documenta 14’s exhibit in Athens has opened its doors for its fourteenth season. Germany’s renowned modern art exhibition is running in two cities for the first time in its history: Athens and Kassel.
Learning from Athens is the tagline given by artistic director Adam Szymczyk to documenta 14. The modern art exhibition is one of the largest in the world and has been held in Kassel, Germany, since 1955. But this year, the exhibit is split between two cities in two different countries: it’s a controversial move.
Athens is currently struggling with economic problems and is also on the frontline of the refugee crisis. While curators and artists hope it will reinvigorate the Greek capital’s art scene, the plan’s detractors complain that it smacks of cultural imperialism.
One of the critics, former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis, called it ‘a gimmick’ to exploit the tragedy in Greece. Will the troubled city end up little more than a striking backdrop for the international art élite? What can wealthy northern Europe really learn from a city that’s struggling to stay afloat?
What happens when the event is over? And what purpose does art serve in times of crisis? A look behind the scenes of documenta 14, which kicks off in the Greek capital on April 8 and moves on to Kassel in June.

Die Documenta in Kassel gilt als einer der wichtigsten internationalen Kunstausstellungen, die einen Überblick über das zeitgenössische Kunstschaffen geben. Die Documenta findet alle 5 Jahre statt, 2012 ist es die 13. Ausgabe. Diesmal wird die Ausstellung von der bulgarisch-italienischen Kunsthistorikerin Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev kuratiert. Hauptschauplätze der Documenta sind unter anderem das Fridericianum, die Documenta-Halle, das Ottoneum und die Neue Galerie. Daran, dass die erste Documenta 1955 von Arnold Bode als Teil der damaligen Bundesgartenschau in Kassel gegründet wurde, erinnert die grossräumige Verteilung von Kunst in der Karlsaue, dem 1,5 Quadratmeter grossen Park. Unter den in der diesjährigen Weltgartenschau gezeigten Künstlern sind Issa Samb, Song Dong, Giuseppe Pennone, Robin Kahn La Cooperativa Unidad Nacional Mujeres Saharauis (The National Union of Women from Western Sahara) (Karlsaue); Ryan Gander, Konrad Zuse, Ida Applebroog, Alighiero Boetti, Llyn Foulkes, Goshka Macuga (Karslaue and Fridericianum); Julie Mehretu, Etel Adnan, Yan Lei, Thomas Bayrle (Documenta-Halle); und Adrián Villar Rojas (Weinbergterrassen).

Kassel
Kassel (German pronunciation: [ˈkasəl]; spelt Cassel until 1928) is a city located on the Fulda River in northern Hesse, Germany. It is the administrative seat of the Regierungsbezirk Kassel and the Kreis of the same name and has approximately 195 000 inhabitants. The former capital of the state of Hesse-Kassel has many palaces and parks, including the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kassel is also known for the documenta exhibitions of contemporary art.
History
The city's name is derived from the ancient Castellum Cattorum, a castle of the Chatti, a German tribe that had lived in the area since Roman times.
Kassel was first mentioned in 913 AD, as the place where two deeds were signed by King Conrad I. The place was called Chasella and was a fortification at a bridge crossing the Fulda river. A deed from 1189 certifies that Cassel had city rights, but the date when they were granted is not known.
In 1567, the Landgraviate of Hesse, until then centered in Marburg, was divided among four sons, with Hesse-Kassel (or Hesse-Cassel) becoming one of its successor states. Kassel was its capital and became a centre of Calvinist Protestantism in Germany. Strong fortifications were built to protect the Protestant stronghold against Catholic enemies. Secret societies, such as Rosicrucianism flourished, with Christian Rosenkreutz's work Fama Fraternitis first published in 1617. In 1685, Kassel became a refuge for 1700 Huguenots who found shelter in the newly established borough of Oberneustadt. Landgrave Charles, who was responsible for this humanitarian act, also ordered the construction of the Oktagon and of the Orangerie. In the late 18th Century, Hesse-Kassel became infamous for selling mercenaries (Hessians) to the British crown to help suppress the American Revolution and to finance the construction of palaces and the Landgrave's opulent lifestyle.

documenta 14’s exhibit in Athens has opened its doors for its fourteenth season. Germany’s renowned modern art exhibition is running in two cities for the first time in its history: Athens and Kassel.
Learning from Athens is the tagline given by artistic director Adam Szymczyk to documenta 14. The modern art exhibition is one of the largest in the world and has been held in Kassel, Germany, since 1955. But this year, the exhibit is split between two cities in two different countries: it’s a controversial move.
Athens is currently struggling with economic problems and is also on the frontline of the refugee crisis. While curators and artists hope it will reinvigorate the Greek capital’s art scene, the plan’s detractors complain that it smacks of cultural imperialism.
One of the critics, former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis, called it ‘a gimmick’ to exploit the tragedy in Greece. Will the troubled city end up little more than a striking backdrop for the international art élite? What can wealthy northern Europe really learn from a city that’s struggling to stay afloat?
What happens when the event is over? And what purpose does art serve in times of crisis? A look behind the scenes of documenta 14, which kicks off in the Greek capital on April 8 and moves on to Kassel in June.

Die Documenta in Kassel gilt als einer der wichtigsten internationalen Kunstausstellungen, die einen Überblick über das zeitgenössische Kunstschaffen geben. Die Documenta findet alle 5 Jahre statt, 2012 ist es die 13. Ausgabe. Diesmal wird die Ausstellung von der bulgarisch-italienischen Kunsthistorikerin Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev kuratiert. Hauptschauplätze der Documenta sind unter anderem das Fridericianum, die Documenta-Halle, das Ottoneum und die Neue Galerie. Daran, dass die erste Documenta 1955 von Arnold Bode als Teil der damaligen Bundesgartenschau in Kassel gegründet wurde, erinnert die grossräumige Verteilung von Kunst in der Karlsaue, dem 1,5 Quadratmeter grossen Park. Unter den in der diesjährigen Weltgartenschau gezeigten Künstlern sind Issa Samb, Song Dong, Giuseppe Pennone, Robin Kahn La Cooperativa Unidad Nacional Mujeres Saharauis (The National Union of Women from Western Sahara) (Karlsaue); Ryan Gander, Konrad Zuse, Ida Applebroog, Alighiero Boetti, Llyn Foulkes, Goshka Macuga (Karslaue and Fridericianum); Julie Mehretu, Etel Adnan, Yan Lei, Thomas Bayrle (Documenta-Halle); und Adrián Villar Rojas (Weinbergterrassen).

Die Documenta in Kassel gilt als einer der wichtigsten internationalen Kunstausstellungen, die einen Überblick über das zeitgenössische Kunstschaffen geben. Die Documenta findet alle 5 Jahre statt, 2012 ist es die 13. Ausgabe. Diesmal wird die Ausstellung von der bulgarisch-italienischen Kunsthistorikerin Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev kuratiert. Hauptschauplätze der Documenta sind unter anderem das Fridericianum, die Documenta-Halle, das Ottoneum und die Neue Galerie. Daran, dass die erste Documenta 1955 von Arnold Bode als Teil der damaligen Bundesgartenschau in Kassel gegründet wurde, erinnert die grossräumige Verteilung von Kunst in der Karlsaue, dem 1,5 Quadratmeter grossen Park. Unter den in der diesjährigen Weltgartenschau gezeigten Künstlern sind Issa Samb, Song Dong, Giuseppe Pennone, Robin Kahn La Cooperativa Unidad Nacional Mujeres Saharauis (The National Union of Women from Western Sahara) (Karlsaue); Ryan Gander, Konrad Zuse, Ida Applebroog, Alighiero Boetti, Llyn Foulkes, Goshka Macuga (Karslaue and Fridericianum); Julie Mehretu, Etel Adnan, Yan Lei, Thomas Bayrle (Documenta-Halle); und Adrián Villar Rojas (Weinbergterrassen).

Their famous collection of folk and fairy tales has been translated into 160 languages and is on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register for the preservation of cultural documents. Art historian Georg Dehio (1850--1932), inspirator of the modern discipline of historic preservation, described the park as "possibly the most grandiose combination of landscape and architecture that the Baroque dared anywhere" The area of the park is 2.4 square kilometres (590 acres), making it the largest European hillside park, and second largest park on a mountain slope in the world. Construction of the Bergpark, or "mountain park", began in 1696 and took about 150 years.
With its water gardens and its statue of Hercules, Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe (hillside park Wilhelmshöhe) in the west of the Hessian city of Kassel is an outstanding masterpiece of the self-dramatization of absolutist rulers. A special sightseeing tip for Germany travelers. Its exceptional topographical setting on the slope of a hill in Habichtswald forest made it possible for generations of rulers and master builders to stage the seemingly impossible: water flowing down the hill in several different artistic forms without previously having been channeled up the slope using technical devices such as aqueducts or water raising machinery.
The octagonal building at the top of the mountain is crowned with an 8.3 meter copy of the Hercules Farnese. The constructional solution reached in its creation represents the very best in technical and artistic terms for this kind of monumental figure. The fact that it was to be positioned on top of a 40-meter pyramid meant the sculpture needed to be as light as possible.

Kassel is a city located on the Fulda River in northern Hesse, Germany. Kassel is the administrative seat of the Regierungsbezirk Kassel and the Kreis of the same name. The former capital of the state of Hesse-Kassel has many palaces and parks, including the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kassel is also known for the documenta exhibitions of contemporary art.
Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe includes Wilhelmshöhe Palace (with the Antiquities Collection and Old Masters), the Hercules monument, and the Lions Castle. Wilhelmshöhe Palace above the city, was built in 1786 by landgrave Wilhelm IX of Hesse-Kassel. The palace is now a museum and houses an important collection of Graeco-Roman antiques and a fine gallery of paintings comprising the second largest collection of Rembrandts in Germany. It is surrounded by the beautiful Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe with many appealing sights. The complex was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013.
Another large park and also part of the European Garden Heritage Network is the Karlsaue along the Fulda River. Established in the 16th century, it is famous for the Orangerie, a palace built in 1710 as a summer residence for the landgraves. Today, the Orangerie contains the Museum of Astronomy and Technology, with a scale model of the Solar System spanning the entire park and beyond. In addition, the Park Schönfeld contains a small, municipal botanical garden, the Botanischer Garten Kassel.
Kassel has seven tram lines (1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8), with trams arriving usually every 15 minutes. The city also operates a light rail Stadtbahn network called RegioTram using Regio Citadis low-floor trams which run on both tram and main line railway tracks with four lines (RT3, RT4, RT5, RT9). Moreover, a number of low-floor buses complete the Kassel public transport system. The introduction of low-floor buses led to the development of the Kassel kerb which improves the accessibility at bus stops. The city is connected to the national rail network at two stations, Kassel Central, and Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe. The traditional central station (Hauptbahnhof) has been reduced to the status of a regional station since the opening of the Hanover-Würzburg high-speed rail line in 1991 and its station (Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe) on the high-speed line at which the InterCityExpress (ICE) and InterCity services call. Kassel is connected to the motorways A 7, A 49 and A 44. The city is served by Kassel Calden Airport.

Places to see in ( Kassel - Germany )
Kassel is a city located on the Fulda River in northern Hesse, Germany. Kassel is the administrative seat of the Regierungsbezirk Kassel and the Kreis of the same name. The former capital of the state of Hesse-Kassel has many palaces and parks, including the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kassel is also known for the documenta exhibitions of contemporary art.
Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe includes Wilhelmshöhe Palace (with the Antiquities Collection and Old Masters), the Hercules monument, and the Lions Castle. Wilhelmshöhe Palace above the city, was built in 1786 by landgrave Wilhelm IX of Hesse-Kassel. The palace is now a museum and houses an important collection of Graeco-Roman antiques and a fine gallery of paintings comprising the second largest collection of Rembrandts in Germany. It is surrounded by the beautiful Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe with many appealing sights. The complex was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013.
Another large park and also part of the European Garden Heritage Network is the Karlsaue along the Fulda River. Established in the 16th century, it is famous for the Orangerie, a palace built in 1710 as a summer residence for the landgraves. Today, the Orangerie contains the Museum of Astronomy and Technology, with a scale model of the Solar System spanning the entire park and beyond. In addition, the Park Schönfeld contains a small, municipal botanical garden, the Botanischer Garten Kassel.
Kassel has seven tram lines (1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8), with trams arriving usually every 15 minutes. The city also operates a light rail Stadtbahn network called RegioTram using Regio Citadis low-floor trams which run on both tram and main line railway tracks with four lines (RT3, RT4, RT5, RT9). Moreover, a number of low-floor buses complete the Kassel public transport system. The introduction of low-floor buses led to the development of the Kassel kerb which improves the accessibility at bus stops. The city is connected to the national rail network at two stations, Kassel Central, and Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe. The traditional central station (Hauptbahnhof) has been reduced to the status of a regional station since the opening of the Hanover-Würzburg high-speed rail line in 1991 and its station (Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe) on the high-speed line at which the InterCityExpress (ICE) and InterCity services call. Kassel is connected to the motorways A 7, A 49 and A 44. The city is served by Kassel Calden Airport.
