CANADIAN ANARCHIST MOVEMENT:
THE VICTORIA ANARCHIST BOOKFAIR:
Fall rolls around once more, and, as the leaves are turning colour the colourful Victoria Anarchist Bookfair will be blowing into town out there on the west coast. Here's the details:
Victoria Anarchist Bookfair
Call for Participation
*****
1. Victoria Anarchist Bookfair Dates & Contacts
September 8th and 9th, 2012
Fernwood NRG Community Hall
1240 Gladstone Ave, Victoria, BC, Lekwungen Territory
We are pleased to announce the seventh annual Victoria Anarchist Bookfair, located on unceded Lekwungen Territory in Victoria, British Columbia. The Bookfair is for anarchists and non-anarchists, with participants from all over North America and beyond. The Bookfair always includes workshops on a wide range of topics. We seek to challenge colonial attitudes, introduce anarchism to the public, foster dialogue between various political traditions, and create radical, inclusive, anti-oppressive spaces. Participants with different visions, practices, and traditions are welcome. Events include book and information tables, workshops, readings, films, presentations, and much more!
We are particularly seeking workshops that engage with our theme of anti-colonialism and the mobilization to stop proposed pipeline projects in B.C.. This can include presentations on radical theory, Indigeneity, historical issues, participatory demonstrations, panel talks, facilitated discussions, and everything in between—if you have an idea for a workshop, we want to hear about it! We’re also keen on workshops that address, challenge, and connect gender, sexuality, ‘race’, colonialism, ability, capitalism, environmental destruction, workers’ struggles, and other issues affecting our communities.
Please consult our Statement of Principles before sending your proposal. It can be found on our website: http://victoriaanarchistbookfair.ca
This year's deadline is July 15th, 2012.
We are proud to have received Monday Magazine's 'M Award' for Victoria's best literary event in 2009.

If you’d like to table this year, please provide a short description of your group and the materials you intend to distribute at the Bookfair.
There is no fee for tabling at the Bookfair, but we will be requesting 10% of sales after expenses in order to help us cover costs.

3. Workshop & Presentation Proposals: for Sept 8 & 9
The Bookfair organizing collective is currently seeking workshop and presentation proposals.
As stated above this Bookfair we are looking to convene in order to challenge the ongoing colonization of our communities and our minds. We are looking for workshops that discuss Indigenous perspectives, de-colonialisation, social struggles, and environmental issues. We also aim to foster a growing movement in resistance to colonialism through the sharing of practical skills. Together we can acknowledge our past and move forward with meaningful solidarity.
Workshops may be aimed at people who are curious about, or new to, anarchist ideas and radical practices; alternatively they might address a topic in depth for people who are already familiar with the subject.
Standard Bookfair workshops last for 50 minutes with a 10-minute break in between. While we are open to a variety of workshop formats, we recommend that facilitators leave at least 20 minutes for discussion at the end of their presentations. Each year we get a lot of submissions, but if we don’t have space at the Bookfair, we still want to help make your workshop happen!
Please provide a title and short description of the workshop's content in your submission. If your workshop is accepted, this information will be reprinted in the program zine.
NOTE: The deadline for all workshop and presentation proposals is July 15, 2012 (after that date we cannot guarantee a timeslot at the Bookfair or inclusion in our program-zine for late submissions).

4. Festival of Anarchy Events: Sept 1– 7 (various locations TBA)
In addition to the Bookfair, a "Festival of Anarchy" will take place during the preceding week with diverse anarchist-themed events occurring at different venues in Victoria. You can propose any type of event or activity: the only limit is your imagination. Also this year the Urban Interventionists are looking to coordinate artists to intervene in spaces around the city. Installations, flash mobs, bike races, dance parties, punk shows under bridges, guerilla art, graffiti, performances… and beyond.
Festival of Anarchy events as well as the Urban Interventionists are organized autonomously from the Bookfair and, as such, venues are the responsibility of Event Organizers—that’s you! The Bookfair Collective acts as a hub to promote and coordinate these events. We’re committed to helping promote autonomous festival events to the best of our ability through the program zine and the website.
If you’re interested in having us promote your event, please provide a title and short description of your program by July 15, 2012 so that we can include it in our zine and on our website.
We strongly recommend Festival Events are NOT scheduled during the Bookfair's operating hours. In general, contacting the Bookfair Collective about scheduling dates before our proposal deadline is a useful way to ensure the least number of event conflicts.

We’re looking for help in all kinds of areas such as postering, welcoming & information tabling, room set-up, kids activities, counselling and safe-space support, cleanup and more. The Bookfair is entirely volunteer-run and helping out is a great way to get involved and meet new people. If you’re interested, please read the volunteer descriptions, our collective principles and accessibility statements on our website, and let us know how you’d like to help out!

The Victoria Anarchist Bookfair, like the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair, is actually part of a more extended 'Festival of Anarchy' that starts tonight, September 3. Here's more on these events.
@@@@@@@@@@
Festival of Anarchy Schedule
The Festival of Anarchy starts on September 3rd and builds up the momentum for opening day of the Anarchist Bookfair. This year we are proud to host a wide variety of events featuring many talented artists, musicians, film-makers and activists. Check out the line up!

Friday, September 3rd

PANIC!: FREEDOM IN SOUND 2
Camas Books, 2590 Quadra Street

Sound art, experimental music and performance, plus DIY art gallery
arrive at 5 pm to hang your art
7 pm for PANIC! Freedom in Sound

Saturday, September 4th

WE HAVE NO LEADERS! Benefit show for Kelly Pflug-Back
Mike XVX, Jeff Andrew, Star, Comrade Black, Chase, Sasha n Nedjo & more friends
$5-$15 sliding scale, no one turned away! All money raised goes to Kelly's legal defence
7:30 pm, BCGEU, 2994 Douglas St (PLEASE NOTE NEW ADDRESS)

Kelly Pflug-Back is a long time community organizer, whom has been targeted by the police and scape-goated as "the leader of the black bloc" from the G20. She is facing 13 charges including conspiracy, and mischief. The courts are viewing her charges as "hate crimes" against the police, meaning if she is convicted she will be given a stiffer sentence than normal.

This is a blatant misuse of hate crime legislation originally intended to protect identifiable minorities from racist, homophobic or sexist violence. We believe Kelly is being targeted for her roll as a community organizer doing anti-racist and anti-poverty work in her community.

Sunday, September 5th

URBAN CAPTURE THE FLAG
8:00 pm in Bastion Square

Capture the Flag is a team-based game popularized by the Boy Scouts of America as a way to prepare boys for conscription during the World Wars. Urban Capture the Flag (UCTF) is a 21st Century detournement of this practice, primarily organized by anarchists in North America as a way to build community, reclaim the streets and public space, develop insurrectionary and protest tactics for affinity groups, produce a counter-spectacle for passers-by and build group morale through risk-taking together.

Monday, September 6th

Anarchist ‘day of rest’

Tuesday, September 7th

PRISONS AT THE FRONT LINE OF REVOLUTION
A Victoria Anarchist Reading Circle event with Juliet Belmas
7:30 pm Camas Books, 2590 Quadra Street

After a lengthy prison term for smashing the state, Juliet Belmas has gone on to produce several award-winning short films about women in prison. Her painterly cinematic style and experimental production values have been characterized ‘subtle, yet harrowing.’ This evening she will discuss the politics of incarceration, including recent round-ups at the G-20 summit in Toronto, and why prisons are a “front-line” in the anarchist struggle. ( Sad as it is we have to interrupt this recorded announcement here and now. Julie "fucking" Belmas !!! Now I can die happy because I have indeed seen everything. It's things like this that make me doubt the sanity of some of my presumed "comrades". I have learned over the years that the way they see "reality" is quite different from the way I see it or, more importantly the way that over 99% of the population views it. And I think that a "health warning" should be put on much of their pronouncements insofar as the stated content is quite remote from their actual motivations. If I didn't claim the "anarchist" label I'd perhaps feel pity rather than annoyance. On the other hand I see what I have been doing for almost 40 years as 'politics', and they see it as ???? )
Wednesday, September 8th

FUCK YOU!
7:30 pm Camas Books, 2590 Quadra Street

An introduction to kink and sex toys with Michelle Powell.

Thursday, September 9th

END:CIV SCREENING
Franklin López--Director/Producer, subMedia
7:30 pm, Camas Books, 2590 Quadra Street

END:CIV examines our culture’s addiction to systematic violence and environmental exploitation, and probes the resulting epidemic of poisoned landscapes and shell-shocked nations. Based in part on Endgame, the best-selling book by Derrick Jensen, END:CIV asks: "If your homeland was invaded by aliens who cut down the forests, poisoned the water and air, and contaminated the food supply, would you resist?"

Taking the long view: endless economic growth has turned into a global economic crash. What will the next hundred years bring? Students of history know that all civilizations eventually come to an end. The ancient Mayans, the dynasties of China, and the mighty Roman Empire, as long-lived and powerful as they were, could not escape this inevitability. The same goes for the culture we call Western Civilization. The causes underlying the collapse of civilizations are usually traced to overuse of resources. As we write this, the world is reeling from economic chaos, peak oil, climate change, environmental degradation, and political turmoil. Every day the headlines re-hash stories of scandal and betrayal of the public trust. We don't have to make outraged demands for the end of the current global system -- it seems to be coming apart already.

But acts of courage, compassion and altruism abound, even in the most damaged places. By documenting the resilience of the people hit hardest by war and repression, and the heroism of those coming forward to confront the crisis head-on, END:CIV illuminates a way out of this all-consuming madness and into a saner future.

CANADIAN ANARCHIST MOVEMENT-VICTORIA:
REPORT ON THE VICTORIA ANARCHIST BOOKFAIR:
Here's something that there is far too little of, a report on a recent anarchist bookfair held in the Canadian city of Victoria. There should be more of such public reports. The following is from the A-Infos website.
@@@@@@@@@@
Canada, Victoria Anarchist Bookfair Report Back:
This past weekend marked the beginning of the 4th Annual Victoria Anarchist Bookfair in British Columbia, Canada. For those of you who have never been, Victoria is a prime tourist location that can be described as nothing less than “quaint”—and I don’t mean that in a good way. Regardless, Victoria’s local radicals have managed to prove that there is more to the city than the world’s most well kept gardens and daily whale watching expeditions. The bookfair brought together an interesting assortment of vendors, collectives, and organizations, each with a unique project and mission. Being my first trip north of the border, the bookfair provided a space for me to connect with and learn about the different struggles that some individuals and communities in B.C. are facing. Off the bat, it was good to see the bookfair organizing collective’s Statement of Indigenous Solidarity:
The Bookfair collective supports the struggles of indigenous peoples throughout North America to assert their cultural autonomy and territorial sovereignty. Victoria is located on the traditional inter-lapping territories of the Lekwungen and Songhees peoples, who have endured the seizure of much of their land by force and repeated attempts to obliterate their culture through multiple forces of colonization. The resilience and strength of these and the other communities who make ancestral connections to this region in the face of injustice, challenges us to support them and all indigenous peoples in the on-going struggle against colonialism, capitalism, and cultural genocide.
As with previous years, there were various events held throughout the week leading up to the bookfair, including the D.I.Y Fair, which, luckily, I was able to attend part of. Among the myriad of workshops held at the D.I.Y. Fair (guerrilla art, first aid, etc), AK author Cindy Milstein facilitated a discussion entitled “Educating for Freedom” where she spoke about her work at The Institute for Anarchist Studies. Cindy also gave a talk the next day at the bookfair entitled “Anarchism’s Principles and Prefigurative Politics,” which covered some of the themes touched upon in her upcoming book, Anarchism and its Aspirations, available soon from AK Press. After the first day of tabling, much of the crowd headed over to a bookfair-affiliated spoken word/hip-hop show featuring Testament, an anarchist rapper, who also helps run the Empowerment Infoshop in London, BC. ( Ooops, I think he means London Ontario-Molly )
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to attend any of the workshops held during the bookfair because I had to tend to the AK table, but the line-up was solid, with presentations regarding Gender-Queer Anarchy, Indigenous Resistance to Ecocide, Social Transformation through Martial Arts, and more. I did get a chance to walk around the bookfair hall, which included local booksellers Camas Infoshop and Black Raven Records, among others. Josh Macphee, author of Realizing the Impossible, was also present at the bookfair tabling for the radical arts collective Just Seeds. Positioned at a 90 degree angle from the AK table was a new group called the Women’s Publication Network, a project of the UVSS Women’s Center, who were handing out free zines. I found some incredible zines at this table, including a collection of writings from (mostly Canadian) young women of color and a zine critiquing the portrayal of First Nation Peoples in Canadian cinema. Directly across from the AK table was Victoria Street Newz, an independent newspaper/activist resource distributed by low/no income people throughout the city. There is current contact info for all of these groups at each of their linked websites, so please get in touch to find out how you could support any and all of these projects.
Across the room, Gord Hill, author of 500 Years of Indigenous Resistance was tabling on behalf of Warrior Publications, as well as the No 2010 Olympics on Stolen Native Land campaign. For those of you who haven’t heard about the No 2010 campaign, I urge you to visit their website www.no2010.com, to find out why such a diverse constituency has come together to resist the devastating impact that the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver is sure to bring to local Indigenous communities, women, and poor people alike. Heads up—if you are anywhere near the west coast during the month of November, stay alert for updates on the No 2010 Speaking Tour that is making its way down the coast.
I wish I could give you a better sense of what a great learning experience the Victoria Anarchist Bookfair was for me, but I guess it’s just one of those things where you just have to be there. Lucky for you, there’s always next year.

CANADIAN ANARCHIST MOVEMENT:
REPORT FROM THE VICTORIA ANARCHIST BOOKFAIR:
The following first person report on the recent Victoria Anarchist Bookfair is from Larry Gambone's Porkupine Blog. Drop on over there for the original and for much more on politics, anthropology, history. Always an interesting read. Also don't forget the upcoming Edmonton Anarchist Bookfair, the last of the season, coming up in early October.
.................................
Victoria's Third Annual Anarchist Book Fair. Sept 12-13 :

I was impressed by last years book fair, and this year I was not disappointed.. There seemed to be at least as many people in attendance as previously, but I was pleased to see a broader cross section of the population than before. Although still largely "Euro" there was a significant contribution from First Nations people and I saw some Latino youth and other people of colour were present. The age range seemed broader too, not overwhelmingly young students, not that there would be anything wrong with that, but the movement has to expand into other sectors of the population to become a significant force. A fair number of babies too. Good going!
Had a fine time talking and networking with folks from Victoria, Montreal, San Francisco, and Edmonton. The workshops seemed well attended – at least those in the morning-early afternoon. I only got to attend one of these, since I was tabling most of the time. This was about actualizing radical projects and was hosted by the amazing and brilliant surrealist poet, zinester, clown, and performance artist Paula Belina from Montreal. Sadly, I had to leave early, but found her workshop inspiring.
The place I was going in such a hurry was the Camas Books Dinner, to help support this anarchist book shop and infocenter. About 70 people sat outside on trestle tables, chatting, listening to a guitar-mandolin-accordion duo by two very talented and beautiful young women. The food was great too, and had amusing names such as "Federated Commune Salad" While sitting there, surrounded by people of all ages and origins, it came to me that a line had been crossed. The scene was much like what I found in European anarchist circles – a sense of community, and though relatively few in number, grown beyond being a tiny, inward-looking sect, into something that has put down roots. Later at Camas Books the Anniversary Show of music and spoken word was held, but I could not stay for long, now feeling the length of the day.

I should point out that the events I describe were not the only ones occurring. A whole week of film, discussions and music preceded the Book Fair. (See www.victoriaanarchistbookfair.ca/ ) I salute the volunteers who put in so much effort and looked rather tired by Sunday afternoon!

What: The third annual Anarchist Bookfair Where:the Victoria Cool Aid Society (755 Pandora St.) When: Sept. 13 - 14
Looking for a little controversial fun? The third annual Anarchist Bookfair opens this Saturday, and promises a jam-packed slate of entertainment.
Workshops begin at 11:30 a.m. and run until 5:30 p.m., with discussion topics ranging from “Founding and Maintaining Co-ops” to “Anarchy is for Lovers: Applying anarchist principles to interpersonal relationships.”
The happenings continue on Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Among topics up for discussion are “Fermenting Revolution With Pickles” and “Indigenous Resistance: The anti-Olympics struggle.
”Two members of the Victoria anarchist collective have strong connections to UVic. Allan Antliff holds a Canada Research Chair in art history at the university, and in 2006 founded an anarchist archive that resides in special collections at the McPherson Library.
“[The bookfair] addresses contemporary concerns, such as ecology, gender, arts and political theory,” said Allan.
UVic student Jessica Ziakin is a member of the anarchist collective and the official spokesperson of the bookfair.
Ziakin described what she felt to be a lack of radical intellectual community at UVic, and stressed that the bookfair and collective are an opportunity to foster such relationships.
The event is also an opportunity to meet producers of radical culture from all over North America. Independent publishers, writers and artists will bring their wares from as far away as San Fransisco and Halifax.
Much of the work these vendors have to offer represents the leading edge of anarchist thought, and aside from those titles that are carried in the Camas bookstore (at the corner of Quadra Street and Kings Road), are unavailable to even the curious or devoted anarchist.
But the Victoria Anarchist Bookfair is a free event both for vendors and patrons.
“The bookfair gives people an opportunity to see the positive aspects of the philosophy,” said Allan. “It runs on volunteers and co-operation.
Ziakin added that many think of anarchy as gloomy at best.
“It’s not chaos, it’s actually about social justice, mutual aid, community, self-governance and ecological sustainability,” she said.
Volunteers are appreciated throughout the event and will be accepted spontaneously at the organizing table. Help is needed particularly for the clean-up after the bookfair.
If hunting for literary treasure isn’t your thing, special gatherings are planned for after the bookfair on Saturday and Sunday nights. On Saturday, participants have the opportunity to eat at the Camas Books Anniversary Dinner at the Blanshard Community Centre, then attend the Camas Bookstore for their first Birthday Bash. The fun is at the Folk Music Night at the Solstice Cafe from 6 to 11 p.m on Sunday night.
The bookfair represents the culmination of the week-long Festival of Anarchy involving art installations, poetry readings, lectures and workshops. On Friday, Sept. 12 the festival hosts a Do-It-Yourself fair that features workshops on using the Linux operating system, stencilling, beatboxing and more. That fair starts at 11 a.m. at the Victoria Events Centre. By 6:30 p.m. the fair will stop, and a punk show will begin.
