Smaug (/smaʊɡ/) is a fictional dragon and the primary antagonist in J. R. R. Tolkien's 1937 novel The Hobbit. He is a powerful, intelligent, malevolent and fearsome dragon who invaded the Dwarf kingdom of Erebor 150 years prior to the events described in the novel. A group of 13 Dwarves mounted a quest to take the kingdom back, aided by the wizard Gandalf and the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins. Smaug is described as "a most specially greedy, strong and wicked worm". Smaug appears in the Hobbit film adaption as one of the main antagonists.
One of the last great Fire-drakes of Middle-earth, Smaug rose to prominence by laying waste to the town of Dale and capturing the Dwarf-kingdom of the Lonely Mountain (Erebor) with all of its treasure. These events occurred some 150 years before the events of The Hobbit, and Smaug was already centuries old at the time. The Hobbit recounts the tale of a party of dwarves (consisting of a few of the original residents of the Lonely Mountain and their descendants), the hobbit Bilbo Baggins, and their quest to recapture the mountain and kill the dragon. In the book, the dragon is sometimes called Smaug the Golden or Smaug the Magnificent.
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again is a fantasy novel and children's book by English author J. R. R. Tolkien. It was published on 21 September 1937 to wide critical acclaim, being nominated for the Carnegie Medal and awarded a prize from the New York Herald Tribune for best juvenile fiction. The book remains popular and is recognized as a classic in children's literature.
Set in a time "Between the Dawn of Færie and the Dominion of Men",The Hobbit follows the quest of home-loving hobbit Bilbo Baggins to win a share of the treasure guarded by the dragon, Smaug. Bilbo's journey takes him from light-hearted, rural surroundings into more sinister territory. The story is told in the form of an episodic quest, and most chapters introduce a specific creature, or type of creature, of Tolkien's geography. By accepting the disreputable, romantic, fey and adventurous sides of his nature and applying his wits and common sense, Bilbo gains a new level of maturity, competence and wisdom. The story reaches its climax in the Battle of the Five Armies, where many of the characters and creatures from earlier chapters re-emerge to engage in conflict.

Benedict Cumberbatch -- Behind-the-Scenes of The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, talking about the creative process and a sneak peek into what went into making Smaug himself.
A Hobbit, some Dwarves, and a Wizard walk into a mountain... well not the wizard, he likes to bail on everyone at a time where him staying would make the quest much simpler ... also there's a dragon that nobody seems to want to prepare for .... The sun peaked at noon
I watched it hoping it would rise
Just a little higher
And give me a guiding light
A guiding light
I must admit I felt some relief
When the sun began to sink
I mean who really wants to see
Things in blinding white
Blinding white
It grows dark
I feel my way home
Sleep
Sleep if you can sleep
Me I'll be staying up
Long into the night
Trying to prove wrong
All the statements I made
All the statements I just made
A guiding light
You were born in the middle of the night
