Throwing is the launching of a ballistic projectile by hand. This action is only possible for animals with the ability to grasp objects with their hands (mainly primates).
Humans, being bipedal, have a wide variety of throwing techniques and abilities. These have been employed in warfare – first through rock-throwing, then refined weapon-throwing (e.g. spear, throwing axe), and into modern day with hand grenades and tear gas canisters. Throwing is used in many sports and games, particularly ball games, and in throwing sports the action is the main determiner of the outcome. These serve as forms of recreation and exercise in society.
Humans are believed to be unusually good throwers due to their high dexterity and good timing capabilities, and it is believed that this is an evolved trait. Evidence of hominid throwing dates back 2 million years to homo erectus. The 90 mph throwing speed found in many athletes far exceeds the speed at which chimpanzees can throw things, which is about 20 mph. This ability reflects the ability of the human shoulder muscles and tendons to store elasticity until it is needed to propel an object.
Knife throwing is an art, sport, combat skill, or variously an entertainment technique, involving an artist skilled in the art of throwing knives, the weapons thrown, and a target.
Knife throwing, whether in a martial or sport application, involves the same basic principles of mechanics. The objective in each case is for the point to stick into the target with a sufficient amount of force. For this to be successful, accuracy, distance, number of rotations and placement of the body all must be taken into account.
If the thrower uses a spin technique, the knife will rotate during flight. This means that the thrower, assuming they are throwing the same way every time, must either choose a specific distance for each type of throw or, more practically, make slight adjustments to the placement of the knife in the hand or to the throwing movement. Another adjustment that can be made is the way the knife is held. If it is held at the blade when it is thrown, this makes it spin half, whereas if it is held by the handle, this makes a full spin. So if the thrower estimates he needs one and a half spins for the point to hit the target, he would hold the knife from the blade when it is thrown. If he feels he needs two full spins for it to hit the target point-first, then it would be held by the handle.
I thought I'd have a go at making a round ball shaped vase after one of my subscribers sent me a photo of a Korean Pot that they had seen. This was a bit tricky and took me longer than my usual 5 minutes because you really need to collar the clay in the pot in from a wide position. Anyway for a first attempt I was quite pleased with the end result and the shape was quite nice. I'll be throwing a few more similar to this in the future. Apparently you can make them from porcelain and put a candle inside and they glow white, hence the name sometimes of a moon jar.
Throwing a slightly larger bowl than usual on the wheel. The same techniques as for smaller bowls, just throw a slightly flared out cylinder with the clay and then stretch out from the inside to form the required bowl shape

So I had the idea of building a miniature indoor throwing axe, dont ask me why, it's just how my mind works. Obviously we want to spend next to nothing, but build something that isn't crappy either, and I think this build achieves that. Made from either 1 or 2 nails and an optional piece of wood, these mini axes cost between a $1 or $2 to make, and can be build from start to finish in about 2 hours all in. This short video covers the basics of throwing a plate on the potter's wheel- and an easy way to "cheat" to get the edge perfectly centered if you have an issue with that. One important thing I didn't emphasize in the video is the need to really compress the bottom several times. Lack of compression always results in "s" cracking in the bottom. This video is for my students in Ceramics I, II, and III (Wheel Throwing) at William Mason High School, in Mason, Ohio as well as anyone in the general public that just wants to learn a bit more about working with clay! If you want more specific information on other methods of throwing, or even just the beginning stages of centering, dropping, or opening, check out some of my other videos! Knife throwing is a fun! Throwing knives is like playing darts, only much more manly ;-) Seriously, learning how to throw a knife can be a challenge but once you get the hang of it it is pretty cool. By the light of the moon
To a 50's tune
He pledged his love to her
A girl so rare
A girl so fair
The girl for him for sure
He could see himself getting up every mornin'
For the rest of his life
Just to look in those eyes so blue
It was all he ever wanted to do
She was all he'd ever need to see him through
They were still in their teens
When he gave her the ring
They were married late one May
And they moved into a little house
On the far end of town
Out by the big highway
And all through the days
And all through the nights
The cars and trucks rolled on by
And he slept through it all just fine
Every night he slept just fine
Sometimes she'd stare at the stars out the window
Sometimes she'd walk `neath the moon
Sometimes she'd sit there just watching him sleeping
Hoping the dawn would come soon
She'd done well in school
She'd followed the rules
And she'd always stood out from the rest
She'd go off to college
And work her way through
Then move to some city out west
She had it all planned
She'd have her career
She'd have all of the things that she'd always lacked
She'd wake up one morning all packed
And leave here and never look back
Most of her friends thought it soon would be over
Not many thought it would last
Most seemed to think they were all wrong for each other
And soon it would pass - soon it would pass
Now twenty years have gone
And her kids have moved on
And she's still on the far end of town
Her youngest - she's livin' somewhere in L.A.
And her oldest - he works on a nearby farm
Her husband comes home
And they talk over supper
He's usually the first to turn in
Another day comes to an end
Another day just ends
And sometimes in the wee hours when the traffic dies down
She'll hear the sound of some bird on the wing
And she'll look out the window and she'll look at his picture
But not at the ring - not at the ring
