It is nicknamed the "Shiite Vatican City." Throughout the year, the city of Najaf in southern Iraq attracts millions of pilgrims who come to pay their respects at the tomb of Imam Ali, cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Mohammed. The Iraqi holy city is also famous for being the starting point of the insurgency against the US-led invasion in 2004. Our reporter returned to Najaf, whose militias are now at war against the Islamic State group.
Some 1,300 years ago, it was just an embankment in Iraq. An unmarked grave discovered by chance by a caliph during a hunting party in an oasis... The grave of the first imam of the Shiites, Imam Ali, was found. Today, one of the largest cities in Iraq is built around his tomb: Najaf, population one million. Each year, millions of pilgrims from around the world flock to the old town, around the Imam Ali shrine, a gold-plated mosque.
Yet for a long time, Najaf was forgotten, abandoned. Iraq's former dictator, Saddam Hussein, banned pilgrimages there, on top of murdering thousands of Shiites, including more than 9,000 religious leaders. When his regime fell, Najaf took up arms. This is where the insurgency against the US forces began.
In 2004, tens of thousands of Shiite fighters led by the young cleric Moqtada al-Sadr set up their stronghold in the Imam Ali shrine. The Americans surrounded the city and the battle of Najaf made history.
An expanding city
After weeks of bombings, a truce was negotiated. The rebels, exhausted by the fighting, escaped the blockade and formed the Mahdi Army, a Shiite armed group which became the US army’s worst nightmare.
Twelve years later, what strikes a visitor arriving in Najaf are the cranes and building sites that dot the expanding city. The crowds of visitors are remarkable. Millions of Shiite pilgrims come from around the world to pray at the tomb of their first imam. For those accustomed to the rest of Iraq, the virtual absence of checkpoints manned by security forces is also a welcome surprise. Here, the war seems far away.
But it is at the city cemetery that reality catches up. With five million Shiites buried on the land, it is the largest Muslim cemetery in the world. And the fresh graves of fighters line up as far as the eye can see. They were killed by their new enemy, the Islamic State group. In 2014, an imam from Najaf, Ali Sistani, issued a fatwa calling on Shiites to form militias and fight the Sunni jihadists. Tens of thousands of Najaf men answered his call.
This is the story of a city with two faces, holy and rebel. Twelve years after one of the bloodiest episodes in its history, it is gradually rising from the ashes.

Najaf
Najaf (Arabic: النجف; BGN: An Najaf) is a city in Iraq about 160 km (roughly 100 miles) south of Baghdad. Its estimated population in 2013 was 1.000.000 people. It is the capital of Najaf Governorate. It is widely considered the third holiest city of Shi'a Islam, the Shia world’s spiritual capital and the center of Shi'a political power in Iraq. The city is home to the Imam Ali Shrine, and hosts millions of pilgrims yearly.
Religious significance
Najaf is considered sacred by both Shi'a and Sunni Muslims. Najaf is renowned as the site of the tomb of Alī ibn Abī Tālib also known as "Imām Alī", the First Imam of the Shiites, the cousin and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, whom the Shi'a consider to be the righteous caliph. Sunnis consider Ali the fourth Rashidun (rightly guided Caliphs). The city is now a center of pilgrimage from throughout the Shi'a Islamic world. It is estimated that only Mecca and Medina receive more Muslim pilgrims. As the burial site of Shi'a Islam's second most important figure, the Imam Ali Mosque is considered by Shiites as the third holiest Islamic site.

Wynton Marsalis
Wynton Learson Marsalis (born October 18, 1961) is a trumpeter, composer, teacher, music educator, and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, United States. Marsalis has promoted the appreciation of classical and jazz music often to young audiences. Marsalis has been awarded nine Grammys in both genres, and his Blood on the Fields was the first jazz composition to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Marsalis is the son of jazz musician Ellis Marsalis, Jr. (pianist), grandson of Ellis Marsalis, Sr., and brother of Branford (saxophonist), Delfeayo (trombonist), and Jason (drummer). He performed the national anthem of Super Bowl XX in 1986.
Life and career
Marsalis was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 18, 1961, the second of six sons of Delores (née Ferdinand) and Ellis Louis Marsalis, Jr., a pianist and music professor. Marsalis and wife Delores Ferdinand have six sons: Branford Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis III (1964), Delfeayo Marsalis, Mboya Kinyatta Marsalis (1971), and Jason Marsalis. Branford, Wynton, Delfeayo, and Jason are also jazz musicians. Ellis is a poet, photographer, and network engineer based in Baltimore. At an early age, he exhibited an aptitude for music.

From conception to completion, VOTE 2013 is a handcrafted stopmotion created as a public service anouncemnt for the second largest televison channel in Pakistan, SAMAA TV. Every aspect of this stopmotion was meticulously created, from the wooden props, stage and paint to lighting rigs and foley sounds all the way to the 8 foot camera track/move, each element was hand-built by us with the help of Pakistan’s genius carpenters. It was all shot in stop-motion to show how frame by frame, brick by brick we can resurrect the fortunes of Pakistan. I hope it inspires every Pakistani to go out and make an informed and educated vote! From conception to completion, VOTE 2013 is a handcrafted stopmotion created as a public service anouncemnt for the second largest televison channel in Pakistan, SAMAA TV. Every aspect of this stopmotion was meticulously created, from the wooden props, stage and paint to lighting rigs and foley sounds all the way to the 8 foot camera track/move, each element was hand-built by us with the help of Pakistan’s genius carpenters. It was all shot in stop-motion to show how frame by frame, brick by brick we can resurrect the fortunes of Pakistan. Some 1,300 years ago, it was just an embankment in Iraq. An unmarked grave discovered by chance by a caliph during a hunting party in an oasis... The grave of the first imam of the Shiites, Imam Ali, was found. Today, one of the largest cities in Iraq is built around his tomb: Najaf, population one million. Each year, millions of pilgrims from around the world flock to the old town, around the Imam Ali shrine, a gold-plated mosque.
Yet for a long time, Najaf was forgotten, abandoned. Iraq's former dictator, Saddam Hussein, banned pilgrimages there, on top of murdering thousands of Shiites, including more than 9,000 religious leaders. When his regime fell, Najaf took up arms. This is where the insurgency against the US forces began.
In 2004, tens of thousands of Shiite fighters led by the young cleric Moqtada al-Sadr set up their stronghold in the Imam Ali shrine. The Americans surrounded the city and the battle of Najaf made history.
An expanding city
After weeks of bombings, a truce was negotiated. The rebels, exhausted by the fighting, escaped the blockade and formed the Mahdi Army, a Shiite armed group which became the US army’s worst nightmare.
Twelve years later, what strikes a visitor arriving in Najaf are the cranes and building sites that dot the expanding city. The crowds of visitors are remarkable. Millions of Shiite pilgrims come from around the world to pray at the tomb of their first imam. For those accustomed to the rest of Iraq, the virtual absence of checkpoints manned by security forces is also a welcome surprise. Here, the war seems far away.
But it is at the city cemetery that reality catches up. With five million Shiites buried on the land, it is the largest Muslim cemetery in the world. And the fresh graves of fighters line up as far as the eye can see. They were killed by their new enemy, the Islamic State group. In 2014, an imam from Najaf, Ali Sistani, issued a fatwa calling on Shiites to form militias and fight the Sunni jihadists. Tens of thousands of Najaf men answered his call.
This is the story of a city with two faces, holy and rebel. Twelve years after one of the bloodiest episodes in its history, it is gradually rising from the ashes.

From conception to completion, VOTE 2013 is a handcrafted stopmotion created as a public service anouncemnt for the second largest televison channel in Pakistan, SAMAA TV. Every aspect of this stopmotion was meticulously created, from the wooden props, stage and paint to lighting rigs and foley sounds all the way to the 8 foot camera track/move, each element was hand-built by us with the help of Pakistan’s genius carpenters. It was all shot in stop-motion to show how frame by frame, brick by brick we can resurrect the fortunes of Pakistan.
I hope it inspires every Pakistani to go out and make an informed and educated vote!

Effective Evangelism Training
Power of the Holy Spirit emphasizes learning God’s vision for evangelism, and developing a passion for personal evangelism. This evangelism conference also seeks to develop practical evangelism skills in cooperating with the Holy Spirit.
The course uses a lot of the principles we teach about cooperating with the Holy Spirit and conversational evangelism, based on Phillip and Ethiopian Eunuch.

Acts Conversions
Let’s look at an “easy conversion,” that of the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts Chapter 8.
This conversion was as simple as picking a ripe mango ready to fall from a tree.
It’s not so much about the Eunuch as it is about Phillip being God’s tool to help the man come to faith.
The fruit is ready
The Fruit is Ready
These are the kinds of evangelistic conversations I love because a person has been prepared by the Lord to this point, and I get to be the one God uses to bring that person into the kingdom.
It reminds me that God is the Evangelist, that the Holy Spirit goes before us to prepare the way, and that when we are obedient to His promptings, the Lord can use us.
The passage: Acts 8:26-40.
Phillip had been directed by the Lord to go on a scavenger hunt. “Go to the south road, the desert road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.”
Phillip was then prompted to go and stand near a chariot that was on the road.
Phillip hears a man reading a particular passage from the book of Isaiah.
Phillip asks if he understands.
The man’s response: “How can I unless someone explains it to me? Please tell me who the prophet is talking about.”
Phillip began there and told him the good news about Jesus. The eunuch believed, he took baptism, and went on his way rejoicing, never to see Phillip again.
Reflections:
A seeker:
We know from the text what Phillip didn’t know at first. This man had been coming from Jerusalem, where he had been to worship God. Phillip didn’t know him, but found a man reading out loud from the Old Testament.
This man shows all the signs of one who is spiritualy thirsty.
• He had reworked his schedule to go to Jerusalem on his own.
• He was reading from the Scripture.
• He wanted somebody to explain what he was reading.
• He was willing to search for the truth.
• He was willing to understand.
This man was hungry for the things of God. He was spiritually thirsty. Prepared by God.
All he needed was a person to help explain.
An evangelist.
The Lord used an obedient Phillip to help this man into the kingdom.
Both sides always balance
God worked both sides of the equation, so to speak, putting Phillip and the spiritualy thirsty eunuch in the same place at the same time. This positioning is the Role of the Holy Spirit in Evangelism.
All Phillip had to do in this encounter with a stranger was to obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
In other words, Phillip got to work with God.
Phillip didn’t
• need to pry open a hard heart like a can of beans.
• have to waste hours of conversation about the existence of God.
• need to get the Eunuch to the starting point of a Gospel Script
All the talk in the world could not replace the work of God that prepared the eunuch ahead of time.
Luke on summarizes the conversation as “the good news about Jesus”. This was not a Scripted Evangelism Conversation.
So what?
For one brief afternoon, the stories of these two strangers intersected. Phillip was doing his ordinary routine when the Lord prompted him to go to specific place. The eunuch was simply going home after a pilgrimage.
But at one moment, their paths crossed and one man’s destiny was changed.
It is my desire that you spend time asking “God where are you at work?” It’s much easier to cooperate with God’s activity, rather than wasting hours of argument prying open a locked heart.
The key is that Phillip noticed “THAT” Chariot. God underlined the chariot and Phillip positioned himself.
We know that God’s Spirit is at work in us as believers, training us, teaching us, and transforming us.
But, I also want to point out how the Holy Spirit prepares the way for evangelism to occur naturally.
Consider Phillip and the Ethiopian Eunuch. Clearly the Spirit of God was at work in the life of the Eunuch.
• He had gone to Jerusalem to worship.
• He was reading Scripture.
• He wanted someone to explain Scripture to him.
The eunuch had a spiritual thirst, created by the Holy Spirit, and he was busy searching to slake that thirst. He was like the merchant looking for the fine pearl.
