Preston Sturges (/ˈstɜːrdʒɪs/; born Edmund Preston Biden; August 29, 1898 – August 6, 1959) was an American playwright, screenwriter, and film director. In 1941, he won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the film The Great McGinty, his first of three nominations in the category.
Sturges took the screwball comedy format of the 1930s to another level, writing dialogue that, heard today, is often surprisingly naturalistic, mature, and ahead of its time, despite the farcical situations. It is not uncommon for a Sturges character to deliver an exquisitely turned phrase and take an elaborate pratfall within the same scene. A tender love scene between Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck in The Lady Eve was enlivened by a horse, which repeatedly poked its nose into Fonda's head.
In recent years, film scholars such as Alessandro Pirolini have also argued that Sturges' cinema anticipated more experimental narratives by contemporary directors such as Joel and Ethan Coen, Robert Zemeckis, and Woody Allen, along with prolific The Simpsons writer John Swartzwelder: "Many of [Sturges'] movies and screenplays reveal a restless and impatient attempt to escape codified rules and narrative schemata, and to push the mechanisms and conventions of their genre to the extent of unveiling them to the spectator. See for example the disruption of standardized timelines in films such as The Power and the Glory and The Great McGinty or the way an apparently classical comedy such as Unfaithfully Yours (1948) shifts into the realm of multiple and hypothetical narratives."

Preston Struges is French playwright Serge Vitry in "Paris Holiday" (1958) - a star vehicle for Fernandel and Bob Hope. Although Sturges played a studio director in "Sullivans Travels" and a shoeshine patron in "Christmas in July", this was his only significant role. Hollywood's first writer/director, Sturges did not actually write his screenplays as much as act them out for a stenographer to catch in the moment.
"For me there's nobody handles Handel like you handle Handel." Preston Sturges silly somber "Unfaithfully Yours" (1948) marks a turning point for classic screwball comedy. Transatlantic classical conductor and inanely jealous hothead Sir Alfred de Carter (Rex Harrison) believes his young trophy wife is having an affair. Setting him straight is Sweeney the Private Eye (Edgar Kennedy). "Maybe I shouldn't be saying it, but if it was me I'd never have 'em tailed. I'd never try to find out nothin'. I'd just be grateful for whatever they was willing to give me: A year. A week. An hour..." On the other hand, O'Brien the Tailor (Julius Tannen) knows a Congressman when he sees one.

John Jr. is rebelling against the family name, as he wants to make it on his own without his father's help. J.B.'s bigger problem is with Jenny and what he sees as her exorbitant overspending. The latest example of that overspending is her purchase of a $58,000 sable coat, while she already has a closet-full of other fur coats. This position on Bazin has been the subject of recent critiques by Richard Rushton and Robert Sinnerbrink, building on Daniel Morgan’s “Rethinking Bazin” (2006). In this presentation, I will outline the terms of this new development and show that this “absolute realist” phase of understanding cinema is a return of sorts to Jacques Derrida’s analysis of textuality in the 1960s. My Group Media Project for LA Film School. I was put in a group (go Team Fuchsia!) and we were to make a three minute video of an interview with someone successful in the film or music industry. We chose Tom Sturges, executive vice president and head of Creative for Universal Music Publishing Group.
The original title of this influential screwball comedy was Is Marriage Necessary?, but even though writer-director Preston Sturges was on a roll, he couldn't get that one past the Hays Office. This was Joel McCrea's second Sturges lead after the fabulous Sullivan's Travels and the seventh of ten Sturges-written movies in which William Demarest appeared. The Wienie King and The Ale and Quail Club have become iconic comic touchstones for fans the world over. http://www.trailersfromhell.com
