Malawi (/məˈlɔːwi/, /məˈlɑːwi/ or /ˈmæləwi/; Chichewa: [maláβi] or [maláwi]), officially the Republic of Malawi, is a landlocked country in southeast Africa that was formerly known as Nyasaland. It is bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast, and Mozambique on the east, south and west. The country is separated from Tanzania and Mozambique by Lake Malawi. Malawi is over 118,000 km2 (45,560 sq mi) with an estimated population of 16,777,547 (July 2013 est.). Its capital is Lilongwe, which is also Malawi's largest city; the second largest is Blantyre and the third is Mzuzu. The name Malawi comes from the Maravi, an old name of the Nyanja people that inhabit the area. The country is also nicknamed "The Warm Heart of Africa".
Malawi is among the smallest countries in Africa. Lake Malawi takes about a third of Malawi's area.

Black and German: news anchor Jana Pareigis has spent her entire life being asked about her skin color. What is it like to be black in Germany? What needs to change? “Where are you from?” Afro-German journalist Jana Pareigis has heard that question since her early childhood. And she’s not alone. Black people have been living in Germany for around 400 years, and today there are an estimated one million Germans with dark skin. But they still get asked the latently racist question, "Where are you from?” Jana Pareigis is familiar with the undercurrents of racism in the western world. When she was a child, the Afro-German TV presenter also thought her skin color was a disadvantage. "When I was young, I wanted to be white,” she says. Parageis takes us on a trip through Germany from its colon...
In this week's Times TV's Hot Current, Information Minister Nicholas Dausi faces hosts George Kasakula and Brian Banda on why Presidents in Malawi suddenly accumulate enormous wealth when in power. What is the source and is this clean money? They also break down issues of corruption and nepotism in the DPP-led government.
Five years ago, Malawi was one of the 10 poorest countries in the world. And when President Bingu wa Mutharika stepped into office, the countrys economy was literally in tatters. It faced one of the worst food security situations in the world, there was no money in governments coffers, and countrys infrastructure was in a state. The first step on the Presidents to-do list was to rekindle relationships with the donor community.
Tanzania's Finance minister expects economic growth to reach 7.2 percent in 2016 up from 7 percent last year. Budget spending for the fiscal year starting in July will also rise 2.2 percent. Philip Mpango presented the document outlining budget plans for 2016/17 to parliament. And this will be the first indication of spending plans under the new administration of President John Magufuli, who was elected in October 2015. And in Malawi, the finance ministry says growth will pick to more than 4 percent in 2016 from about 3 percent last year as the country recovers from a drought caused by the El Nino weather pattern. Agriculture accounts for almost a third of Malawi's economy and provides a livelihood for 80 percent of the population. The kwacha has also been hit by a loss of donor funds be...

(www.abndigital.com) Following a lull in violent protest that ripped through the country a few weeks ago, we take a look at a new report on the Malawian economy. Malawi's economy is built on the backbone of the smallholder farmer. Many farmers, however face obstacles in growing their businesses. They lack access to bank accounts, and cash is risky. Feed the Future Malawi Mobile Project uses digital financial services to improve the Malawi agriculture value chain and farmers' economic resilience. USAID can help missions and partners identify specific challenges in value chains and corresponding DFS solutions to increase digital financial inclusion for smallholder farmers. Digital financial services help USAID projects run more efficiently and allow farmers to connect to the financial ecosystem, giving them tools to support their economic livelihoods long after the projects have ended. This video was produced by DDC International.
(www.abndigital.com) Britain is to buy up to 20 million pounds of Malawian currency to help stabilise the African state's economy following a major devaluation. ABN's Samantha Loring speaks with Jan Duvenage, Africa Research Analyst from Standard Bank Research, looking at the economic future of Malawi.
Malawi officially became a democracy in 1994, but it was only 10 years on when the country really started firmly on its path of recovery. And part of that process was developing a sustainable financial sector.

Malawian scouts spend a lot of time with cooking and dancing. Quite understandable when all cooking is done over open fire and there are a lot of hungry scouts and some foreign guests to feed. Sometimes the food is delivered still alive a real challenge for us, who are not used to do the killing of the supper...Dancing instead, was so much fun! Everybody, old and young, European or African speak the same language when it comes to music...only that our Malawian friends seem to have an extra momentum to their hips.

The ingredients for a stronger health system are there. But how do we cook them? Dr. Jansen is an American family physician who moved his family to Malawi in 2000. Moved by the enormity of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, he and a group of Malawians founded the Malawian non-profit Partners in Hope. Their medical centre cares for over 7,000 HIV patients and leads a major PEPFAR-funded HIV/training program in over 90 facilities in six districts. PIH is committed to expanding to become a full service, non-profit teaching and research hospital. One of the major challenges in providing quality care for patients in low-resource settings like sub-Saharan Africa is the severe shortage of health workers. This situation is further compounded in rural areas, where health workers find themselves overwhelmed with long patient queues, inadequate training and no support. To help address this issue, Dignitas International, along with our partners in Malawi and at the University of Cape Town Lung Institute's Knowledge Translation Unit, worked to develop a toolkit and training model known as PALM+ (Practical Approach to Lung Health + HIV/AIDS in Malawi).

UCL is hosting an exhibition of photographs chronicling the university's involvement in a project to improve mother and and child health in rural Africa. The UCL Centre for International Health and Development established the MaiMwana Project in Malawi in 2002. Maternal mortality in the country is among the highest in the world and neonatal mortality is also high and accounts for almost half of all infant deaths. High mortality rates are partly a result of poor health care for mothers and their children thanks to a lack of drugs and supplies, high turnover of health service providers, variable service quality and lack of ownership by local communities. The MaiMwana Project aims to reduce mother and child mortality and morbidity by mobilising women's groups in local communities...

The team finished off Malawi's 2016 country tour with Likoma Island. We traveled on the MV Ilala from Monkey-port. It was one lovely and adventurous tour we have ever had. MV Ilala is a motor ship that has sailed on Lake Malawi since 1951. She is operated by Malawi Shipping Company (MSC) and based in Monkey Bay, Malawi (on the southern end of the lake). Every week she crosses the lake all the way north to Chilumba, Malawi, near Tanzania (about 300 miles (480 km) from Monkey Bay) and then returns to Monkey Bay. She carries both passengers and freight, and calls at major towns on both the Malawian and Mozambican coast, as well as at the two inhabited islands of the lake (Likoma and Chizumulu). Though old, she remains the most important means of long-distance transport for the people livin...

Lilongwe is Malawi’s Capital City, named after the great Lilongwe River that flows into Lake Malawi. It is an exceptionally green city with trees and patches of grassland covering a great deal of the city. For centuries Lilongwe was a small fishing village on the banks of the River Lilongwe. It is at the centre of the country near the borders of Mozambique and Zambia and was used as an administrative centre by Colonial Britain. The city is divided into New and Old. The Old Town to the South is based around the centuries old fishing village while New Town or Capital City grew up after President Banda moved the capital here from Zomba. This documentary tells the extraordinary story of a boy who overcame great obstacles to fulfill a dream. William Kamkwamba grew up on a farm in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world. At the age of 14, he built a windmill from scrap to generate electricity. In doing so, he changed the lives of the people in his village forever - and his own. New York City's got a colder winter
Than where I live this time of year.
I wouldn't know cuz I missed my flight
And went out instead.
Handful of friends with some dynamite
Set to explode if you do it right.
Right off a cliff on a Saturday night.
Should have stayed at home.
I never would have met her there.
OH! OH NO!
She's my biggest mistake.
I never knew about her.
OH! OH NO!
She's my biggest mistake.
I should have listened to the first time
Mitch Ryder warned me
About the psycho with the blue dress on.
I tried to run but she's so so good at keeping up.
I had it coming or so they said.
Right off the pages of a gossip thread.
If only I had just stayed in bed.
Gonna sue Jet Blue for everything they put me through.
OH! OH NO!
She's my biggest mistake.
I never knew about her.
OH! OH NO!
She's my biggest mistake.
OH! OH NO!
She's my biggest mistake.
(Biggest mistake, biggest mistake)
I never knew about her.
OH! OH NO!
She's my biggest mistake.
Wake me up from the nightmare I'm in.
She's a certified psycho and she's pulling me in.
Wake me up from the nightmare I'm in.
She's a certified psycho.
Can anybody help me out?
OH! OH NO!
She's my biggest mistake.
I never knew about her.
OH! OH NO!
She's my biggest mistake.
[x2]
OH! OH NO!
She's my biggest mistake.
