The English Hawthorn or Crataegus monogyna is fast becoming a popular bonsai species around Europe, as it has some thing of interest on it all year round, from lovely white flowers to delicate leaves in spring to deeply lobed leaves and green berries in summer to red berries and colourful leaves in autumn to fine branching and craggy barking over winter. This Video, part of the Bonsai Trees For Beginners Series, show you how to care for the English Hawthorns as a Bonsai Tree. The English Hawthorn is quite a favorite tree amongst bonsai growers. They tend to ramify quite well although they get lots of branches so the tree looks old quite quickly. The leaves on them which can be between 3 to 8 centimetres or 3 – 12 centimetres. The leaves can be, are usually on little reddish-brown stems The leaves themselves are doubly serrated. That means they are quite deeply doubly serrated. Generally, they have white blossoms in Spring, though in some areas you can even find a slightly pink blossom. The bark is full of character. It's a flaky bark. It tends to be between gray, gray and brown and gives the age, it gives the tree, the bonsai, quite a bit of age. The best place to grow a Hawthorn is in full Sun outdoors. It needs a lot of light, it needs a lot of water. It’s from the Rosaceae family. Feed regularly during the growing season. The growing season generally starts from March up to about August, July, August. You repot the tree, Springtime is about the best of March to April or end of April is a good time to do it. Prune in May, June and then again in July, August, September, Autumn when the leaves start falling off. Structural pruning is generally kept towards when the trunk of the tree is dormant. Cuttings take quite easily with this species. If you're going to try and grow them from seed, you generally have to, they have to have a two-year chilling. Even in the wild, they take two years before they start propagating. Seeds are generally not so easy to propagate from unless you have professional help. Having said that, they're easy to collect from the wild and you’ll find lots of self seeded trees all around.
