Voltaire once said we must be tolerant of all things but intolerance. In PROM FIGHT, a gay Catholic high school student's personal request is denied and becomes a media frenzy. This passionate film charts a battle that pits the Church against the Charter of Human Rights, a community against a school board, and a family against it's faith.
From the beginning of this controversy, director Larry Peloso was granted complete access to document the strain suffered by Marc, his family and his boyfriend that leads up to a highly publicized court decision. Though this is a story with a happy ending, it comes with a price for a family dealing with the grief of suicide, rejection and unconditional love.

Marc Hall (aka Marc Watercus) jailed because of a rap song about "stoploss". // Army Specialist Marc Hall has been incarcerated in the Liberty County Jail near Fort Stewart, GA since December 11, 2009 for recording a rap song. The Iraq War combat veteran has been charged with fve separate violations of Article 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, claiming that he "communicated a threat" when he recently recorded a hip hop song expressing anger over the Armys stop-loss policy. Marc recorded the song entitled "Stop-loss" and mailed a copy to the Pentagon after the Army involuntarily extended his active duty contract in order to send him back to Iraq for another year. Marc explains, "My frst sergeant called me into his offce to discuss the songs nature. I explained to him that the hardcore rap song was a free expression of how people feel about the Army and its stop-loss policy. I explained that the song was neither a physical threat nor any threat whatsoever. I told him it was just hip-hop." Marc goes on to say, "My frst sergeant said he actually liked the song and that he did not take it as a threat. He and my commander at the time just recommended me for mental counseling and evaluation." Over the next few months Hall continued expressing uncomfortable feelings to his chain of command about his upcoming Iraq deployment. When Hall returned from two weeks leave on Dec. 7, 2009 he informed his chain of command that he could not in good conscience deploy again to Iraq. Four days later the Army placed Hall in the Liberty County Jail in Hinesville, GA claiming that Halls hip-hop lyrics amounted to the "communication of a threat." As Marc sits in a county jail, the Army continues to implement its stop-loss policy despite President Obamas promise to end the unfair practice. According to the Pentagon 120,000 soldiers have been affected by stop-loss since 2001 and 13,000 are currently serving under stop-loss orders.

Hall v Durham Catholic School Board
Hall v Durham Catholic School Board was a 2002 court case in which Marc Hall, a Canadian teenager, fought a successful legal battle against the Durham Catholic District School Board to bring a same-sex date to his high school prom. The case made Canadian and international headlines.
Legal case
Hall v Durham Catholic School Board began when Oshawa, Ontario's Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School asked students attending the prom to submit the names of the guests they intended to bring. Hall, who is gay, submitted the name of his 21-year-old boyfriend, Jean-Paul Dumond, and was denied on the grounds that homosexuality is incompatible with Roman Catholic teaching.
Supported by his family and a wide variety of community organizations, Hall thus took the school board to court in a two-day hearing that began on May 6, 2002. Hall's lawyer, David Corbett, argued that the denial of his request violated the Ontario Education Act, which requires school boards in the province not to discriminate. The school board, on the other hand, argued that court interference in its decision would amount to denying its religious freedom.

Prom
In the United States, and increasingly in the United Kingdom and Canada, prom is a formal (black tie) dance or gathering of high school students. This event is typically held near the end of the senior year (the last year of high school). Proms figure greatly in popular culture and is a major event among high school students. High school juniors attending the prom may call it "junior prom" while high-school seniors may call it "senior prom" or "senior ball". In practice, this event may be a combined junior/senior dance.
At a prom, a Prom King and Prom Queen may be revealed. These are honorary titles awarded to students elected in a school-wide vote prior to the prom, and seniors are usually awarded these titles. Juniors may also be honored, but would be called "Prom Prince" or "Prom Princess." Other students may be honored with inclusion in a "Prom Court." The selection method for a Prom Court is similar to that of Homecoming Queen/Princess, King, and Court. Inclusion in a Prom Court may be a reflection of popularity of those students elected and their level of participation in school activities, such as clubs or sports. The Prom Queen and Prom King may be given crowns to wear. Members of the Prom Court may be given sashes to wear and photographed together.

Hall
In architecture, a hall is a relatively large space enclosed by a roof and walls. In the Iron Age, a mead hall was such a simple building and was the residence of a lord and his retainers. Later, rooms were partitioned from it, and the space next to the front door became the entrance hall. Today, the (entrance) hall of a house is the space next to the front door or vestibule leading to the rooms directly and/or indirectly. Where the hall inside the front door of a house is elongated, it may be called a passage, corridor (from Spanish corredor used in El Escorial and 100 years later in Castle Howard) or hallway.
Other meanings
The term hall is often used to designate a British or Irish country house such as a hall house, or specifically a Wealden hall house, and manor houses.
In later medieval Europe, the main room of a castle or manor house was the great hall. In a medieval building, the hall was where the fire was kept. With time, its functions as dormitory, kitchen, parlour and so on were divided off to separate rooms or, in the case of the kitchen, a separate building.

Plot: In the small, predominantly working class town of Inniston, Ontario, 'Marc Hall (I)' (qv) is a high school senior with a promising future in his chosen career as lawyer. He is bright, well liked by his classmates and teachers, and quietly supported by his hard working parents, Audy and Emily Hall. He is also openly gay and attends St. Jude, a Catholic school. His cordial relationship with those in authority in his sphere of life is put to the test when he requests that his boyfriend Jason be his date to the graduation prom. That request is flatly denied by the school's hard nosed principal, Mr. Warrick. Despite seeing his prom as an important rite of passage, Marc refuses to go if he is denied this request. He is supported by his best friend Carly, who also refuses to go if Marc doesn't go. As such, Carly's boyfriend, Beau, mounts an online "support Marc" campaign with the help of the school's computer geeks. The online campaign and Marc's appeal to the Catholic School Board catches the attention of gay rights lawyer, Lonnie Winn, who takes Marc's case pro bono. The resulting media maelstrom causes further problems, for Marc's devoutly religious parents, within their relationships at work and more specifically at their church, and for Marc himself. Although Marc willingly signs on to the legal case in order to get what he wants, Jason may have a different view, he who was in the closet. And Marc himself may only be able to take so much - partly as lack of support from the school may jeopardize getting a scholarship, which he needs to attend university - as he just quietly wanted to attend the prom with his boyfriend with no muss or fuss.

Voltaire once said we must be tolerant of all things but intolerance. In PROM FIGHT, a gay Catholic high school student's personal request is denied and becomes a media frenzy. This passionate film charts a battle that pits the Church against the Charter of Human Rights, a community against a school board, and a family against it's faith.
From the beginning of this controversy, director Larry Peloso was granted complete access to document the strain suffered by Marc, his family and his boyfriend that leads up to a highly publicized court decision. Though this is a story with a happy ending, it comes with a price for a family dealing with the grief of suicide, rejection and unconditional love.

The Iraq War combat veteran has been charged with fve separate violations of Article 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, claiming that he "communicated a threat" when he recently recorded a hip hop song expressing anger over the Armys stop-loss policy. Marc recorded the song entitled "Stop-loss" and mailed a copy to the Pentagon after the Army involuntarily extended his active duty contract in order to send him back to Iraq for another year. Marc explains, "My frst sergeant called me into his offce to discuss the songs nature. I explained to him that the hardcore rap song was a free expression of how people feel about the Army and its stop-loss policy. I explained that the song was neither a physical threat nor any threat whatsoever. I told him it was just hip-hop." Marc goes on to say, "My frst sergeant said he actually liked the song and that he did not take it as a threat. He and my commander at the time just recommended me for mental counseling and evaluation." Over the next few months Hall continued expressing uncomfortable feelings to his chain of command about his upcoming Iraq deployment. When Hall returned from two weeks leave on Dec. 7, 2009 he informed his chain of command that he could not in good conscience deploy again to Iraq. Four days later the Army placed Hall in the Liberty County Jail in Hinesville, GA claiming that Halls hip-hop lyrics amounted to the "communication of a threat." As Marc sits in a county jail, the Army continues to implement its stop-loss policy despite President Obamas promise to end the unfair practice. According to the Pentagon 120,000 soldiers have been affected by stop-loss since 2001 and 13,000 are currently serving under stop-loss orders.

Voltaire once said we must be tolerant of all things but intolerance. In PROM FIGHT, a gay Catholic high school student's personal request is denied and becomes a media frenzy. This passionate film charts a battle that pits the Church against the Charter of Human Rights, a community against a school board, and a family against it's faith. From the beginning of this controversy, director Larry Peloso was granted complete access to document the strain suffered by Marc, his family and his boyfriend that leads up to a highly publicized court decision. Though this is a story with a happy ending, it comes with a price for a family dealing with the grief of suicide, rejection and unconditional love.
