Mark Ayres (Born 1961) is a television composer who is best known for providing incidental music on the original series of Doctor Who.
Ayres's work on broadcast Doctor Who was during Sylvester McCoy's era as the Seventh Doctor, comprising The Greatest Show in the Galaxy, Ghost Light, and The Curse of Fenric. Ayres was hired after he sent producer John Nathan-Turner a demonstration video containing music he had written to accompany Remembrance of the Daleks. Like most Doctor Who incidental music composers during the 1980s, Ayres created the music electronically, principally using digital synthesisers and samplers.
Ayres was also involved in the last days of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, cataloguing and archiving their recordings for future use. As part of the BBC's unofficial Doctor Who Restoration Team, Ayres has also done much of the audio restoration work for the later VHS Doctor Who releases, as well as many of the DVD releases, and all of the "Missing Soundtrack" CD releases since 1999. Additionally, he edited the "Special Edition" of The Curse of Fenric, which restored much footage which was originally cut for time, along with some new special effects and a complete remix of the soundtrack. It is available along with the original on the BBC DVD release.
Miami Vice is an American television crime drama series created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann for NBC. The series starred Don Johnson as James "Sonny" Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, two Metro-Dade Police Department detectives working undercover in Miami. The series ran for five seasons on NBC from 1984 to 1989. The USA Network later began airing reruns the next year, in 1990, and broadcast an originally unaired episode during its syndication run of the series on January 25, 1990.
Unlike standard police procedurals, the show drew heavily upon 1980s New Wave culture and music. The show became noted for its integration of music and visual effects. It is recognized as one of the most influential television series of all time.People magazine stated that Miami Vice was the "first show to look really new and different since color TV was invented".
Michael Mann directed a film adaptation of the series, which was released on July 28, 2006.
The BBC Radiophonic Workshop, one of the sound effects units of the BBC, was created in 1958 to produce effects and new music for radio. It was closed in March 1998, although much of its traditional work had already been outsourced by 1995. The original Radiophonic Workshop was based in the BBC's Maida Vale Studios in Delaware Road, London.
The Workshop was set up to satisfy the growing demand in the late 1950s for "radiophonic" sounds from a group of producers and studio managers at the BBC, including Desmond Briscoe and Daphne Oram. For some time there had been much interest in producing innovative music and sounds to go with the pioneering programming of the era, in particular the dramatic output of the BBC Third Programme. Often the sounds required for the atmosphere that programme makers wished to create were unavailable or non-existent through traditional sources and so some, such as the musically trained Oram, would look to new techniques to produce effects and music for their pieces. Much of this interest drew them to musique concrète and tape manipulation techniques, since using these methods could allow them to create soundscapes suitable for the growing range of unconventional programming. When the BBC noticed the rising popularity of this method they established a Radiophonic Effects Committee, setting up the Workshop in rooms 13 & 14 of the BBC's Maida Vale studios with a budget of £2,000. The Workshop regularly released technical journals of their findings - leading to some of their techniques being borrowed by sixties producers and engineers such as Eddie Kramer.
Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme produced by the BBC from 1963 to the present day. The programme depicts the adventures of the Doctor, a Time Lord—a space and time-travelling humanoid alien. He explores the universe in his TARDIS, a sentient time-travelling space ship. Its exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. Accompanied by companions, the Doctor combats a variety of foes, while working to save civilisations and help people in need.
The show is a significant part of British popular culture, and elsewhere it has become a cult television favourite. The show has influenced generations of British television professionals, many of whom grew up watching the series. The programme originally ran from 1963 to 1989. There was an unsuccessful attempt to revive regular production in 1996 with a backdoor pilot, in the form of a television film. The programme was relaunched in 2005 by Russell T Davies, who was showrunner and head writer for the first five years of its revival, produced in-house by BBC Wales in Cardiff. The first series of the 21st century featured Christopher Eccleston in the title role and was produced by the BBC. Series two and three had some development money contributed by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), which was credited as a co-producer.Doctor Who also spawned spin-offs in multiple media, including Torchwood (2006–2011) and The Sarah Jane Adventures (2007–2011), both created by Russell T Davies; K-9 (2009–2010); and a single pilot episode of K-9 and Company (1981). There also have been many spoofs and cultural references to the character in other media.

Pioneers of electronica, the Radiophonic Workshop was originally created as a sound effects unit for BBC Radio and TV programmes and was responsible for the iconic sounds and theme tune of Doctor Who and many more. Roger Limb and Mark Ayres joined us for an exclusive masterclass. Mark and Roger discussed the origins of the Radiophonic Workshop and some of the ground-breaking equipment that they used. They played some incredible sound effects and then demonstrated how household objects (like a ruler or a knife on a chopping board) had been used to create them. Terrifyingly, they even showed how to create the sound of a Dalek! After coming to prominence as a performer in the hippie musical Hair, former teenage folk-singer Sonja Kristina became front woman of British progressive rockers Curved Air. Their classical-influenced music, fronted by sexy Sonja and violinist Darryl Way, was a sensation and made them leaders in the post-Beatles rock boom. She tells the fascinating story of her late Sixties/early-Seventies stardom, which was followed by marriage to Police drummer Stewart Copeland, a spell in the wilderness and a return to her roots as a folk performer. Added to this are tales of Swinging London, a tryst with Donovan and some fascinating insights behind the façade of the entertainment scene, all recounted with passion and humour.

"Detector channels for holographic data images" Holographic data storage (HDS) is accomplished by recording and reconstructing data-bearing holograms in a thick photosensitive medium. During a data retrieval operation, the diffracted holographic signal is detected by a two-dimensional pixel array. The resulting raw image is subject to blur, distortion, and noise, and must be digitally processed in order to extract the recorded data. In the first part of this presentation, the data channel for InPhase Technologies Inc.'s Tapestry® HDS drive is described, including techniques for alignment measurement and resampling. In the second part, current research is presented for a coherent det...

A tribute to Kubrick planned before his death that ended up acting almost as a memorial afterwards, this collection of score excerpts and classical pieces makes quite an impressive summary of the relationship between him and the music for his films. Composer Gerald Fried, who scored five Kubrick films, takes up the baton here, leading the COPP through suites from his five scores, Spartacus, Dr. Strangelove, and Lolita, as well as classical pieces associated with his films. Additional material comes from Mark Ayres, who does a terrific job with the electronic pieces and songs -- finding "Surfin' Bird" co-existing with Vera Lynn's "We'll Meet Again" seems both odd and perfect. More to the point, however, this disc is worth having just to have Fried's own suites (along with Laurie Johnson's "...

I came home from work
And she was waiting at the door
Had that bad day look in her eyes
And I heard the sound of her little feet
Across the hardwood floor
And I knelt down with my arms open wide
When I asked her what had happened
She pointed to our son and said
"Why don't you show your daddy what you've done"
And I could see the writing on the wall
Evidence of little hands
Picasso with a purple crayon
And I tried to act upset
But I was smiling through it all
'Cause I could see the writing on the wall, yeah
It was the first day of school
Standing by the laundry door
Wondering how third grade came so fast
I took a ruler and a sharpie pen
And I drew the line once more
So amazed at how the time had passed
With a backpack full of promise
And wonder in her eyes
I turned my head just so she wouldn't see me cry
'Cause I could see the writing on the wall
It seems no matter how I tried
The pages of this life keep turning
It's a roller coaster ride
And even though I knew we had it all
I could see the writing on the wall
I got a cinematic memory
Playing pictures of the past
Adding to the story as we go
'Cause every day I'm learning
That tomorrow comes too fast
So, I'm holding on to the only way I know
Yeah, yeah, whoa
I can see the writing on the wall
It seems no matter how I tried
The pages of this life keep turning
I can't stop the hands of time
Even though I knew we had it all
I can see the writing on the wall
