The Fountain is a 2006 American drama film that blends elements of fantasy, history, spirituality, and science fiction. It is directed by Darren Aronofsky, and stars Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz. The film consists of three story lines, in which Jackman and Weisz play different sets of characters who may or may not be the same two people: a modern-day scientist and his cancer-stricken wife, a conquistador and his queen, and a space traveler in the future who hallucinates his lost love. The story lines—interwoven with use of match cuts and recurring visual motifs—reflect the themes of love and mortality.
Aronofsky originally planned to direct The Fountain on a $70 million budget with Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett in the lead roles, but Pitt's withdrawal and cost overruns led Warner Bros. to shut down production. The director rewrote the script to be sparser, and was able to resurrect the film with a $35 million budget with Jackman and Weisz in the lead roles. Production mainly took place on a sound stage in Montreal, Quebec, and the director used macro photography to create key visual effects for The Fountain at a low cost.

Water Flame is an installation combining two elements usually opposed to each other in a spectactular but nevertheless minimalist way: a small sprinkling fountain with a flame burning on the top. This paradoxical constellation of elements creates an effect of astonishment and wonder.

“THE GREATNESS” BY YI ZHOU SOUNDTRACK PERFORMED BY ENNIO MORRICONE AND YI ZHOU The Greatness is Yi Zhou’s latest 3-D animation video, another step in her continuing research on the boundaries between dreams and reality, imagination and madness, truth and lies, and life after death. Ms. Zhou is inspired once again by Dante’s the Divine Comedy. Her imaginary journey through the circles of Hell, Purgatory and Paradise appropriates specific images, scenes, and characters from her earlier work : Pharrell Williams and the bridge from the video The Ear (2008); The fountain frozen in an other-worldly realm of ice from the video Paradise (2007) and the image of the beating heart from My Heart Laid Bare (2006) and places them in a new and extraordinary environments. These juxtapositions and re-im...
Darren Aronofsky seems to favor tracking shots that capture his characters from behind rather than the front or side (most frequently in The Wrestler and Black Swan). Using a dolly, Steadicam, Snorricam, or handheld camera, Aronosfky makes us feel as if we are being dragged through a scene. These shots are most often employed when his characters are experiencing times of stress or disorder. As they journey blindly into the unknown, we are forced to follow them. In 2005 Hi-ReS! built the site for The Fountain a Darren Aronofsky film realeased in 2006 through Warner Bros and Protozoa Pictures. We had started talking to Darren about working on his new feature, The Fountain, in 2002, when suddenly a cast member dropped out and the whole project was shelved. Fast forward 3 years and he is showing us a rough edit of the resurrected feature, now with Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz and it's clear this movie has a similar emotional impact on us as Requiem did 5 years earlier. The site became an untangled interpretation of the non-linear storyline of the film, divided into 6 chapters. There is little point in trying to describe either the film or the site - it’s best experienced for yourself...

Oooh Ooh Ooh Oooh Ooh Ooh Oooh Oh Oooh
(Ooh Oh Oh Oooh Ooh)On a distant hillside
I watched our love die (Ooh Oh Oh Oooh Ooh)
I lost my baby to the winter.
And I couldn't bear to hold you near when everything I feel is haunting me.
Darling dear (Darling dear)
I 'm right here (I 'm right here)
Baby doll
Don't take me back to the fountain (Don't take me back)
There's nothing left there for you (There's nothing left for you)
Just take your flowers and leave them at the fountain (And watch the fountain bloom)
Oooh Ooh Ooh Oooh Ooh Ooh Oooh
I found you in an empty room (ooh ooh oh oooh)
I let you go (ooh ooh oh ooh)
How could I know
To hold you near when everything I fear was haunting me.
Darling dear (Darling dear)
I 'm not here (I'm not here)
Anymore.
Don't take me back to the fountain (Don't take me back)
There's nothing left for me and you (There's nothing left for you)
Just take your flowers and leave them at the fountain
Just take your flowers and watch me walk away (Will walk away today)
Just take your flowers and leave them at the fountain
Just take your flowers and watch me wilt away (Will wilt away today)
