Dan Garcia has been redesigning computer science education, especially for secondary schools. Today, as coding is essential to all aspects of society, we must increase computing literacy.
Dan Garcia is a Senior Lecturer with Security Of Employment in the EECS Department at the University of California, Berkeley, and joined the faculty in the fall of 2000. Dan received his PhD and MS in Computer Science from UC Berkeley in 2000 and 1995, and dual BS degrees in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from MIT in 1990. He was chosen as an ACM Distinguished Educator in 2012.
He is active participant in SIGCSE (the annual computer science education conference, having presented every year since 2001), and is currently working with the ICSI Teaching Privacy research project. He serves on the ACM Education Board, the Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles Development Committee, is the faculty champion for the local Computer Science Teachers Association chapter, and the faculty co-director for BFOIT, a wonderful Berkeley K-12 outreach effort.

I'm Dan Garcia, and I'm a guitarist. I'm originally from Madrid, Spain. I've been in the US for about 20 years now, in New York City, since 1998. And I play guitar for a living. I have the privilege to wake up every day and be able to play and teach what I love the most, which is music and guitar playing. I've been playing music professionally for over 20 years. In New York, I do flamenco guitar. I also play classical guitar. Brazilian. A lot of different styles, but mostly flamenco guitar has always been my passion.
I played guitar when I was 10 years old in Madrid. Classical guitar. I switched to flamenco in my teens. I used to go to southern Madrid, to this gypsy's house. His wife was a singer. He was a guitarist. It was very magical. I would spend hours there with these guys, just playing and learning about flamenco.

Computer science
Computer science is the scientific and practical approach to computation and its applications. Dan Garcia has been redesigning computer science education, especially for secondary schools. Today, as coding is essential to all aspects of society, we must increase computing literacy.
Dan Garcia is a Senior Lecturer with Security Of Employment in the EECS Department at the University of California, Berkeley, and joined the faculty in the fall of 2000. Dan received his PhD and MS in Computer Science from UC Berkeley in 2000 and 1995, and dual BS degrees in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from MIT in 1990. He was chosen as an ACM Distinguished Educator in 2012.
He is active participant in SIGCSE (the annual computer science education conference, having presented every year since 2001), and is currently working with the ICSI Teaching Privacy research project. He serves on the ACM Education Board, the Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles Development Committee, is the faculty champion for the local Computer Science Teachers Association chapter, and the faculty co-director for BFOIT, a wonderful Berkeley K-12 outreach effort.

I played guitar when I was 10 years old in Madrid. Classical guitar. I switched to flamenco in my teens. I used to go to southern Madrid, to this gypsy's house. His wife was a singer. He was a guitarist. It was very magical. I would spend hours there with these guys, just playing and learning about flamenco.

This talk will review the status of all of these projects, the development of "Snap!" (Build Your Own Blocks), a graphical programming environment based on MIT's Scratch that is used in the curriculum, and how we're working with the UC Online Instruction Pilot Project to bring BJC to the world.
Biography:
Dr. Dan Garcia received dual B.S. degrees in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from MIT, 1990; and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from UC Berkeley in 1995 and 2000, respectively. He joined the CS faculty at UC Berkeley in the Fall of 2000, won the departmental Diane S. McEntyre Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2002, the departmental Information Technology Faculty Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 2004 and was chosen as a UC Berkeley "Unsung Hero" in 2005. He has taught (or co-taught as a GSI, where he won both departmental and campus outstanding GSI awards) courses in teaching techniques, computer graphics, virtual reality, computer animation, self-paced programming as well as the lower-division introductory CS curriculum. He is active in SIGCSE, is a member of the ACM Education Board, and is the faculty co-advisor for BFOIT, a wonderful Berkeley outreach effort. He is currently mentoring over seventy undergraduates, spread across four groups that he founded in 2001, centered around his research and development interests in computer graphics, Macintosh OS X programming, combinatorial game theory and computer science education.

McEntyre Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2002, the departmental Information Technology Faculty Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 2004 and was chosen as a UC Berkeley "Unsung Hero" in 2005. He has taught (or co-taught as a GSI, where he won both departmental and campus outstanding GSI awards) courses in teaching techniques, computer graphics, virtual reality, computer animation, self-paced programming as well as the lower-division introductory CS curriculum. He is active in SIGCSE, is a member of the ACM Education Board, and is the faculty co-advisor for BFOIT, a wonderful Berkeley outreach effort. He is currently mentoring over seventy undergraduates, spread across four groups that he founded in 2001, centered around his research and development interests in computer graphics, Macintosh OS X programming, combinatorial game theory and computer science education.
