley explains that David has no respect for Engineers or Humanity and actually have developed a hatred of their species collectively:
He hates them. He has no respect for Engineers and no respect for human beings.
David’s quate fron Alien Covenant seems to confirm what Ridley talked about.
“They are a dying species, grasping for resurrection. So they are leaving the earth forever.”David continues, “But their power is an illusion. One major question many of us had after watching Alien: Covenant was concerning the motives behind David and his relationship with Engineers and Mankind. What could be better than getting the answer from the creator of Alien Franchise Ridley Scott him-self? So In The Crossing prolog video, David voice-overs, explaining that while Shaw slept, he learned of the Engineer ways. it kinda hard to tell what exactly David meant by Engineer way, their history. philosophy or science. Following this, we then see David approach the Engineer city and proceed to bomb them using the Black Goo. Many of us speculated as to why David felt the need to destroy Engineers and many wondered what he might have learned about their culture to instigate such a reaction. Fortunately, during a podcast with Empire Magazine, Ridley Scott explained the motives behind the Engineer race and why David bombed them. If you want you can listen to the entire podcast, the link in the description but I’m gonna summarize the main point in this video.

According to Scott, the Engineers periodically visit worlds they've seeded with life and occasionally will "wipe the planet clean" if they discover their offspring have lost their way. Much like the catastrophes described in biblical times when God grew tired of Mankind, just like Engineers, he would eliminate entire generations of species if they proved to be a disappointment. If you remeber, in Prometheus, the crew discovered the Engenerr ship in 2093 and they determined that the ship is about 2000 years old. So for some reason Engeneers wanted to destroy humanity but changed thier minds around the time when people discovered faith and Christianity. It is a major theme in the movie, Elizabeth really cares about her cross necklace and at some point asks David to give it back to her.
Also Scott has said that the more specific details he had in mind, was that the Engineers tried to set us back on the right path. First by sending a missary to Earth about 2000 years ago to help guide us. That missary would be Jesus Christ. Unfortunately we end up crucifying him, but we obtained a faith in return, so Engineers decided to give humanity another chance and did not send the deadly virus. This is why a timeframe of 2000 years is specified in the movies.
"If the planet went wrong, they would want to wipe it clean. But that could take 500 years. When they revisit – because different visitors would come back and see we’re not doing so well – they would look at these human beings that are jerks, that are killing the planet, killing themselves, not able to settle down, they’re like a bunch of children. We should wipe it clean."
Following on, Ridley explains that David has no respect for Engineers or Humanity and actually have developed a hatred of their species collectively:
He hates them. He has no respect for Engineers and no respect for human beings.
David’s quate fron Alien Covenant seems to confirm what Ridley talked about.
“They are a dying species, grasping for resurrection. So they are leaving the earth forever.”David continues, “But their power is an illusion. A tribute to Ridley Scott and Vangelis, whose atmospheric work on Blade Runner has been a huge source of inspiration in my shooting time lapses, as well as for entire generations of filmmakers. I hope this will make many of you want to revisit (or discover if you haven't yet) this genre-defining movie. Shot roughly over a year in Tokyo with a Canon 5dmk2, mainly in the Shinjuku area. Music: "Main Titles" and "Blush Response" from Vangelis' haunting score. It still sends chills down my spine every time I listen to it... my favorite soundtrack to this day. A Tribute to BLADE RUNNER An experimental film in homage to Ridley Scott's legendary futuristic film “Blade Runner” (1982). Created by extracting 167,819 frames from 'Blade Runner's final cut version, then assembling all these images to obtain one gigantic image of colossal dimensions : a square of approximately 60,000 pixels on one side alone, 3.5 gigapixels. A virtual camera was then placed above this big picture which creates an illusion, because contrary to appearances, there is only one image. It is in fact the relative movement of the virtual camera flying over this massive image that creates the animated film, a kind of "zootrope effect", like a film in front of a projector. A Tribute to BLADE RUNNER
An experimental film in homage to Ridley Scott's legendary futuristic film “Blade Runner” (1982).
Created by extracting 167,819 frames from 'Blade Runner's final cut version, then assembling all these images to obtain one gigantic image of colossal dimensions : a square of approximately 60,000 pixels on one side alone, 3.5 gigapixels. A virtual camera was then placed above this big picture which creates an illusion, because contrary to appearances, there is only one image. It is in fact the relative movement of the virtual camera flying over this massive image that creates the animated film, a kind of "zootrope effect", like a film in front of a projector.
The whole concept echoes one of the signature scenes from the film where "Deckard" (Harrison Ford) analyzes a photograph via voice recognition software.

You probably know Richard Morrison's work for movies such as Batman, Brazil, High Fidelity, Enemy at the Gates, and Sweeney Todd. So we took a little trip to London to meet with the charismatic title designer, who also happens to be a fascinating character. Morrison talks title design, and takes us on a grand tour around the th1ng studio and to his favorite coffee shop in Soho, the wonderful Bar Italia, where he's made a lot of movie deals over the years.

In the early 1970's, Morrison was a young and ambitious graphic designer working at a production studio in London. Here he ran into title design legend Maurice Binder. Binder asked him to assist him with the production of one of the James Bond title sequences. This led Morrison to pursue movie title design. Morrison got his first "lucky break," as he calls it, in 1979, when director Franc Roddam asked him to design the main title for Quadrophenia.
Morrison's body of work includes over one hundred title sequences for film and TV. Notable directors he has worked with (often more than once) include, Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, Jean-Jacques Annaud, David Lean, Stephen Frears, Kenneth Branagh, Ridley Scott, and Nicolas Roeg.
Mid-summer of 2010, we took the train to London to visit Morrison at the th1ng headquarters in London for an interview. Morrison is a fascinating character to talk to, and a great storyteller. We shot in five different locations, such as the roof terrace of th1ng's office on Wardour Street, which reminded us of the moody images of Victorian London in the Sweeney Todd title sequence. In the afternoon we strolled the streets of London Soho, where Morrison has lived and worked for many years. He seemed to know everyone and constantly stopped to shake hands with people. We rounded up the interview at Bar Italia, an illustrious coffee shop in Soho, where the walls are clad with old pictures of Italian movie stars and where they serve the most amazing frappuccino's and cakes. It's also a place where Morrison often meets with directors to discuss projects.
This interview is the first in a brand-new series 9 video interviews with main title designers, filmed in 2010. These interviews are part of the “Forget the Film, Watch the Titles” 2 DVD-set, which is available from our shop.

AUDITORIUM SAN DOMENICO - FOLIGNO - ITALY
One of the most singular audio/visual performers as well as violinist, producer and director. Using his laptop computer and pedals, he creates violin and vocal loops while manipulating his tormenting visuals, resulting in an incredible effect. Zan's approach to film making aims to be organic. He directs, records, edits and handles the lighting for all his films, also while including complex animations and visual effects. His work has been awarded by Lux and the London Short Film Festival, Mtv2, and has been screened at Cannes, Onedotzero and Raindance festivals. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Ridley Scott's masterpiece Blade Runner, in 2009 Zan Lyons prepared a new edition of the soundtrack and a revision of the film. The result is Zan Lyons vs. Blade Runner. A fantastic live performance in which Zan rewrites the film score entirely and republishes certain scenes to create a complete never-before-seen show. For the 2011 Dancity Festival, he will be presenting this project in Italy for the first time.

Mani Nasry an exceptionally talented filmmaker, actor and artist with a sophisticated breadth of education, skills, experience, and professional accomplishments. He trained as an actor and director in New York with Salem Ludwig and with Donna DeMatteo for playwriting. For Mani, the decision to work in the film industry guided his academic decisions from an early age. He attended a Toronto high school renowned for excellence in the arts, and was accepted into one of the highly competitive film program at Ryerson university. It is notable that he went to Ryerson with an already well-established career in theatre, film, television and commercial work, and a range of multi-faceted achievements including producing, cinematography, casting, writing, directing, acting, and editing. On his own he added stints in New York and Los Angeles with leading acting teachers, as well as learning the grace and style of many forms of dance and athletics. With courses perceptively, he has also recognized the importance of acquiring an understanding of the business side of the industry, and the varied aspects of technology and production.
